Carolyn | 9836 comments #2 in Simon McCleave's new detective series based in Anglesey is just as good as the first and the characters are developing nicely. DI Laura Hart's first case back at work is twisty mystery that starts out as a murder investigation and ends up being so much more.

Carolyn | 9836 comments River of Fallen Angels (Victorian Mystery, #7) by Laura Joh Rowland River of Fallen Angels by Laura Joh Rowland is #7 in a mystery series set in Victorian London.

The main character is a crime photographer for a newspaper, her husband is a policeman and her housemates are fellow journalists so they find interesting crimes to investigate together. The mysteries are good but the historical atmosphere of Victorian London is not as strong as it could be, especially in this one.

I really enjoyed this slow burn read, it made me slow down to absorb it thoroughly.

Suz, I can't read the titles on the bookcovers. If it's too hard to link it, could you just write out the name? 😊

PattyMacDotComma | 3297 comments I've been meaning to read Kent Haruf's much-loved Plainsong for years, and I'm glad I finally did. Wonderful people on the plains of Colorado. He wrote two more, so I can see where they go.

True! I enjoy seeing the covers, but so many titles are too small or artistic to read. Even writing out the name is helpful

PattyMacDotComma | 3297 comments This short story, Sweat, is from the American South. The acclaimed Harlem Renaissance writer, Zora Neale Hurston wrote wonderful, real dialogue. Loved it.

An atmospheric gothic set in the Ozarks. Pretty interesting.

Oh hi Patty, I didn't see this. I don't normally do the name, just the cover, it's only because I'm usually rushing. It's something I can rectify (if I remember!) Thanks for bringing it to my attention

Andrea | 2163 comments Fans of Aussie Noir might enjoy The Night Whistler by AA Greg Woodland, especially for its nostalgic setting of late 60s rural Australia. But be warned there is abundant animal cruelty.

Looks like a nice light romance. Ended up an intense emotional drama. Could have worked better in the hands of a more experienced author.
