Lots of people have grudges against Mosley, but the more I investigate, the more Mosley’s problems seem to be connected to some of my own, especially when it comes to the Circle, the evil, shadowy group that is secretly responsible for much of the crime and corruption in Ashland.


But when another blast from my dark and deadly past as the Spider comes to light, I wonder if I’ll be able to survive this dangerous new enemy, who has a burning thirst for revenge that will only be satisfied with one my death.

The problem with a smash hit is there is a lot of pressure put on writers to keep churning out stories.
17 Books.
Has Gin Blanco strapped on the water-skis and jumped that shark?
Probably not yet.
The books are still entertaining enough but honestly I'm reading them out of habit more than enthusiasm.

I've been saying this for a few years...

There are characters in the Elemental Assassin world who can carry their own series.

I'd be first in line to buy Book One of the Sophia Deveraux series. Bria and Xavier, two honest cops on a corrupt police force...I'd buy that.

I know there are folks who still love and devour the EA books but personally I think maybe it's time for Gin to fade into the background and become a secondary character and turn the focus to some of these other great characters.

This is one of my favorite series. I enjoy the assassin/great cook Gin Blanco and her cohorts. Since the author revealed that Gin’s family were involved with the illuminati-ish group “The Circle”, I’ve been waiting to see which one of Gin’s parents is still alive. That didn’t occur in this book but I know the deceased savant Fletcher knew which one of Gin’s parents was into shady business and I can’t wait for him to reveal it in one of his notes to the gang.

While I continue to enjoy the plot, I am impatiently waiting for the big reveal of Hugh Tucker’s motivations because he is a gray area in this story. He is portrayed as a villain, but he goes out of his way to assist Gin, Finn and Bria. So, what exactly is Hugh’s deal? I am also waiting for a villain on the level Mab Monroe. No one, not Mab’s daughter, Finn’s mom Deidra or anyone else has captured my attention like the elemental sociopath Mab Monroe. I want the Spider to have another great rival, and I am not convinced the real power behind the Circle will provide that. I hope so, but I am certainly waiting for the next one.

VENOM IN THE VEINS is book seventeen in the Elemental Assassin series. If you haven’t read this series yet and you’re a fan of Urban Fantasy, I would highly suggest checking this series out. It’s filled with action and suspense, as well as an amazing lead named Gin Blanco.

This book continues her journey as the Spider. As an assassin and the queen of the Ashland underworld, Gin has got a lot on her plate. As expected, another threat arises and in this installment, Estep delivers yet another fun ride.

These books are super easy to read and fall in love with. If you like the kickass heroine type then you’ll probably love Gin. This series doesn’t have too much humor but just enough to charm you so it definitely keeps in line with the deadly feel of the series.

This particular book has a slightly slower start for me. I think that can happen when there’s more dialogue but after the first few chapters, it does pick up. So although this book isn’t my favorite of the series, I still think this series is a solid one.

If you are an urban fantasy fan, Jennifer Estep is a must read and Gin and the Elemental Assassin series is an absolutely must read.

Venom in the Veins was an enjoyable addition to the Elemental Assassin series but had a slow start, with it picking up about 1/4th of the way in. I have to admit that it is reminiscent to a few earlier installments and I did check to see if I had the wrong book thinking I was accidentally re-reading an earlier edition. No I wasn't and yes, it wouldn't be the first time I made that mistake...hey, cut me a little slack I've read thousands :D. Okay, back to my review. The reason for the confusion, this book starts like a few others, Gin is facing off with the off-spring of a previously executed foe. The now adult child is out for revenge and is maybe more powerful and evil than the parent. The similarities between the parent and child, now adult, are shockingly deja vu-ish... Hence the deja vuishness to previous installments. BUT once you get past the first few chapters, Estep's magical ability to wrap her readers up into a fictional, urban fantasy world erupts and you find yourself capitulated into a world where elemental powers, crime lords and vampire do exist. By the conclusion, you find yourself riveted to the pages and wishing you didn't have to leave Gin, Finn and the rest of her family.

