Julia | 957 comments Don, the sex in Karen Memory was all off stage. The main character falls in love and holds hands with her sweetie, but the main plot was getting rid of the villain, not a love story. Did you see that one of the featured characters in the book Marshall Bass Reeves had someone telling his story on "Drunk History" this week on Comedy Channel?

I liked it a lot, you didn't. It's why there are lots of books in the bookstore/ library/ Kindle.

Just started Moxyland with The Aeronaut's Windlass on deck.

message 804: by Julia (last edited Oct 14, 2015 02:22PM) (new)

Julia | 957 comments I also just picked up The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher, but before I begin it, I'm going to finish Movie Speak: How to Talk Like You Belong on a Film Set by Tony Bill.

I read Moxyland this summer and liked it a lot.

message 805: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Julia, you are so right about the book store. the tidbit you mentioned about Bass Reeves was very cool also. didn't know he was a historical larger than life character.

Kim | 1499 comments I've finally started on Abaddon's Gate. Liking this series.

I have this novel and I've had it for a while glad to know its good. I'll have to put it on my TBR challenge for 2016. :)

Björn (vacuum_flower) | 7 comments Just finished Robert Reed's "Marrow" and now I've begun reading Tom Toner's "The Promise of the Child"- finally:)

message 813: by Papaphilly (new)

Papaphilly Just finished Flashback and it was truly magnificent. I am now reading The Dead Won't Die and it is my guilty pleasure.

message 814: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments I finished listening to The Traitor Baru Cormorant. I thought it was alright. Full Review.

message 815: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments I'm reading The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher, while I'm enjoying it so far, it's a behemoth at 630 pages.

Yesterday I read It's a Hard Life, It's a Good Life by Meta Watts about twelve dairy farmers in my county and their lives, which is brand new and apparently not on Goodreads yet.

message 816: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments Finished Abaddon's Gate and am going to read a couple more books before I start Cibola Burn. So I've started The Traitor Baru Cormorant.

Papaphilly Just finished The Dead Won't Die and enjoyed it. Not sure what I am going to read next. I will figure it out by tomorrow's train ride to work.

message 819: by J.L. (new)

J.L. Louw | 3 comments Recently I finished Geomancer by Ian Irvine. A really, really good read.

I already delved a bit into The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Tales, and I also want to crack open Inferno before the end of the year.

So many good books, so little time.

message 820: by Glen (new)

Glen D'souza | 7 comments read my first Terry Pratchett novel " getting postal " this year.

Now I'm continuing my Halloween read with Skeleton Crew.

message 822: by Murkypoke (last edited Oct 22, 2015 02:40AM) (new)

Murkypoke | 28 comments I just had the unfortunate (or actually fortunate depending on how you look at it: see my review for more on the complexities of that idea) experience of headbutting a wall while stabbing my ear with an ice pick force reading my way through THE WORST BOOK EVER WRITTEN: The Relic Guild by Edward Cox.

My review:

message 823: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments After way more time than I expected, I finally finished Pyramids. It's good, but not as good as most of the previous Discworld books that I've read. (My Review)

I finally finished You're Never Weird on the Internet and really loved it. If not for Felicia Day, you'd likely not be reading this post. Her work has had such a positive effect on my life, including introducing me to goodreads. (My Review)

I also read Lumberjanes, Vol. 2, which I enjoyed more than the first volume. (My Review)

message 824: by Don (new)

Don Dunham I've tried Jim Butcher's Dresden stuff and thought it was overrated. somebody in this group turned me onto the "Felix Castor" books in the same ilk as dresden but better written. I'm hoping that "the aeronauts wind lass" is better... any thoughts ?

message 825: by Papaphilly (new)

Papaphilly Just finished Article 5. Good YA as long as you keep it mind.

I have said this before, but I thought Dresden Files book 1 is very bland, and book 2 is just outright bad. The series picks up eventually and gets really good, but the early books have serious problems.

His fantasy series(Codex Alera) he did the first book was solid pretty good, and the series got a little bit better and peaked in book 4-5 of 6.

Aeronauts Windlass I thoroughly enjoyed it was certainly his strongest opening book, the only issue I had with it, was it was very much a first book in a series, and it wouldn't really work standalone at all.

message 827: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Says thanks Aaron ! I do agree that prolific authors often do get better with experience.
Papaphilly, finished flashback and loved it.
I am always getting material from this site, thank you all.

message 828: by Maarit (last edited Oct 26, 2015 08:27AM) (new)

Maarit | 136 comments I finished Uhka avaruudesta (Rendezvous with Rama) and liked it.

