2022 July Pick-It-for-Me Challenge

Pickees
✱ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e., secret baby).
✱ Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.
Pickers
✱ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.
✱ You will be using 8 picking rules to select books for you pickee. Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author’s work previously. The remaining 4 titles should come from your pickee’s tbr, with a minimum of one from their preferred shelves if provided. Be sure to pick at least one book for each picking rule, but please limit your picks to no more than two books per rule as sometimes having too many options is worse than too few.
✱ Please remember when you are giving new recommendations, you are not limited to titles that you have read. You can choose books that are new releases, on your tbr, or titles you looked up on Goodreads or Amazon that you think your pickee would enjoy.
A Few Hints to Help with Book Selection
✱Check the book’s publishing date. Select “date pub” from the checkbox selections and save.
✱ Check pickee’s personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., ‘to read next,’ ‘favorites,’ ‘didn’t like’)
✱ Make sure the books you choose are not on their ‘read’ shelf. Just because it isn’t rated doesn’t mean it wasn’t read.
✱ Look at your pickee’s ‘read’ shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✱ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.), contact the Mods or the month’s organizer for guidance.
✱ Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their ‘to-read’ shelf, an older book on their ‘to-read’ shelf). This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine the date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.
If you want to volunteer to make repicks:
✱ We love that you want to help out, but please remember those who need picks have been waiting for a long time already. Please only volunteer if you are able to make the repicks within a few hours of the deadline. Thank you!

In America, the July 4th holiday weekend is often a big money maker for Hollywood. Some of the year’s highest-grossing movies often release during this weekend. The following rules are based on some of my favorite films that were released over this holiday with most being the highest grossing films for the summer or year of release.
🎬 Back to the Future—July 3, 1985 – $388 million gross worldwide
Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover
This mid-80’s romp to the past and back remains a beloved favorite. Marty McFly (Fox) accidently travels back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean that his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown (Lloyd) built. While adjusting to life 30 years prior, Marty inadvertently prevents his parents’ meeting, which threatens his very existence. Though not considered as popular, this film was followed by two sequels in 1989 and 1990.
recommend a book…
✔️ set in the future or past
✔️ tagged sci-fi or with a main character who is a scientist
✔️ that is part of a trilogy
🎬 Adventures in Babysitting—July 3, 1987 – $34 million gross worldwide
Elisabeth Shue, Keith Coogan, Anthony Rapp, Mia Brewton
Babysitting the Anderson’s kids is not Chris Parker’s (Shue) idea of a fun night when her boyfriend cancels their anniversary date. But things get interesting when a frantic call from her best friend pushes Chris to head into downtown Chicago towing her two charges and one of their best friends. Note that this was Chris Columbus’ directorial debut—he would go on to direct other blockbuster movies such as Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and the first two installments in the Harry Potter franchise.
recommend a book…
✔️ set in Chicago or a Chicago suburb
✔️ that includes a quest or series of challenges the main character has to face/conquer
✔️ that is first in a series or the first published by an author
🎬 Terminator 2: Judgment Day—July 3, 1991 – $520 million gross worldwide
Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Robert Patrick, Edward Furlong
The sequel to the 1984 film—The Terminator—begins in 1995 where a teenage John Connor (Furlong) is being hunted by an advanced version of the Terminator (Patrick). The 2029 resistance, led by John, sends a less advanced, reprogrammed Terminator (Schwarzenegger) to protect his younger self. After helping his mom escape a psychiatric hospital, the team goes on to destroy what would become the artificial intelligence—Skynet—that destroyed the world.
recommend a book…
✔️ that features a character who is being hunted
✔️ that features a character with mental health issues
✔️ that features a protective alpha male
🎬 A League of Their Own—July 1, 1992 – $132 million gross worldwide
Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty
This film tells a fictionalized version of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. With World War II threatening to shut down major league baseball, a women’s league was born. Dottie (Davis) doesn’t initially want to participate, but agrees so her sister, Kit (Petty), can play. Dottie and Kit become part of the Rockford Peaches, while other teams formed include the Racine Belles, Kenosha Comets, and South Bend Blue Sox. The story goes on to highlight the Peaches ups and downs, including the climatic World Series game that pits the two sisters against each other since Kit was traded to the Belles. Told as a flashback, the film ends with the two sisters meeting up at the newly opened exhibit featuring the all girls’ baseball league at the Baseball Hall of Fame.
recommend a book…
✔️ that features sisters and/or close-knit female friends

✔️ that is told in or includes flashbacks
🎬 Independence Day—July 3, 1996 – $817 million gross worldwide
Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell, Judd Hirsh, Margaret Collin, Randy Quaid
On July 2, 1996, an extraterrestrial mothership enters Earth’s orbit and deploys numerous saucers over major cities worldwide—so begins 1996’s highest-grossing film. This film follows numerous storylines that eventually intersect. U.S. Marine Captain Steven Hiller (Smith) returns to his unit to help combat the invasion. While in New York David Levinson, an MIT–trained satellite technician, decodes an embedded signal transmitting from the mothership. After determining that the decoded signal is actually a countdown, David and his father (Hirsh) travel to Washington, D.C., to share the news with David’s ex-wife and the White House Communications Director (Collin). David, his father, his ex-wife, the President (Pullman), and others escape the large-scale alien attack. All the main characters end up at Area 51 where a worldwide counter offensive is relayed via morse code.

