Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments I went back and looked at the questions in the test kitchen. So to answer my own question, haha, everyone just remember that whatever meal you chose, for example tea, you have to use the minimum items. In teas cage, 2. So you have to have tea and water. Or water and lemon. Or water and ice. One on each line. I haven’t been able to figure out a meal yet to show an example.
Their example was sandwich with a minimum of 4, but the spreadsheet says 7, so not sure which is wrong.

But we all stumbled getting going last year too. We don’t want blanks on lines like 4 and 5 because of the way it calculates. We also have to carry the finished meal over the Shop Front where I’ll put an example with Keely’s tea but you can always change my description Keely. (Just doing it as an example)

Maybe Melissa has last years spreadsheet she can screenshot us to see. I didn’t save mine

And each meal is the next consecutive number.

Thanks.

I left the lines free so that it was easier to see where the meals break it up easier so if we needed to complete them it was easy to see. I had planned to join my tea with Keely's water. I saw on a sheet from last year the free line. Why can we not do that? I am not sure what you mean by how it calculates.

message 54: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments it calculates the number of items you use by how many have that meal number so it should be fine to leave at least 1 blank line. Between each meal, we are making.

message 55: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments The spreadsheet has calculations all over it, tied together from tab to tab. Like right now, in Shop Front there are errors but I think it is because those meals are not complete in the meals created. Melissa may know that for sure.

I don't remember last year, that all those meals having that high of minimums. Like 10 items in the curry, that's crazy.

message 56: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments Once upon a time, in the old school Goodreads, you could get the location and the characters listed in the book on the page with the book's description. Anyone know where that's hiding now?

message 57: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments In my experience, not all books have characters listed on the book page, but if they've changed/moved/deleted it then that's annoying. I'm on my phone right now so I can't have a look for you. I remember getting emails about a few changes they were going to do from the 1st September, but I dont remember seeing those changes on it.

I added my words for The Water Babies and what I have found in Vanity Fair so far. I'm glad to have found things like onion, pepper and chilli in Vanity Fair. They will be very useful in some dishes. Feel free to use whatever you see for any meals you want to create.
At the moment I'm more focused on just finding food/drink items in my books and also trying to find time to actually read.

message 58: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Oh yeah, in The Water Babies, I found 'sea-apples', 'sea-oranges' and 'apple-orchard'. Does anyone know if we can use just the word apple or orange in this case or because they are hyphenated they count as one word? I put them separately for now in case we can't use them. I meant to check the rules and Q&A for an answer while I was on my laptop but ran out of time.

message 59: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I think they have to be separate.

message 60: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I have the old spreadsheet. I'll see if I can figure out how to put a screenshot on here!

message 61: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Here's the link to last year's spreadsheet. I think you all can see it?
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

message 62: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Okay, one change we should make to the spreadsheet is where it says "word being spelled or scavenged," that should be the word itself, like venison. Then the next column, just write text or title.

I fixed some of them.

message 63: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Yes, for tea, you need water - I think that's why there's an error?

message 64: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Hmmm... I tried to fix the coffee one, but there is still an error. I'll check in with mods.

message 65: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments I just fixed the error, Melissa.

@Alicia: Leaving space should not affect the calculation from the kitchen to the store as long as that row doesn't have a meal number. The way it calculates the number of items is that it searches listed under the meal number. And the way it looks for who can be given it is very similar, it searches for the same meal number but draws data from a different column.

Heather Milne | 479 comments How was everyone's weekend? :)

message 67: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Sweet!
My weekend has been good! Thanks :) It's Labor Day weekend here in the US, so we have an extra day today - hooray! I got out hiking a bit, and now I'm buckling down to do school work. How was yours?

message 68: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I was going to give curry a try. Can I use the cinnamon in my curry? I can find water for the tea :)

message 69: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments We should come up with a special too! Something dinery - bookish

message 70: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments I do have escargot.... not really a diner food :)

message 71: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments When a meal is finished, be sure to write yes in the column :) I'm trying to figure if I can add to meals or take for my meal :)

message 72: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I found a lot of different fish in The Water Babies. I'm not the biggest fan of fish so I don't really know any special fish dishes.

The Accident doesn't look like it's going to have much food in it so might be better to use for spell-it-outs. I've only come across "water" in the book, but I still have quite a bit left so maybe some more food will appear. It's a short-ish book so hopefully I will finish it today.

Mine was good. :) I watched F1 and it was my birthday so that was fun.

message 74: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Happy late birthday, Heather! I hope you had a nice day :)

My weekend was busy. We went to our new house to do some bits and pieces on Saturday. It was a long day, but worth it. And Sunday we did a bit of food shopping and then just chilled.

