Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Well spotted Heather, I tried so hard to keep that in mind when I made any drinks/desserts but I guess I got too excited about the idea of making chocolate milkshake that I forgot that one. I'll check later if one of my 500+ page books had chocolate in and mix some stuff around.

We could use some more letters, but scavenger words also wouldn't hurt. If I manage to have time, I'm planning on listening to a shorter audiobook just to get one or more vowels to play with so I can try and use up the letters we have remaining.
I would be tempted to say scavenger words over letters just because it is easier to make things from them, but if you don't think there is enough variety of words then by all means use the letters.

I have nothing planned for the next few days so if any of you are too busy to add meals from what you find in your books, let me know and I can play around with stuff. Might as well do something useful with my time other than reading :p

Melissa | 1895 comments I should finish Horse this week. Keely, please play around and make meals! Heather, thanks so much for fixing my tea!

message 153: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Okay, I fixed the chocolate milkshake problem. It is now a strawberry milkshake.

Melissa, I may be being blind but I can't see which book you are talking about.

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I found a word that would work with many the letters we have left, but we are missing an E to finish it. Anyone think they are going to squeeze in another spell-it-out book?

Also, Melissa, you have a few books with some scavenger words left. If you could list the words, I could help try and make some meals with them if you want. You don't have to list the locations if it is easier, I can let you know what I used after and then you can just go and fill in the blanks.

Heather Milne | 479 comments I am going to finish Nightmare before the end of the week. It has a character called Evans, I will add it to the sheet along with the other letters later tonight.

message 156: by Heather (last edited Sep 27, 2022 09:32AM) (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments I have added the letters I have come across so far. Please feel free to use any of my unused letters to make meals.

I added Nightingale for the N to the SPINACH quiche :)

message 157: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Great, thanks Heather :)

I'll have another play around a bit later. Which reminds me that my boyfriend saw me messing about with the spreadsheet and when I tried to explain it all to him, he called it "homework". But I strangely enjoy doing it so it's not homework for me.

message 158: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments Haha thanks for all you are doing with the "homework". It saves me from doing it and gives me a little more time to read.

message 159: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I've been having a bit of trouble sleeping so I've been doing most of my reading in bed when I should be sleeping which I'm not complaining about as it let me catch up on some books and I have the luxury to nap in the day if I need to.

I managed to use all but 3 letters we had available for the spell-it-outs. If we get anymore, we can probably manage one more meal from letters.

message 160: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I’ll get the book out from the library and see if I can scan for any other foods. Those were all I caught on audio

message 161: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments I can finish the sandwich for 85 if you are ok with it having lime on it instead of lemon??

message 162: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments Also, I had 1 letter left in Vile Secrets and am reading a book with lots of A characters so I can do it as spell-it-out to

message 163: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Please use anything you can Alicia.

I've now finished all the books I had listed. I'm going to do my best to finish The Paris Apartment in time, but I'm not that far in.

message 164: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments Chana Masala only has 1 S so I moved the extra S to the next meal
:-)

message 165: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments I got a C from Nightmare to finish it for you (Keely I think) and I'll finish my book and audiobook tomorrow so I went ahead and added them in case I get home from work late tomorrow. (And used up their letter count)

I noticed Tuna is one of the words we can use for extra points in Round 2. Did anyone else see that part in the restaurant rules? And what the other words are?

message 166: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments Melissa, for Pastry in meal 97, can you use the Y character from Crown of Midnight, Please. Or tell me who the Y character is, and I'll make the change.

You used Archer Finn in tea #27 and fish #80 (sorry I only noticed bc I was trying to find what letter to trade for the Y). You can only use a character as first or last name one time. So I fixed that and using the Y will use your missing letter from there

Thank you

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments From what I understand, the bonus word thing depends on our ranking for our restaurant name and description so we won't find out what we are looking for for a few more days until they announce the ranking. I may have some of that information wrong though, I haven't looked at that since they announced the voting.

message 168: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments Yeah I think Keely is right about the extra word points being dependent on ranking Tuna is in the lowest ranking groups. We will just have to wait and find out :)

message 169: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Well, it looks like we came second to last so we are going to be looking for Tuna for extra points as well as Capers and Anchovies. I'm not sure about the latter two but hopefully Tuna will be easy-ish to find.

The challenge finishes at 10pm for me and I'll be around from now so I can I check every hour or so and work on getting any last letters or words used.

message 170: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Melissa, for Rat King and Soul Surfer we haven't used anything from either. I believe the book read points get taken away if we don't use at least one item.

message 171: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments So, it looks like we aren't going to be able to feed everyone. I've filled in some of our customers. Because of our ranking it sounds like we will get more pensioners at the end of next round so I used up those, although I'm not sure what happens to the "still hungry" people. I thought they just hang around, but maybe they just leave hungry. I have asked the question in the questions thread.

