Oh, I hope it is not too hard for you to change your sleeping hours, are you always going to be on night or do you have some time on days? My older brother works as a night manager in a hotel, but originally he had some time for a few weeks on days instead. He preferred just working nights though.

Heather Milne | 479 comments I have started a few more meals today with my books.

By the way, do we know our placement for round two yet? I looked but I cannot find that information, maybe I am just missing it.

I'm only contracted 2 nights a week at the moment. They hinted that they might add more when I get more comfortable. But I did also say I would like as much extra as they can give me, so I will probably end up doing a mixture of night and day shifts. My contract states that they have to give me at least 11 hours between shifts so I will at least be able to get some sleep between shifts.

There's a link to the status spreadsheet in the second message on this thread. We are currently sitting at 8th out of 14, but it looks like there are two teams that are no longer playing.

Melissa | 1895 comments I’m reading an over 500 page book to get us some beverages:)

message 306: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Okay, I finished a book and just dumped ingredients there. Feel free to take food from that post :)

I don't why I forgot about that, thanks Keely.

Ok so that means "Meals with the word "chocolate", "gold", or "scallop" in the text or title, or used as a spell-it-out will attract more adults for round 3" fun. I have no idea how to include "gold" maybe in desserts? or the name but I cannot think of any right now, fun :)

I will try and fit them in to meals :)

message 309: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Chocolate will be an easy word to find, but including it in more meals will be interesting. The easiest (and one that actually makes sense) would probably be in coffee to make a mocha.

I forgot about those extra words, so thank you Heather.

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I had actually found Gold in the text of a book I'm reading. I wrote it down because it said 'gold ring' and at the time I thought it could be a bonus. I've used it with a coffee item now though.

I haven't read much the past few days, honestly I don't know where the time has gone. I doubt I will get much done the next 2 days either with me starting this new job tonight, but afterwards I should be able to get back on it.

message 311: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I survived my first two shifts. The first one I mostly just did online training in the office. The second night I shadowed my colleague so I have a much better idea of what my job actually entails now. They definitely want us to be kept busy, but once I know what I'm doing and between the two of us on shift, we would be able to get everything done with plenty time to just relax. It is actually required that I keep my phone on me for safety so I may be able to sneak in a bit of reading from my kindle app in between tasks. I don't know if I will be brave enough to do that for a while though.

It hasn't been confirmed yet because one of my colleagues had a pretty last minute change of plans, but my next shift is supposed to be Friday night which will give me plenty of time in the week to catch up on some reading.

message 312: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments Oh, that is exciting Keely! How are you feeling now with your sleeping and night shift?

What are you planning to read this week?

I have only read a bit with the help of audiobooks alongside my book as I have been feeling really unwell after my corona jab :( Hopefully, this week goes better.

message 313: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments My mum is complaining that I'm sleeping most of the day even when I'm not working, but I don't see what the issue is. If there is a reason for me to get up earlier in the day, then I will. But otherwise I think I've adapted well.

I'm probably just going to listen to audiobooks while I do stuff. I'm going to finish the book The Housemaid today. I had less than an hour left when I stopped before sleep. After, I'm probably going to stick to books that I could potentially finish in a day (but are more than 300 pages). I've got a few murder mystery books lined up which seem to be good for food items as they seem to mostly be set in cafes or restaurants or by the sea.
I signed up for wheel so I'm holding off on any books that are long so I can read them then and get decent points :p

Oh no, I hope you feel better soon! I felt unwell after one of mine and it wasn't fun. Just take it easy and try and get as much sleep/rest as you can.

Good job finishing those first two shifts. It's always the first few weeks of a job before everyone settle in to what you are doing :) I hope you are getting rest when you need it.
Let us know if you really like any of those mysteries. I'm always up for a good one.

Thanks, I feel better now. I am sure you will get used to sleeping differently and your mum will get used to it too.

Good luck with settling into your job :)

message 318: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I'm glad you are feeling better :)

And thank you both, I'm sure I'll get settled soon.

I'm really struggling with one of my books. Bed and Breakfast and Murder just isn't holding my attention well, but I've already used words from it. I'll keep powering through. Hopefully the story will pick up soon. I would like to be done with it by the end of the weekend so I can start something more exciting. It's currently my book I read before bed and it is doing a very good job of sending me to sleep!

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments When I looked up gold in food, I found this

"Among the dishes and beverages in which edible gold is implemented there are cakes and sweet desserts, soups, pastas, risottos, sushi, cocktails and wines. Since it is used as tasteless garnish, edible gold is usually the ingredient at the top of the dish at direct contact with food."

So I am guessing we could add it to pretty much every pasta, curry or dessert (if it was a big book)

message 320: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments That is good to know! The dishes will just be fancier (and more expensive).

message 321: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments interesting I don't think I gave seen edible gold used in anything other than sweet things :)

message 322: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments So weird!
I guess if you are very fancy, you eat the stuff?

message 323: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments Melissa wrote: "So weird!

Yeah, I have used it on cakes and chocolate truffles I think for a special occasion. I am not sure I would want it in anything else it is a decoration haha.