I haven't been able to do as much reading as I hoped because things have been so busy, but I promise to make up for it in the later half of the month when things should calm down a bit.

message 75: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments Yep, errors are gone. Thank you.

But….curry has to have 10 items. Yes we can all put items into it, but you want to have all 10 lines together for it. Or at least, it is easier to “read” if the whole meal is together. (I think that’s nuts since most books read only have 4 to 8 items attached to it.)

If anyone has a spare lemon, I am not finding a lot of food in my books. Eesh

message 76: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments I am not trying to be a pest, really 😀

So on the Menu items, the min number is what has to be used. Curry and sandwich were not 10 last time (I see we didn’t do it last year).

message 77: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments @Heather, lol. One of the people that didn’t join this time had us all in line. I thought those things had to be that way.

message 78: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ellsworth (sanukipityreads) | 66 comments So I finished up the sandwich and the curry (you had used up the Woods book, so I hope that was ok). If anyone comes across a lemon, can you please add it to the Fish n Chips in meal 4. I bet there was one in Arctic Wild but it was an audiobook so I couldn't go back and look.

message 79: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments I think I have a lemon in one of the books I am currently reading and about to finish. I will look this afternoon.

message 80: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I found Vinegar in Scars if we want to do another fish and chips with vinegar. I don't know if there is any benefit to us doing another one of those. There was plenty of fish types mentioned in The Water Babies that it could be a different fish from the one already done.
I'll be honest, I'm still a bit confused about how the meals work.

message 81: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments I have spotted an issue with meal 9 I think. Different meals require books with different page counts and desserts, drinks and cocktails require a minimum of books with 500 pages, both the books used for the scavenger are lower than that.

Yes, I think it will be confusing for a while. With games like this, I'm always thinking there needs to be a balance. And high points too :)

That totally makes sense. I inserted some lines around some of my meals to add ingredients. How does that look? Do you think it works?

Good catch!

message 86: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments For lines 58 and 60 - are we looking for a pepper and an onion?
I could switch something from my last book - as I didn't use the peppers that were mentioned.

message 87: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments pepper as in salt and pepper

message 88: by Heather (new)

Heather Milne | 479 comments I can change ten to Outlander, there was fruitcake mentioned in that.

message 89: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments I'm planning to read some longer books in the later half of this month when I should have more time. I've been reading some shorter books so I could say I've read some things.
I should also work on Vanity Fair but I haven't really been in the mood for it. I've been after things with a bit more excitement. I will try and finish it soon though.

That is fair, how is moving going? :)

By the way, thanks for wishing me a belated happy birthday.

message 91: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments We hope to be actually able to move in next weekend. There will still be some finishing touches from the builders and then it will just be decorating which we will do ourselves and unpacking.
I'm hoping once we are there I will have more time to read mostly because we won't have to travel around as much. It will be nice to finally be able to relax a bit.

I hope everyone has a good weekend!

Camilla | 1885 comments I am so sorry, but I need to withdraw from the game. I am just not currently able to read almost at all, I've finished only one book so far in September and that one I'd started in August. This has never happened to me and I've never had to withdraw from a team challenge before and I feel awful, but it's not fair that I'm part of the team when I'm not able to participate. I am truly sorry.

No hard feelings Camilla! Be well. Hope to see you in another challenge in the future :)

message 94: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Alright teammates! Don't worry about overreading! Lol! I'm starting to pick up in my reading again. I'm not sure I'll get to 20 books a month, but you know, one can have goals :) I went to a town book sale yesterday. 50 cents a book! I got 20 :) There's September :) I am wanting to read a classic along the way too. I'm thinking of Wuthering Heights.

Melissa | 1895 comments Heather wrote: "I can change ten to Outlander, there was fruitcake mentioned in that."

I love that you found a fruitcake in Outlander. While reading that at any other time, the fruitcake would go unnoticed ...

message 96: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 1813 comments Don't worry about it Camilla, just look after yourself!

I'm currently reading at least 4 different books (in different formats/devices). One is set in a bistro and at 14% has already had so many food references and I hope there will be many more.

I dont think I will over-read this month. The only way I would get anywhere near 20 is if I read a load of short books which I don't really want to do. As I have said, I should have more time towards the end of this month and I'll mostly try to keep to mid-length books. 2 I am currently reading are about 500 so that will be lots of options for us.

message 97: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1895 comments Excellent!
Yeah, I’m not worried:) I like playing the game :) It’s fun to look for food while reading:)

Heather Milne | 479 comments I am currently reading the practical magic books and will probably finish them this week then I am thinking about reading the next three books in the Outlander series which are all over 500 pages, I will look for drinks and desserts in them.