✔️ a second-chance romance
✔️ tagged military or war
✔️ that features a cobbled-together group
🎬 Armageddon—July 1, 1998 – $553 million gross worldwide
Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler, Ben Affleck
This high-action film follows a group of blue-collar deep-core drillers who are asked by NASA to stop a global-killing asteroid that is on a collision course with Earth. Harry Stamper (Willis) leads his team of roughnecks into space to save the world. In addition, Harry must acknowledge and accept that his daughter, Grace (Tyler), is in love with and wants to share her life with Harry’s protégé, A.J. (Affleck). Along the way mounting challenges make saving the world nearly impossible.

🎬 Transformers—July 3, 2007 – $709 million gross worldwide
Shia LeBeouf, Tyrese Gibson, Josh Dunhamel, Anthony Anderson, Megan Fox, John Turturro, Jon Voight
The 1980’s animation focusing on the war between the Autobots and Decepticons came to life in 2007. Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) inadvertently becomes part of the war when he buys a 1976 Chevrolet Camaro who turns out to be Bumblebee—a shapeshifting alien. Both factions are after the All Spark—the source of life for the Autobots. The battle between the Autobots and Decepticons ends with the destruction of Megatron and the All Spark. Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots, accepts that his home world cannot be rebuilt and communicates to other Autobots throughout the universe to their new home on Earth.
recommend a book…
✔️ with a cartoonish cover
✔️ with a primarily yellow/orange cover (Bumblebee’s color)

🎬 Spider-Man: Far From Home—July 2, 2019 – $1.132 billion gross worldwide
Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jon Favreau, Marisa Tomei, Samuel L. Jackson, Jake Gyllenhaal, J.B. Smoove, Jacob Batalon
Peter Parker (Holland) and his classmates embark on a two-week school trip that takes them to Europe. In Venice, Italy, a water elemental attacks and Peter rushes to protect his classmates. Quinten Beck (Gyllenhaal), a super-powered individual, arrives to defeat the elemental and befriends Peter. After the defeat of the elemental, Nick Fury (Jackson) asks Peter to join the fight to defeat the last elemental. Peter declines choosing to return to his friends and class trip. However, Fury doesn’t take “no” for an answer and hijacks the class trip, sending them to Prague. The final battle takes Peter to London where he battles all the elementals, which are actually an elaborate illusion. This is the highest grossing film listed and the 23rd installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I am looking forward to Fire Island (Hulu), Thor: Love and Thunder, and maybe Elvis.
PIFM shelf- https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

But when they come to streaming, I am most interested in Thor and Lightyear. We watched all the Marvel movies early in COVID, so continuing that is kind of a no brainer. And my love of all things Disney is pretty well known, so of course I want to see what Lightyear is all about.
Please use my to-read-asap shelf - thanks!

Hubby and I already went to see Top Gun: Maverick which was sweetly nostalgic and had awesome flight scenes. But I'm really looking forward to Thor: Love and Thunder!!

🎬 A League of Their Own
TBR: Scoring With Him (sports – baseball!) Gee, was this planned a little? LOL
NEW: Meg and Jo (sisters!) Little Women with a modern take! Loved this one and need to finish the series with Beth & Amy!

🎬 Independence Day
TBR: The Friendship Pact (military/second chance)
NEW: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (cobbled together group/second chance) Wonderfully written and fun! Very old Hollywood! Evelyn was a little bit Katherine Hepburn, a little bit Liz Taylor and a little bit Betty White with a flair that was uniquely her own!

🎬 Armageddon
TBR: Blood Fury (red, white, blue on cover)
NEW: The Great Alone (blue collar/forbidden love) Another I had been meaning to read and was recommended last month in PIFM. Totally worth the read and another home run from the author!

🎬 Transformers
TBR: Alec Mackenzie's Art of Seduction (orange/yellow cover, looking for something)
NEW: Riptide (Orange/yellow cover) I just read this last month on a recommendation from this very challenge and really loved it!

🎬 Spider-Man: Far From Home
TBR: Kindred in Death (long-running series) That was a no-brainer! LOL
NEW: The Perils of Pleasure (Europe/long series) Enjoyed nearly this whole series, especially this one!

What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?
The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.
The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.
You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!
After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.
In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations. PLEASE NOTE: If you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)
Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!
Repicks
You can ask for repicks if:
✱ The books picked for you are not yet released
✱ If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf
✱ If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf
You may NOT ask for repicks because:
✱ A book is not available at your library
✱ A genre or author you don’t enjoy was chosen
INFORMATION NEEDED TO SIGN UP
Please sign up in this thread with the answer to the following question:
✱✱ What summer 2022 movie(s) are you looking forward to seeing? ✱✱
✱✱ If you have a preferred shelf, please list it along with your pick! ✱✱
IMPORTANT DATES
Sign ups will remain open until June 24 (4 pm US CDT)
You’ll have until June 29 (~4 pm US CDT) to make your recommendations.
Please do not start reading your book(s) until the first of the month. You then have the entire month to read your pick(s) and give some feedback.
If you’re new please read the PIFM Guidelines and FAQ . If you have any questions that are not addressed there, please feel free to ask!
✱Please note that late sign ups will be included at the host’s discretion and no one will be included after re-picks are assigned!✱
