Steph (angel4492) | 32741 comments Hiya, Team Caps! Thanks for volunteering to guide your team through a round of BookShelf Bingo!

Your job, should you choose to accept it, will require a few things:
1 ~ Be our go-to person should we have any questions about your team
2 ~ Organize your teammate's weekly reads for each shelf/category so that the BSB Ninjas can quickly and easily verify and approve your stamp request(s)
2a ~ Create a master list in a post (preferably on the first page of your team's thread) and update it weekly or as often as necessary
2b ~ Post your team's stats on the Captain's Log prior to requesting a stamp
3 ~ Encourage and motivate your team (you may also ask to borrow Judithe's whip whenever necessary)
4 ~ Post regularly to ensure your team is communicating and on track each week
4a ~ Send them a PM and friendly poke if they haven't posted at least once a week, noted their book choice, and/or appear to have dropped out of webspace
5 ~ Send us a PM (Steph, Sandra or Judithe) should you need us for any reason throughout the game

Venom in the Veins Jennifer Estep
Venom in the Veins (Elemental Assassin, #17) by Jennifer Estep

Read: 10.09.22
Rating: 4 stars
Review:

"Tonight is going to be awesome."

Finn's boss Stuart Mosley is attacked after a dinner with Finn and Gin. As Gin looks into the assault she is drawn into a web involving a former hit and the long reaching tendrils of now dead Mab Monroe.

I was binge reading this series for a while and then just let it go for a bit. This installment did not disappoint. Gin's dream sequences give us a glimpse into her past. I kept waiting for her to
realize that the dreams were a clue to the current situation.

The mysterious Hugh Tucker of the even more mysterious Circle plays a big part in the plot. I'm not sure how I feel about his actions towards Gin. He is such a contradiction.

Alanna Eaton is a wicked vampire who is back in Ashland to recover her family estate. The fact that Alanna has ties to Gin through her work as the Spider is intriguing and adds lots of action to the story.

This book is filled with vicious fights, family secrets, and lots of good food. (Although the Pork Pit is not as front and center as usual.)

I both read and listened to this book. Even knowing that it is set in the South (and being a Southern), the narrator threw me a bit in the beginning. Finn's voice did not sound at all like it does in my head. It was still enjoyable.

I highly recommend this series if you have not had the chance to meet Gin Blanco.

I read six or seven back to back. I knew I needed to get back to it to see what was going on with The Circle. There was a bit of a bombshell at the end. I probably should have read the next one for vampires.

Week 1 Vampires
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Read: 10.10.22
Rating: 4 stars
Review:
I really enjoyed this read. This was a quick light read. I will continue the series. Different take on vampires. They are called Moroi and they feed but do not kill their feeders. There are Strigori who are undead and are out to kill the Moroi. Then here are Guardians who pledge to protect the Moroi. They story is a typical YA story. Nothing earth shattering.

I hope hubby feels better. That book looks interesting.

Today should be a normal 8-9 hours. At least I’m seeing patients today and not in the OR. I’m getting too old to stand for 12+ hours at a time.

Hope hubby feels better.

I finished my vampire book and the free space read. Will have posted before shelf call, hopefully today.

I enjoyed Vampire Academy well enough. The last few books really got better. Liked the bloodlines spinoff much better.

Anyone watching the Peacock/NBC/Universal channel tv series? So far, I like it well enough. They moved setting from USA to undisclosed Eastern Europe looking location which was okay (all the slavic sounding names and customs plus "court" stuff works better in a castle setting). Most of the characters seem softened and younger but at least aren't as angsty.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments The Hob and Hound Pub (Sam Quinn, #4) by Seana Kelly

Vampires shelf

The Hob and Hound Pub by Seana Kelly
Finished: October 9, 2022
Series: Sam Quinn, #4
Rating: ★★★½☆
Number of pages: 377

Review: A good book. But, honestly, didn't seem to be a part of the series. Maybe because a change of location away from pub and lack of familiar characters that gave the series its "flavor."

Sam and Clive take their honeymoon in Europe. A few opening romantic pages then off to briefly (and boringly) hit various countries with murky stalkers and "battles" or murkier conversations with fae, dragons, vampires -- including notorious historical figures she should have been excited to meet that were bland -- finishing with some resolution to the dragon's story.

Had this been a short story of the beginning and ending, would have liked it better. I love the series and this installment did move the storyline along. But the originality of worldbuilding and depth of characters I enjoyed was missing.

There was a bonus short set back in the pub and a prequel to this that made the read worthwhile and improved my star rating. Not sure it's included in every edition.

Still continuing the series. Hopefully next book returns to what it was in first three books. I noticed author was blogging about her real life European trip so possibly this book was some chunked in notes from that versus actually Sam and her pub and love of reading and interesting gang of characters.

I do have all the books and the spinoff series. Hoping to get them all read in the next 6 months.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Shadowed Steel (Heirs of Chicagoland, #3) by Chloe Neill

Free Space from group bookshelves

Shadowed Steel by Chloe Neill
Finished: October 10, 2022
Series: Heirs of Chicagoland, #3
Rating: ★★★★☆
Number of pages: 336

Review: Enjoyable read. Still missing the action and intensity of the root Chicagoland series -- but Elisa and Connor are really growing on me as they grow as adults and in their relationship. That's the enjoyable part. Yes, they are standing on their own two feet but it was disappointing how little support they had from Ombudsman and others. The battles and villain didn't do it for me; I hope they don't keep introducing new characters as red herrings or murky intentions.

Enjoyed it a lot, partly because author is a very good writer. It did feel like it was a filler episode rather than move plot significantly along. Looking forward to more in series.

Mercy Blade Faith Hunter
Mercy Blade (Jane Yellowrock, #3) by Faith Hunter

On page 9 of Vampires shelf-tagged 284 times

Read: 10.11.22
Rating: 3 stars
Review:

I rolled over, taking most of the covers with me as I stretched.

The third book in the Jane Yellowrock series opens with Jane and her new boyfriend Rick clearing out her apartment in the NC mountains. She has accepted a long-term contract with Leo, the Master of New Orleans. Without warning, weres come out to the general public and all hell breaks loose.

I really liked the ftrst two books in this series. This one fell a bit flat for me. I still adore Jane and her kickass ways, but she seemed a bit whiny and clingy about Rick and his "disappearance". Personally, I would rather see her with Bruiser. Although Bruiser's loyalty to Leo could be a problem.

Jane is set up time and again in situations that could easily lead to her death. Fortunately, Girrard "Gee" DiMercy comes to her rescue when he is introduced. Gee is Leo's former Mercy Blade and is trying to get back in his good graces.

The whole situation with Rick drove me nuts. I know he is an undercover cop and has to do things that do not blow his cover. However, I think he really pushed it to the limit. I was feeling pretty good about him when the book opened with him and Jane in the mountains. It quickly went downhill after that. And I not sure I can even come to terms with his ending in the book. Of course, as much as this book didn't speak to me, I will have to read the next one to see what the heck happens.

Then we have Molly's sister, Evangeline. I don't know what scheme she is running but it does not bode well for Jane.

The book had some great battle scenes. The ongoing good vs evil and evil vs evil is a great storyline. Perhaps I wasn't feeling the book because I listened to it rather than reading it. Although the narrator did a good job. Sometimes I just have to go back and hold the book in my hand to get the full effect. I really do like Jane and her inner Beast/Big Cat and want to continue with the series.

Actually, more of a 3.5 than a true 3-star rating.
