That's what I'm doing with my teeth and I hate myself for it. It hurts. My teeth hurt. My jaw hurts. My head hurts. I'm doing it when I'm trying to fall asleep, when I wake up in the middle of the night, and all day long. Actually, I think it's keeping me from sleeping. Plus I'm not sleepy. Remember when you used to just lay down and fall asleep immediately? That was awesome.

I do that, too! My mouth is a stress barometer and that's one of the indicators. Are you stressed out, Gretchen?
I guess. I'm worried I'll develop a facial tick or something because I can't stop clenching and contorting my mouth and biting my lips, ect.
I took a sleeping pill last night and that seems to have helped. I'm not doing it today thank GOD! That was quite distracting. I couldn't concentrate.Bunny I DID try chewing gum yesterday and it helped some because I had something to clench on. But it was disturbing too because then I wanted to !!CHEWCHEWCHEWCHEW!! as fast as I could and that made me look like a lunatic.
Yes, next you'll chew your cheeks, knead your lips with your fingers, push on your teeth until they hurt, etcetera...does that make you feel better?
Hey! I WAS doing all that yesterday! It felt sooooooooo good to push on my teeth as hard as I could! And my gums too. I knead my lower lip too. I squeeze it with my thumb and middle finger, using the index finger to dent in the center (just like edging a pie crust) then I squeeze harder until the fold pops outward. over and over and over. Sarah how do you keep from going insane?Bunny, you're right. I should probably take up running.
AAHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHA! HAHAHAHHAAH! HAHHA! HAH! that's a good one.
Ugh. This thread.... I read about the teeth clenching and I empathize to the point, where I start the clenching myself. Thanks a lot!Humpf.
Can you, like, next time post about, say, kegeling. It also involves clenching but is easier on my teeth.
Gretchen wrote: "waitaminute! are you suggesting i describe..."I'm saying it's an alternative to teeth clenching... But I'm sure nobody would mind a description.
You might be onto something there, Kasia! I'm going to give it a shot. But the teeth clenching happens much more absentmindedly. Kegels, not so much.
Well there's always facial yoga. That might help. Or some retainers? I know some people sleep with the metal (?) thingy (?) in their mouth just to prevent teeth grinding. If it gets seriously bad, you might want to invest in that...
It's an oral fixation! You're diagnosed.
It's easier to deal with when I'm not currently f***ing up my life. My jaw relaxes when my morality is strengthened and/or my responsibilities are being taken care of.

Ok, enough of thins hippie, mumbo-jumbo facial yoga crap... I am going to give the guy answer: Gretchen, it is simple, you are sexually frustrated. With kids at home and assholes at work you and your hubby are neglecting one another, that is stressing you out mentally. Go home and get a different kind of facial.
I'm not complaining. Those Kegels actually worked. I didn't get much work done, but I wasn't clenching my teeth either.
Servius Sextus Heiner wrote: "Go home and get a different kind of facial. "HA! Sure, a nice calming "facial" should do the trick. Good call Servius.
You should take up smoking. And whiskey. Whiskey to calm and numb, cigarettes to redirect the oral fixation. I should be a doctor.
If only. If only I had never quit smoking I would have a lot fewer issues. But, then there's that pesky hacking up of one's lungs, possible death by cancer, crippling addiction. sigh.whiskey, check.
Gretchen, get a mouth guard to protect your teeth while you sleep. They sell them everywhere these days. No need to have a dentist fit one for $200, they are about $5 in the store.
I have TMJD, so my jaw always hurts. I'd recommend putting a hot compress around your neck/shoulders. The heat should ease the muscles, and as a result, ease the tension in the jaw.Works for me. I never go to bed without a hot compress.
Hey Gretchen, tonight I listened to a This American Life called "Scenes from a Recession" and a dentist was on talking about how incidences of cracked teeth have shot up since the recession hit due to stress-induced teeth grinding!