If it is the case that they hang around, maybe we want to keep an even spread of the other groups waiting? If they just leave hungry then I guess it doesn't really matter who we feed as all our food will be gone.

message 172: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Curses!
I didn't quite finish my book.
Sorry for all the errors. I'll go fix now.

message 173: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I'm not sure, but my King Rat is not working - it comes up with #ref for the scavenger part. Any thoughts?

message 174: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Same with Soul Surfer. ....
Hmmm......

message 175: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Ooof. Did I totally miss the deadline on these?
So sorry if I did teammates.
I'll be better next round, I promise.
First month of school has gotten me crazy with work.

message 176: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Not to worry Melissa, these things happen.

I think we did really well considering we are 2 members less than we expected and most of us were busier than we anticipated.

I should be able to read more this round, both in terms of the length and amount of books. I'll try and stick to books that are around the 500 page for maximum words/letters, but may do a few shorter ones.

message 177: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments No Melissa, it got weird at around meal 90, it was doing it to me last night. I will fix it for you

All fixed

message 178: by Melissa (last edited Oct 01, 2022 03:58AM) (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Thanks Alicia!
Oof- it looks like I need to go right to round two.
I have a new strategy.
I'm going to put my books in first and plunk words in the comments as I go along.

message 179: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments That is kind of what I do. Or add the words at the end if it is a shorter book. Before I was using small bits of paper to write down what I found and I was worried about losing the papers. I went a brought I notebook (even though I have many somewhere but they are all in boxes waiting to be unpacked when I get home) so I'm not as worried about losing the words anymore.

message 180: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments So, my question about the remaining customers was answered. They leave upset we didn't feed them. So it looks like it doesnt matter who gets fed as long as we use up all the meals. I believe only two teams managed to get more than 160 meals which means we are definitely not the only ones who didn't feed all their customers.

message 181: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Okay, I finished my first book - I just need some onions or potatoes, or salt for the curry. My sandwich is pretty open.

I'll be reading more today :)

message 182: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I found potatoes in the book I'm reading now so I'll add them :)

message 183: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Keely wrote: "That is kind of what I do. Or add the words at the end if it is a shorter book. Before I was using small bits of paper to write down what I found and I was worried about losing the papers. I went a..."

One can never have too many notebooks :)

message 184: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments This is true, but I need to get better at using the ones I have already :P

I will try and get my book done today, if not it will be tomorrow. My boyfriend and I are on different sleep patterns at the moment where he doesn't come to bed until several hours after I go to bed. Which is actually working out well because it means I get to read before I go to sleep and then I have several hours before he wakes up to get some reading done.

message 185: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments According to the Rules for round 2 "up to 8 scavenger words/ spell-it out letters per book >301 pages and <=500 pages" but the read spreadsheet is showing 10. I think there might be a mistake

message 186: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Aha! I guess we better get that cleared up

message 187: by Heather (last edited Oct 01, 2022 08:10AM) (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments Someone else has already pointed it out in the question section, if it still is only 8 we are allowed we have to lose 2 of Melissa's scavenger words :(

message 188: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Okay, I'll keep my eyes open - we could get rid of the sandwich items.

message 189: by Keely (last edited Oct 01, 2022 10:47AM) (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I saw cheese in my book so I could replace yours and then we only need to find bread somewhere and we'd be back where we were if there is a mistake with the spreadsheet formula.

message 190: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments bread has already been mentioned twice in the book I am reading, so we have a possible replacement for that also.

message 191: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Nice.
I took my two sandwich items off, and I think you could probably plunk yours in there if they work well there.

message 192: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I just started a bunch of meals.... Add to them as you'd like!
I like that bacon cheese pickle thing :) It's a real thing! I was thinking maybe looking for a different type of cheese, and maybe, I'm not sure what else? Onion?

message 193: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments It's sounding like it could be some sort of cheese ploughman's sandwich so onion would fit in well. Maybe some lettuce if we find any.
I am talking as someone who doesn't like cheese so I'm only going off of what I've seen on menus. Would ham work? Make it a cheese and ham ploughman's sandwich? If we find it of course.

message 194: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Cool. I've never heard of a poughman's sandwich. I'm going to have to look this up!

message 195: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Melissa wrote: "Cool. I've never heard of a ploughman's sandwich. I'm going to have to look this up!"

message 196: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Yum!

message 197: by Keely (last edited Oct 02, 2022 01:39PM) (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments It's not normally served as a sandwich. More like a deconstructed sandwich I guess. But I have seen sandwich versions. A ploughman's is usually served as a lunch. I guess it's a British thing. If you took away the cheese and replaced it with some sort of meat, I'd be all over it :P

After looking it up, we could add ham, onion, egg, any salad-y item (lettuce, tomato, cucumber) or even apple.

message 198: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments I added "salad" and "apples". Also, I started another pasta as I found "anchovy" in my book, it is one of our look at the crowds words :)

message 199: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I found Tuna in one of mine! I'll add to the spreadsheet in a bit

message 200: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Erm, I may have also started a couple more meals. But if we get them all finished soon, we'd be up to 14 meals, which sounds really good to me considering we are only on day 3.