A member of The Circle like her mother, Alanna has resources galore at her back and a reputation for a killer bite but so does Gin and when push comes to shove, Gin proves that the venom in her bite is deadly.

Jennifer Estep’s deadliest assassin is back and once again must use her skills to protect a friend in the 17th installment; Venom in the Veins. Set in the small town of Asheville, North Carolina, Gin aka The Spider, a former assassin for hire turned queen of the underworld, has experienced multiple changes since the beginning. A former loner who was an assassin by night and restaurant owner by day, Gin’s alter ego is now out in the open and she is surrounded by friends, family, and a lover. When her favorite banker is attacked, Gin must search her past to find answers. Solid world building and a well-established character base have left the bulk of entertainment to the plotlines, but I fear the time has come to Estep to wrap it up. The feeling of deja vu is strong as we follow a familiar path and watch Gin once again fight a new enemy for things she has done in the past. The push on the arc was welcomed and I like that Estep is still able to surprise me with the actions of a longtime antagonist. While I enjoy this series overall for its female-centric arc, I’m ready for the final battle between Gin and the Circle.

One of the features of the last three or four books has been Gin’s incompetence. She is supposed to be the best at what she does, but the author seems to have forgotten this. At the start of this book she is trying to stop a thug, but surprisingly this Giant is actually quicker and more skilled than her, she misses him with her knife twice, he then picks her up and slams her into the roof of a car.
Her first fight with Alanna was an even bigger disaster, with her being totally outclassed, it seemed every time Gin tried to hit Alanna she was ‘much faster’. This is the ultimate Assassin !!?

I don’t mind Gin getting beaten but why does the author keep making her useless.

As for the story, it seemed like it was a rehash of previous plots, every villain Gin has killed seems to have an equally unstable relation waiting to come back for vengeance. All these baddies just seem to be so similar they are becoming boring and more and more ridiculous.

The ongoing story about the ‘Circle’ had a few interesting developments and book ends with a little bit of a cliff-hanger.

Well we are up to book #17 now and I am still enjoying the violent little assassin who loves to cook (WARNING: Don't read this book if you are hungry). I have to say that the basics of these books are pretty much becoming formulaic but only in a very general way in the relationship with the bad guys/gals and final battle BUT the introduction of The Circle and the enigma that is Hugh Tucker have breathed life back into this series and added a hint of mystery to a lot of things.

One of the most frustrating things to me is I can't help but like Hugh Tucker a bit and there appears to be dozens of layers to this guy. We don't know who he really is, what his motives are or even if he is some kinda hero wanting his own revenge and that is just it, we don't know hardly anything other than he was in love with Gin's mother is seems.

This story kept me glued to the pages which says something because I was in a hurry to get to another book which usually means I scan a few pages here and there but I could not do that for several reasons, not the least of which is that the author is telling us a very interesting story in small bits throughout the book from when she was much younger and so scanning was out because you had to find out what happened and since she was feeding it out in bits throughout the book you had to slow down enough to read it all. Since the story of her younger self has a direct bearing on the main story in this book you have to get it all to understand a few things.

The end holds a bit of a surprise and I have to wonder when this series is going to have to end, it seems like we may have taken a step towards that in the last few pages of this book so hold on, looks like a bumpy ride ahead.

A few weeks have passed since Gin’s confrontation with the Doll Maker, so of course, it’s time for things to go sideways in Ashland again. This time, someone is targeting her friend, and Finn’s boss, Stewart Mosley. And everything appears to be tied to the upcoming auction of Mab Monroe’s possessions and a person of interest who has her eye set on making sure things are just right.

Venom in the Veins is the seventeenth book in the Elemental Assassin series. The cast of characters has grown, and I love that Gin’s circle of friends has expanded. She has learned to turn to her family and friends for help and support, giving up pieces of herself and trust to them. It’s made Gin a better character, and I appreciate her drive to keep them safe.

