I believe Saint Odd is the last in the series too. I thought Odd was an excellent character but as you say the books were a bit all over the place in quality:)

M.L. | 947 comments I enjoyed Lagoon, wonderful writing voice, and will read more by Nnedi Okorafor. I felt like I'd been to Nigeria!

I finished The Dark Forest by Liu Cixin. It's bleak, but I loved it! The last book isn't out till April 2016 so have a wait but looking forward to it.

Julia | 957 comments I really, really liked Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor, too. Maybe I loved it. It's not my first Nnedi Okorafor novel, but I always look forward to her books.

message 708: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments I thought The Stand was going to win the poll for October so I got a start on that (it still might, it's tied now), I've also started Libriomancer for something a bit lighter, and last week I read Truckers: The First Book of the Nomes for a bit of Pratchett I've never gotten around to.

Papaphilly Just Started Apocalypse Wow. I have read 230 pages in one sitting.

message 711: by Beachesnbooks (new)

Beachesnbooks Still reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and really loving it so far. Very weird and meandering, in a good way. I'm also listening to Anansi Boys--I usually love Neil Gaiman, but so far I'm having a hard time getting into this one. I hope it gets better once the story really gets going.

message 712: by Papaphilly (new)

message 713: by Gav451 (new)

Gav451 | 145 comments Stick with Anansi Boys. It does get going and I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable read. It had a lightness of touch that I was not expecting.

Esther (eshchory) | 555 comments I finished Bel Canto which was not bad but didn't thrill me.
Now I am trying a light read My Not-So-Still Life before I start The Alienist which has intrigued me for a while but required being chosen by a book club to give me that push.
After that I think I will need a scifi 'break' but I haven't decided what yet.

Sandi | 145 comments Phrynne wrote: "Just starting The Puppet Masters by Robert A. Heinlein"

I would like to know what you think when you finish. I remember liking this book a long (looong) time ago but that was a lot of books in the past. I hope to do a Heinlein reread marathon sometime in November and see how his body of work holds up now after all the stuff (good and bad) I have been reading lately.

What I have been reading lately, Scalzi's Lock In, Agent to the Stars, Dragons at Crumbling Castle: And Other Tales, 1Q84, Thirteen, etc. I hope to start Station Eleven, The Stand, and finally getting back to finishing up the Wheel of Time series. Busy, busy, busy!

Roberta (tawnyreader) | 89 comments Gav451 wrote"Stick with Anansi Boys. It does get going and I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable read. It had a lightness of touch that I was not expecting." I agree. For rereading, I actually prefer it to "American Gods".

message 739: by Julia (last edited Sep 24, 2015 02:11PM) (new)

Julia | 957 comments Yesterday I finished Browsings: A Year of Reading, Collecting, and Living with Books by Michael Dirda which are mostly short essays on book reading and collecting and other book- related activities like attending cons. I also finished rereading Blood Lite edited by Kevin J. Anderson.

Now I'm reading Days of Awe: Stories for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and Geek Theater a collection of sf/f plays edited by Erin Underwood and Jen Gunnels.

You should never underestimate the power of a page-turner.

Marcin Judas Unchained - Peter F. Hamilton
Great read so far (70% and about what , 1800 pages into this colossus of a series )

message 744: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1499 comments Finished The Stand last night, now trying to finish off In the Night Garden.

message 745: by Sandi (new)

Sandi | 145 comments I am starting The Stand (the original 800 page version), then I hope (?) to read/skim the unabridged version to compare the additions and revisions. I feel like I am O.Ding on viral apocalypse novels after reading Station Eleven Lock In. Now every time I pass a person sneezing or coughing, I break out in laughter. Seriously disturbing in a manically ridiculous kind-of way.

message 746: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Osborne | 4 comments I am currently The Black Prism (Lightbringer, #1) by Brent Weeks read so far it is an exciting fantasy with a complex premise. But it is definitely an epic fantasy. Of course I love those great big books I just wrap myself in the story.

message 747: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments I finally finished reading Magician: Apprentice. I liked it, but didn't love it. My Review.

I also finished listening to City of Golden Shadow and really enjoyed it: My Review.

I also listened to Aftermath. I thought it was alright. I don't really get why people are so angry about it. It's a so-so book. My understanding is the old Star Wars books had a lot of those. Here's My Review.

I think the dislike comes from it being the launch of the new era, the first post-ROTJ novel of the new canon, so there was a lot of hope and hype for it. If it was the third or fourth of the new books it would have been received better. For my money Lost Stars was much better.

I'm finally all caught up on group books so now I'm reading God's War. Not far in but this book is set in a strange world, in a good way.

message 749: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne I just finished listening to Unbound by Jim C. Hines Unbound (Magic Ex Libris #3) by Jim C. Hines This is a fun series!

message 750: by Beachesnbooks (new)

Beachesnbooks Glad I'm sticking with Anansi Boys--I really do feel like it's picking up a lot towards the end as everything starts tying together. I also started The Library at Mount Char, which is totally crazypants so far (in a good way...I think).
