Great list of names Steph. My eyes keep landing on Gettin' Lit, so I'd go with that one.
Jackie, I sent you a friend request.

I'm excited to started and fall back into bingo 😏 I've found/chosen some books (well, at least one) for each shelf, which I never do before the game. I can be kind of a mood reader at times, esp during bingo, so I may end up changing all my choices come shelf announcement. But, I know for sure I'll be sticking with my FS choice.
For my FS, I'll be reading

Would either of you be able to be our captain, ya think?

Biergarten of the Damned by Seana Kelly
Series: Sam Quinn #5
Shelf #1: Vampires (GR genre "vampires" and shelved @ SOS as "vampires")
Read: 10 Oct
Rating: ✮✮✮✮½
My Review:

Um, have my very own Shire? Yes, please! This setup sounds wicked cool.
“You’re not actually paying attention to me, are you?” Clive sounded so put out, I had a hard time not laughing.
Gesturing to my ear, I said, “Sorry. Men talk at a vocal range that’s hard for women to hear.”
What with Sam's growth, her supportive and loving relationship with Clive, a dragon-made Shire, The Slaughtered Lamb's awesomeness, the addition of the wolfhound Fergus and an Orc guard Fangorn, meeting BFD and learning of Dave's backstory, and so much more this was nearly a ✮✮✮✮✮-read for me. But, I struggled with the quick-ish-ness of Sam's forgiveness. So, I'm deducting ½✮. On one hand, I loved that she was able to see through her sadness and anger to the heart of the situation as it was for her friend, but on the other hand, I felt there should've been a period of will she/won't she be able to forgive him.
I'm so anxious for the next book in 2023 and I'm looking forward to the announced spin-off, The Sea Wicche Chronicles Bewicched: The Sea Wicche Chronicles.
I highly recommend this series to UF+R fans!

Shelf #1 ~ 8 Oct: Vampire(s)

Review: This series is not one of my favorites but I like to visit now and then just to see what Anita Blake, Vampire hunter, is up to now. Since she chose vampire Jean-Claude over werewolf Richard, you would think maybe things would settle down some. But alas, it's not to be (tongue in cheek.) Richard has gotten himself arrested for rape in Tennessee, and knowing Richard for the good man that he is, Anita knows from the start that these are false charges. So she and a delegation of vampires and shifters travel to Tennessee and into another vampire's territory after being warned that they will be killed if they do. There follows a lot of political wrangling and violence, some including Richard's mother and brother. Anita has her hands full just trying to keep everybody alive and to figure out what's behind it all. All in all, a relatively good story with a lot of action and a whole lot of sex.

Shelf #1 ~ 8 Oct: Vampire(s)
Book:

Author: Dianne Duvall
Date read: 10/13/22

Rating: 4 stars
Review: This is a brand new series for me, which is exciting. The mixture of vampires, Immortal Guardians, aliens, and government shenanigans, was not something I'd ever see in one book. But the author made it work, and very well. The characters were great, I especially liked the heroine. She was plucky, even having to deal with the grief of losing her family, she kept moving forward and trying to make a life for herself. When she and the hero get caught up with the government and all of the conspiracy/secrecy part of the plot, things really pick up and I found myself reading all the way through to the end. I definitely want to continue with this series to see what happens next!

The Akseli by Dianne Duvall
Series: Aldebarian Alliance #4
Shelf: Free Space (on SOS Bookshelf)
Read: 13 Oct 2022
Rating: ✮✮✮✮½
My Review:
As with the first three books in Duvall's Aldebarian Alliance series, The Akseli focuses on what happens to one character following a Gathendien attack on the Kandovar. This book's focus is on Simone, an Immortal Guardian, and her time with space pirate, Janwar and those on his ship, the Tangata.
I'm an unabashed fan of all things written by Dianne Duvall. Her Immortal Guardians is one of my all-time favorites and I've enjoyed all the space exploration and expansion of the series with her Aldebarian Alliance series. While I wasn't as drawn to the romance of these two as much as those in the previous three installments, I still really enjoyed their interactions and shared battle scenes. And, I loved learning more about Janwar and a bit more about those on his ship.
I think I fell the hardest for Janwar's ship, the Tangata, which was spectacular with its wide open spaces, an amazing park and its merry band of rouge warriors. I hope we get to learn more about them all.
I like how Duvall brings us back to the moment of the attack, then branches off from there to explore what happened to those lost following it. I love meeting new species and learning about the scope of the world she's created. I'm anxious for whatever's next, which I'm guessing will focus either on Allison and M'kor or Liz and Kova. My vote is for Liz and Kova, who shared some touching scenes with Simone in this installment.