I love Gin. I do. But... at Book 17, things no longer feel as fresh and exciting as they used too. The world building has been solidly established, so the constant need to remind readers of Gin’s history and idiosyncrasies is starting to annoy me. Additionally, I felt this storyline is old news. Once again, Gin faces down a person from and/or connected to her past. It just seems like that storyline has played out a number of times in the series.

The overall story arc relating to the mysterious Circle continues to grab my interest, as does the main face of the group, Hugh Tucker. I enjoyed seeing more of Hugh, especially with his actions in this title. With that said, I would have preferred more movement forward within the plot. The little tidbits tossed in with each book aren’t enough, and I’d like for Gin to catch a break and discover more.

In the end, I have mixed feelings after finishing Venom in the Veins. I enjoy Gin and her gang. Watching her pull the clues together to take down the bad guys is thrilling. However, I feel like Gin is running in circles (pun intended) as she tries to find out more about the threat of the Circle. She’s not really getting any closer to discovering what the Circle is, who they are, what her parents had to do with it. Additionally, the storylines are starting to feel too much the same.

Sliding in to an Elemental Assassin book for me is like donning a comfortable old sweater at the beginning of fall. It’s pleasant and familiar. Not really flashy or new, but that’s not why I pick it up. I know what to expect and I like it.

As this installment begins, Gin still searching for answers about the mysterious Circle. But more pressing right now is the fact that someone seems to be targeting Finn’s boss at the bank, Moseley. He is attacked early in the book and Gin is convinced it has something to do with the bigger picture. She goes on high alert, determined to protect him as he puts on a high profile auction of Mab Munro‘s personal effects.

As in several recent books, the current happenings end up tying in to old memories of Gin’s and they manifest in dreams. That, along with one of Fletcher’s old files tip her off that it all has something to do with a vampire she killed many years ago. The story follows her as she unravels those connections and works to keep Mosley safe.

When I say these books are comfortable and familiar, I acknowledge that if I read too many of them close together, the similarities from book to book may drive me a little crazy. Even with a year or so since my last read, I find myself on the borderline of being put off by the author’s use of the same plot devices. Like the dreams, for instance. Or how Fletcher’s files always manage to come through with just enough information to get her started on the right path. Every book has something that’s sloppy, sloppy. Every book, we are reminded that Gin and her boyfriend use condoms but she still takes her little white pills. Maybe these are touchstones for fans of the series. Maybe comfortable and familiar is what the author is going for. These books definitely stay in the expected lane and for many readers, I know that is a good thing. But maybe not for everyone.

As always, I am a fan of Gin. She is such a kick ass protagonist. She is fierce and strong, but despite her propensity for killing people, she is very loyal and human in a world where humanity is almost a handicap.

We have some advancement of the larger plot. We finally get to see the big bad guy and it answers my burning question of whether or not it is Gin’s father. I won’t spoil it.

I’m still down to see where this series goes from here. I want to see Gin have a happy ever after, but for an assassin like her I’m not sure what that looks like. I do need to take breaks in between books in the series for the reasons I talked about above, but I will be back. I’ll keep you informed.

I can’t believe I missed this book when it was first released, but there is a silver lining to procrastination – or not paying attention. Now I don’t have to wait very long before Sharpest Sting because it is scheduled to be released in October. 😉

To be honest, I probably should done a quick re-read of Snared before I read Venom in the Veins. After all, it had been 2 years since I finished the last book in the Elemental Assassin series. The author threw in enough memories and recaps that it was easy to keep up though. My favorite memories though were of her and Fletcher, which is usually the case.

Gin has proven over and over again that she would do anything to protect her family and that circle seems to be growing. Almost as much as her list of enemies. There’s little down time in Venom in the Veins, there’s also a lot of ground covered and plenty of danger. It also seems that each answered question or solved mystery is followed closely by even more. Not the least of which was the unexpected ally that Gin gained, which made her trust him even less.