I started to read Maailma, vihreä metsä (The Word for World is Forest) and I really hope it's better than the other Hainish cycle books I've read so far in the exception of The Left Hand of Darkness which I liked a lot. The other two I've read from the series were just plain boring and bit too similar in my mind.

message 829: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments I'm struggling to finish The Traitor Baru Cormorant. It's just really dull but I'm so close to the end I just have to finish it.

message 830: by Sumant (new)

Sumant Don wrote: "I've tried Jim Butcher's Dresden stuff and thought it was overrated. somebody in this group turned me onto the "Felix Castor" books in the same ilk as dresden but better written. I'm hoping that "t..."

Dresden files get better as you keep reading and it hits a stride after book 6.

message 831: by Papaphilly (new)

Papaphilly Kim wrote: "I'm struggling to finish The Traitor Baru Cormorant. It's just really dull but I'm so close to the end I just have to finish it."

This must be one of those books that you either love or hate. It is garnering tons of opinions, so it seems to be a book not to ignore. I have not personally read it and did not want to at first, but now I am intrigued from the conversations about it.

message 832: by Papaphilly (new)

Papaphilly I am not reading The Girl with All the Gifts. I am about 85 pages into it and it seems it is either going to be a classic or bizarrely terrible. I am not sure yet.

message 833: by Don (new)

Don Dunham "the girl with all the gifts" a classic I think. certainly a good'un for the genre.

message 834: by Sumant (new)

Sumant Here is my review of Black prism 1st book in Lightbringer series. Did not like this book much.

message 835: by Neal (last edited Oct 31, 2015 10:51PM) (new)

Neal (infinispace) Recently finished:

2001: A Space Odyssey - I've had this for decades, and just now read it. Great read, even if you've seen the movie umpteen times. Excellent insight to what's going on underneath Kubrick's visuals. 5/5

InterWorld - a fair to midland YA book co-authored by Neil Gaiman. Story of a boy caught up in a war through and between dimensions between forces of science and magic. Turns out it's a trilogy, but probably not compelling enough for me to continue. 3/5

message 836: by Ryan (last edited Nov 01, 2015 12:40AM) (new)

Ryan I just finished Zelazny's Lord of Light. Five stars.

message 837: by Byl (new)

Byl (byls) | 17 comments Just wrapped up Connie Willis's two-book novel Blackout/All Clear. Impeccable research but very busy given its length and a little difficult to keep everything and everyone straight what with the jumping around in time. Entertaining enough but mildly exhausting to finish. I'm not sorry I read it but wish it had really been one five-hundred page book instead of two really lengthy half-novels totaling nearly 1200 pages To be clear the two books are really a single novel instead of Book 1 and Book 2 of a series.

Shares a universe with To Say Nothing of the Dog which is delightful in every way.

message 838: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments I finished listening to Mountain of Black Glass and enjoyed it more than the previous entry. (My Review)

message 839: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments Byl,

The Connie Willis time travel novels also include Doomsday Book. The time periods they travel to are different, but some of the characters and the situation are the same.

message 840: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments Just finished You're Not Doing It Right: Tales of Marriage, Sex, Death, and Other Humiliations by Michael Ian Black and now reading When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris.

Taking a little break from sci-fi and fantasy to read a couple books others have given me. I'm not really a Sedaris fan but I'll try.

Chris | 1130 comments Byl wrote: "Just wrapped up Connie Willis's two-book novel Blackout/All Clear."
I came to the same conclusions. I think that Willis needed a better editor to encourage her to make everything tighter. My only other experience with her was the short story "The Last of the Winnebagos," which I loved. I was afraid that maybe Willis just doesn't have the knack for the longer form, but your recommendation of To Say Nothing of the Dog gives me hope.

Doomsday Book was the first of hers that I ever read and I still think it was the best. Her later books do tend to jump around and be over full of characters.

message 844: by Sumant (new)

message 847: by Beachesnbooks (new)

Beachesnbooks Almost done with The Girl with All the Gifts, which for me has been a struggle to get through. I'm also reading Northanger Abbey and The Heart Goes Last and really enjoying both of those.

I’ve been reading the First Law books myself over the past several weeks. I loved the trilogy. I was slightly less enthusiastic about the first two standalones set after the trilogy, but I’m halfway through the third standalone now (Red Country) and I’m enjoying it as much as I enjoyed the trilogy.