Oh, I just remembered that there is (or was I've not seen it for a while) also the Gold Leaf Vodka, it has edible gold in it.

message 324: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I remember seeing that, but never tried it. Me and vodka don't get along very well.

I've seen edible gold used in cakes and chocolates too. I can't say I've actually tried anything with it on. I dont really see the point if it's going to cost me more and it doesn't actually add to the flavour. If I were to use it in things I make myself for guests then that would be a different story :p

message 325: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Does this round end on November 30?

message 326: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Yes, I believe so and then this challenge will be over :(

Also, I must apologise again. I've read nowhere near as much as I should have. I just don't know where the time keeps going! I'm working right now but I've got the next three nights off so hopefully I can catch up a bit then.

message 327: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments And, edible gold has some weird health benefits (I didn't read that much into it).

Last month I had a week off from work and this month a week off with Covid, so all I did was read. So hopefully that helps.

message 328: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I hope Covid hasn't affected you too much. I got it just after last christmas and it was horrible so I hope you've only had mild symptoms, if any.

message 329: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments It felt like a bad case of bronchitis. I wouldn't have even thought to test for Covid but my mom "made" me. Its been more than 2 weeks and I still am coughing. It's interesting how differently it affects people. From just a muscle ache to death.

message 330: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Yeah it felt the same for me, I will still coughing for at least 3 weeks and then when the cough finally went away, I still struggled for a while with being short of breath occasionally, especially when going up stairs. I hope your cough goes away quickly and you dont have any lingering symptoms.

message 331: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I totally agree. I had a hard time breathing with COVID. Thank god I got it after the "jabs"!
My characters in my books are not eating enough. I keep telling them to slow down and grab a bite to eat. Maybe have a romantic dinner, but they don't listen.

message 332: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Haha, it's the same with one of my books. It just goes "after breakfast..." and I'm just there like " but what did you have for breakfast?!"

message 333: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments I hope you are feeling better Alicia, and don't have any longer symptoms.

I read an Agatha Christie book where they kept saying that they were eating but not what it was. I found it very annoying, I could help but think but what are you eating, I want to know it all!

message 334: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments Two years ago, everything I read and listened to was very descriptive on what they ate. Especially Darynda Jones. It has been way more of a challenge. I have to keep reminding myself to also write down character names when I am listening to audiobooks.

Thanks all. I am still having respiratory issues. I think that if after another week I might go to urgent care bc it might require steroids (I also have asthma).

message 335: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments That sounds rough, Alicia. I hope it gets better really soon.

I just started a new audiobook and Gold was mentioned 5 times in just the first chapter! I wrote down the individual times for them. I've got to go to work soon, but when I have time, I'll play around and see if I can get some of those Golds into our meals.

message 336: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I'm sorry Alicia. What a strange thing this COVID is. I hope you breathe better soon.

Finally, some of my characters ate.

message 337: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments Mine too, eating that is. In Christmas books, go figure.

message 338: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I'm trying to get as much read as I can before the end. I will definitely finish 3 more (two are already on the spreadsheet) and maybe one or two after that as well.
I just started a book called Not Quite Nice which has recipes at the end of every chapter so is giving me lots of options. The word Vinegar was just used so I'll be able to finish the fish and chips that was missing a vinegar the last time I checked. Salt and Pepper have been mentioned a few times too which are always useful.

I'm going to be busy this weekend, but I should have time on Monday to work on using any words/letters we still have to use.

I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I've been feeling a bit burnt out so I haven't read as much as I would have liked. I'm trying to give a final push for these last few days.

I hope you are all well and have a good weekend.

message 339: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I am going to try to add my books too. Yes, I think I'm waning a bit with recording the foods in my books!

We had Thanksgiving this past weekend - lots of food, lots of turkey! I hope all of you who celebrate Thanksgiving had a good one :)

message 340: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I found a book that covers a couple of the letters we needed to finish words. We still need an E and an I to finish two more meals.

message 341: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments I have added the E so we are just looking for an I. If I finish reading the two books I am reading I might be able to pick up another book. But I am not sure.

I really want to start reading The Fiery Cross, the fifth outlander book but I know that will not help for the challenge as it is over 1000 pages long and there is no way i will finish it before the end of the month.

message 342: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments That's fair enough. If I finish the two books I'm currently reading today, then I might be able to get a short audiobook done tomorrow.

message 343: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments Well ladies, I don't think I will be home from work tomorrow before our time is up so I am entering my last books now as being finished tomorrow (finishing tomorrow). It's been fun. And a challenge. lol. We did alright being down 2 other people.

message 344: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I just plunked in some meals, and will probably put in a couple more, but I'm mostly done too. I have enjoyed being on this team!

message 345: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments If you need, I had 2 letters left for this book;
Title: How the Grump Saved Christmas
Phil, Janelle, Nigel, Faye, Marigold, Russell, Bella, Harvey, Damien, Hattie, Dale, Cole Phillips, Ms. Myers

message 346: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I will try and play around with what's left in a little bit. I was asked if I could work this evening, but haven't had it confirmed. If I am, I'll be working when the challenge ends, but when I get home I'll assign meals unless one of you get there first.

I still think we did very well with just the 4 of us so I am proud of us no matter where we end up on the scoreboard.