There was also an unexpected revelation at the end of Venom in the Veins that should prove to make things in Sharpest Sting even more interesting. Like I said, it’s a good thing I don’t have a long wait. It’s going to be hard enough to wait until October to see what happens next.

Gin may be paranoid when it comes to the Circle, but she's been right too many times to keep track. Could the Circle, including the mysterious Mason, leader of the Circle, or Gin's nemesis Hugh Tucker, who seems to be around at the most curious times, be involved?

Rinse and repeat! Predictable! The use of convenient dream / nightmare sequences to remember things over used in the last few books. Too many inane statements including .... the black plastic on the floor that was just waiting to soak up my blood. .... seriously! To top it off, there was very little movement along the series arc, even the big reveal was rather obvious! Disappointed!

Venom in the Veins is the 17th installment of Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin series. This is a series that triggers my grabby hands when a new book is coming out - I just can't wait to set my eyes on the next installment. But I'm warning you - don't read these if you are trying to diet! There is enough discussion of delicious southern comfort food to make your mouth water and having you running out to your local BBQ joint.

Our heroine, Gin Blanco a/k/a The Spider, is continuing to investigate the mysterious Circle, and its shrouded members. But when one of our favorite bankers, and Finn's boss, Stuart Mosley, appears to be the target of a nefarious plot, you know that Gin will step in and do what she does best. And of course the movers and shakers around town, if they aren't bowing and scraping to the Queen of the Underworld, having to be working against her with the bigger badder nemesis.

I liked the layout of this story. Our villain wasn't quite coming after Gin, so she intercedes on behalf of those she considers her family. For an assassin, Gin has a huge heart and has now adopted quite a lot of people as "hers" - those you don't mess with on pain of death. As this series has progressed, we have learned more about Stuart Mosley and his friendship with Fletcher, Gin's mentor and father figure. And with this story, we see that no good deed goes unpunished where Stuart is concerned. The villain here, and her reasons for the plot, were quite immature and selfish... so she was really easy to hate.

I continue to enjoy the vast array of secondary characters that Gin has brought into the fold. Finn will always be a favorite, but the Deveraux sisters and Owen are very high up on that list. I love the banter between Finn and Gin, and we get several humorous moments, like this:

"If you start admiring your reflection in that, I'm going to take that knife away and cut you with it," I warned. "Knives are for eating. Or stabbing people. Nothing else."

After Gin takes care of business, as in previous books, we get some insight into what will be happening next. And man are these revelations bombshells! I am so excited for the next installment, but also sad when I think we may be approaching the end of the series at some point. I hope not. This is one of my favorites.

I normally read the Elemental Assassin series in ebook, but I had to use up a few Audible credits, so I grabbed it in audio. I do love it in audio! It just so happened that I was finishing up with another review audio, so I jumped into Venom In The Veins before going back to my audio binge series. Perfect timing. I am a huge fan of this series. There is so much to love!

Gin is still trying to find out as much as she can about the Circle and who the mysterious Mason could be. Gin and Finn are hoping to get some more information from Stuart Mosely since he was friends with Fletcher and may know more. However, Stuart is totally buried in the setting up of the auction of Mab Monroe's estate. Unfortunately, in his harried state, he almost gets himself kidnapped. Thanks to Gin and her paranoia he is saved, but a whole new mystery opens up on who wants to hurt him. It also opens up some old wounds that Gin has been carrying around for years. But, one can only stay sympathetic for so long before that person does things that need to be stopped.

In every Elemental Assassin book, we are treated to many food references. Venom In The Veins made my diet a miserable thing to be on while listening to all the goodies everyone was eating. I love how this theme runs throughout the series and is something I look forward to in each book. Jennifer Estep knows how to write the descriptions of what each individual thing is so that it would make your mouth water.

The biggest draw of this series for me is the adrenaline rush. Gin is always in the middle of a crisis and her fights skim the edge of her death so closely that you never know whether she is going to survive. There are so many moments where you sit holding your breath just waiting to see if the next blow is going to take Gin down for good. She seems to get matched up with stronger and stronger enemies. It is exciting and keeps you entranced in the book. I think I broke one of my listening records with this one. I couldn't stay out of the story long!