Witch Please by Ann Aguirre
Series: Fix-it Witches #1
Shelf #2: Witch(es) (shelved by 135 people)
Read: 17 Oct
Rating: ✮✮✮☆☆
My Review:
It seems I'm a bigger fan of Aguirre's sci-fi series vs her PNRs. (If you haven't already, you must check out Sirantha Jax, The Dred Chronicles and The Honors.) I don't know where to begin with my thoughts about this one. Most of my thoughts are spoilery, so I've blocked my rambles.
(view spoiler)
I could go on, but I don't wanna. I'm settling on 3-stars because, when broken down, about half the book worked for me and half didn't. I guess? Maybe I wanted it to work so badly that I'm not going any lower. Either way, I don't know that I'll continue on with the series.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Book: The Curse of Tenth Grave
Author: Darynda Jones
Date Read: 10/21/22
How it fits: UF List
Rating: 5 stars
Review: This is a favorite series of mine mainly because I love all the characters, main and supporting. This book picks up where the last one left off. Charley has regained her memory and is back in New Mexico. Reyes, Cookie, Uncle Bob, and all the other characters are back as well. Charley has a secret that she learned about Reyes and she is struggling with how to handle it. She wants so badly to get her daughter back but knows that hiding her and keeping away from her is the best course of action. Between struggling with these issues, making sure her daughter stays safe, and handling some PI cases, Charley has her hands full. A fun read as more and more is revealed about Charley and Reyes.

Happy reading!

Shelf #3 ~ 22 Oct: Haunted House
The Haunting of Maddy Clare

Shelf #2 ~ 15 Oct: Witch(es)
Book:

Author: Yasmine Galenorn
Date read: 10/22/22
How it fits: Shelf #1, pg 5, shelved 15x as witch

Rating: 2 stars
Review: This one was a bit disappointing. It felt like it started out in the middle of a story, using acronyms and character names as if the reader already knows what is going on. That was annoying. Then there was the characters themselves, they just felt one-dimensional and flat. I also wasn't really able to follow the plot, it was confusing and didn't really make sense to me. So this is one series that I won't be adding to my "must-read" list.

Shelf #2 ~ 15 Oct: Witch(es)

Book: Beguiled
Author: Darynda Jones
Date read: 10/23/22
How it fits: MPG Witches
Rating: 4 stars
Review: This is another fun series by Darynda Jones. The MC here is a witch and not just any witch but one of the three most powerful witches in the world. And forty-something Defiance Dayne has only just come into her powers due to a spell her grandmother put on her to suppress her powers and protect her from evil forces out to steal her power and kill her. Complicated, yes. Only with her grandmother's death does Defiance receive her powers and learn about the supernatural world that she is an important part of. This is another series with a great bunch of characters, including the grandmother (she may have died but she's back), the best friend Annette (who is much more than she seems at first), a very sexy wolf shifter and protector, the coven members, Defiance's adoptive fathers (yes, a gay couple), and last but certainly not least, Percy, the home that Defiance has inherited. Never a dull moment. Looking forward to continuing the series to see what happens next.

Love at First Haunt by Carrie Pulkinen
Series: Haunted Ever After #1
Shelf #3: Haunted House (house on cover & haunted house)
Read: 24 Oct
Rating: ✯✯½
My Review:
I've enjoyed a lot of Pulkinen's books, but I just didn't like the characters in this one or maybe I didn't like them together? I did like Allison's gifts though; she's an empath who performs Reiki, has the ability to see, talk to and help spirits pass over, and, of course, can sense the feelings of others.
Allison's been burnt by a wealthy man in the past, so she shies away from rich men. Logan's a handsome billionaire with a playboy public persona, so she's immediately uninterested until she senses his pain and loneliness. 🙄
Logan is struggling with a lot of issues: serious OCD, fear of becoming his cheating father, nightmares of his future wife dying. Because of these, he avoids connecting with any women on an emotional level and sticks to one night stands. But, when he sees Allison, who stands out in the crowd because her lack of dressy attire, he's intrigued. Really? 🙄
Lastly, the big reveal behind the ghost and explains Logan's fears, his first reaction is “I wouldn’t think it’d be high enough to kill her, though.” Not ... That explains it! I'm free to love! And, then comes the famously dreaded (by me) 'I can't stay with you because I'm bad for you, even though I love you, you love me' trope.
(view spoiler) 🙄
So, not the book for me, but maybe for others. I might read the rest of the trilogy to see what happens with the two best friends, but I'm in no rush.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
