The most common type would be "humanised" animals. So Watership Down and The Wind in the Willows for example. My personal favourites of that type are the Spellsinger books by Alan Dean Foster.

But it doesn't have to be animals. A Beauty & the Beast retelling complete with talking teapots would also work. Or one of the many where items like Swords are sentient and talk to people like a human would.