I was a tad disappointed with how a certain individual comes to Gin's aid at a crucial moment. I prefer to see Gin pull herself up on her own. However, the information that unfolds at the end is fascinating and has me absolutely dying for the next book! It seems like with every new installment, Gin's life gets more and more involved in the Circle. The revelation she makes in Venom In The Veins was mind blowing!

The narration was a pleasure to listen to. I love Lauren Fortgang's southern accents. I think I enjoy listening to this series more than reading because of the narration. 4 Stars... This one brought the creep factor with a cannibalistic vampire!!! Once again Gin must face down her past in order to protect those she loves while continuing to uncover the mystery of the Circle... With a surprise twist at the end, this book certainly keeps the reader's interest... I will say, this far into the series, I have noticed a pattern to the author's writing that is not necessarily a negative but perhaps brings a bit of predictability to each read.. I continue to enjoy this series and the overarching storyline is intriguing, but I find myself able to identify key phrases used throughout the series that simply makes each book repetitive... However, with characters I have come to love and a storyline that peaks one's interest, I will certainly continue the series until the bitter sweet end:)

Well, thank god this book didn’t start on a failed mission. So there’s that.

UF is not a romance based story. I get that and appreciate it. However, if you introduce a romantic relationship into the story, as an author, you open doors to expectations. Gin and Owen, whom I adore, relationship is weird. Two grown people who are past the dating stage and are in love. They are adults with no responsibilities to minors. Yet, they don’t spend many nights together. It’s strange to me. Frankly, I’m surprised they are living together by now as they aren’t saving themselves for marriage. And the only reason why they aren’t is because it’s a convenient plot device. Having them not living together makes it easier for the author to move the plot forward a certain way. However it makes the story awkward from me as a reader. It’s almost as if the relationship was put in not because the author wanted it, but that it was required. So toss in some page time to make readers happy and then pretend Gin’s not in a relationship.

Anyway, the twist in the end was slightly unpredictable in its predictability. I wondered how the author would tie that up.

But the one thing that troubles me is how the story/series is told so that the reader guesses the outcome before Gin does. It leaves her looking stupid in the readers eyes at times. She should be smarter than this, I say too often while reading this series.

Still, it’s a series I would recommend.

This one was a bit better than the last book but I still feel like all of the awesome side characters have been watered down, we don't get to see much personality and engagement in the story. Some more things come to light this story and it would have been appropriate to see some sister bonding or something. I love Owen and really miss him actually being part of the story line - again not much personality.
I did enjoy the plot, I still enjoy the flashbacks Gin has to her past and it's about time for some revelations on the circle.
All in all looking forward to the next one

Happy to see Gin and company again. Glad to know more of her past as the Spider. Good to know more information about the Circle. How many people in Ashland are part of the Circle? Shocking to learn the identity of the leader of the Circle. Gin's uncle Mason. Does he know that Gin is his niece? Does he care?

Can't wait to read more Elemental Assassin novels!!!

I can’t believe we are up top book 17 and it’s just as much a page turner as the rest. A lot of action and some shocking secrets come to light. Another great installment!

Quick Thoughts: Loved being back in Gin and Gangs world. This did not disappoint. Was not my favorite villain but I am excited about the move forward in the overall story. As always the action was top notch and so was the snark!

Audio Thoughts: As always Lauren Fortgang nailed the narration! :) I can't imagine anyone else bringing this group alive. Also just gonna say I have a girl crush on her Finn voice. He makes me swoon!

I love Gin and the gang, I really do but I think it’s time to wrap it up and let them go. Too many recycling of elements in plot lines. Dreams, flashbacks, deja vu, etc that easily explain the stories. Gin is smart so why is it that she always forgets she knows people from her past when the memories are huge ones that no one would forget?

As far as the leader of the Circle, I’m 90% sure I know who he is and if I’m right it will be the biggest WTF, why didn’t she know that face when she sees it because she should know THAT face.

Someone from Gin's past has come back, and she is trying to kill someone Gin knows. Will this blast from the past find a way to shoehorn The Circle into it?

This new Elemental Assassin installment was exactly like an Elemental Assassin installment. This reads like every single other Elemental Assassin novel I've read for the past 6 years. While it isn't exactly a horrible thing that this book is exactly like every other one in the series (I did enjoy myself up until this point), I just really wish it will be over soon. It has run its course.

I keep reading these books mostly because I really just want more of Gin and Owen, as well as more Finn and Bria. I love the people, I don't really much care for the story anymore. And, as much as I really want to see more of the people, they're always so pushed off to the side of the book. We have seen this same exact story play out again and again for 17 books now, I wish she would give the characters time to shine.

The characters actually seem trapped in time. How much time has passed in this series by now? It has to be quite a few years by now. Yet they're still the exact same people they are when they were introduced. Gin is still the same person doing the same thing, her relationship with Owen is still in the same place. Owen's sister is still a college student, and I wouldn't be surprised if she was still in the same classes. Finn and Bria are still the exact same people in the exact same place. The lack of growth is frustrating, I want to see the characters move as people. I want them to actually be people.

This whole Circle business still feels like revisionist history. Estep needed a new idea, and oh look, a new big bad, this time there are many of them! And oh, her mother is involved? Why?! I really don't care at this point, honestly. Each book will play out like every book before it it did. I honestly can't work up any excitement for this Circle because there is nothing exciting about it, it all just plays out the same exact way.

I can say that the switch from traditional publishing to self publishing did not actually hurt the quality of this book whatsoever. These are still really well written books, even if I have grown tired of the story. That is always a fear of mine when I read a series that eventually turns self-pub, that there is going to be a drop in quality of either the story or the writing. I really think this is exactly like every single other book in the series, if you enjoyed all the rest, you will enjoy this one.

If you've read one Elemental Assassin book, you've read them all. Another solid addition to the series, even if I personally am looking for more.

When Mosley, Finn's boss, is almost abducted by muggers, Gin and Finn are in the right place at the right time. Someone is after Mosley and Gin wants to know who. At an auction of Mab Monroe's estate at the Eaton mansion, Gin gets a pretty good idea who may be involved, especially after certain details are revealed about how Mosley is involved in the care taking of the Eaton Mansion. Before the auction begins, Gin is suddenly thrust back into the past when when she comes face-to-face with an enemy. One problem - Gin killed that enemy several years ago. Now she has to figure out what is going on and how it relates to Mosley - that is, if it relates to Mosley. This newcomer is a formidable foe, having been fully trained to intimidate, stalk, and kill in the same manner as another person Gin knows. Gin certainly has her work cut out for herself. Amid the chaos, Gin is still trying the infiltrate the Circle, with an unlikely savior continually pulling her to safety. When she finally gets to put a face with the leader of the Circle, Gin's entire world shatters.

The 17th book in the Elemental Assassin series is action packed, suspenseful, and a wonderful addition to Gin's story. I found this installment of the series fresh and exciting as Gin faced the result of one of her past action actions. Gin also dug down deep in her own mind and conscience and partially blames herself for the monster she encounters in the book. She's bit more human in this book and a lot less stone-faced (pun intended) killer. I was pulled into this story and the author did a wonderful job keeping me engaged. In fact, the entire series has pulled me in and kept me engaged from the very beginning. These are the types of books that have me longing for the next one. They are written with vivid descriptions and genuine feelings, allowing the reader to become totally immersed in this world.

The twists and turns come out of nowhere and there are many surprise moments. My heart was pounding and I was on the edge of my seat through a good portion of the book. The world building continues and we learn a bit more about Gin's past and the Circle.

Even after 17 novels Jennifer Estep knows how to keep the stories interesting. I am a huge fan of the entire series.
