Aimee (pebbles320) I've just had a look at the shelves for A Christmas Carol and it would work for fantasy and 4-stars, which we have 5 and 4 books planned for respectively. So I personally would put it down for one of them, but obviously feel free to use it where you like Sherri.

message 106: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) Aimee wrote: "Lynn wrote: "Using the top 100 Goodreads shelves is quite inventive, IMO. It makes selecting a book quite a process!."

It does make a change. I quite like the fact that it's clear which books work and which don't, since we're all using the same lists, rather than it being subjective / open to interpretation like our usual AtY prompts. I wouldn't want every readathon to be like this, but it's a fun way of picking books towards the end of the year when I've completed my other challenges."

That is such an astute observation! I hadn't considered the fact that virtually all objectivity is removed by enforcing these criteria! It is very straightforward!

The mods needed a straightforward read-a-thon this week! 🤪 but I'm glad y'all like it! My first read-a-thon in this group (February 2018) was one very similar to this challenge and I really enjoyed it so I thought I'd resurrect it.

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments The spreadsheet worked so thank you. I put Christmas Carol under 5 star on the completion spreadsheet. Christmas Carol needs to be moved to the completed sheet.

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) Wednesday is the busiest day of the week for me so I won't have many pages read for today, but I should be able to make up for that on Friday when I have the whole day off work! 😄

Of course :) If you still want to help out the group, you can let us know how many pages you read each day so far. If you click on the spreadsheet up top you will see a page that has your name at the top and you can enter how many pages you read there, or just tell us here and we can add it for you. :)

I can't believe it either! Although, when I went out to find my chicken coop roof caved in from the ice, I was WELL aware that it is officially winter this week. The question now is, can I concentrate on an audiobook while repairing a chicken coop? I can just imagine losing an earbud out there in the snow and chicken poo. Maybe that isn't such a good idea after all 🤣

message 117: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I hope the chickens are okay? We are unseasonably warm here in northern Colorado, though I'm not really complaining because I don't like the cold. But we do need moisture so could use some snow, we're under fire warnings, which is crazy in December. A small wildfire broke out yesterday.

I'm on a reading roll, I've finished about a book a day! That will slow down some but I should finish at least 2 more during the read-a-thon, possibly 3 (with a stretch goal of 4 more!).

Yes, they are all fine, a little irritated at being confined to a smaller space maybe but physically fine. I am going out now to buy one of those tarp garages to plop over the top of the coops. That will push the netting that fell back up, That will give them more room and bonus wind block! They will love that.

I would be terrified if we went under a fire warning. Our house is surrounded by trees. I hope you get some moisture of some sort soon!

Definitely sounds as if you may want to wait for the audiobook until you're done outside with the chicken coop! Chickens are some of my least favorite animals to deal with, but I do love eating them! LOL (I am a displaced farm girl...) I hope you're able to get everything fixed up for them!

I had to laugh at that last bit. You sound just like me. I look at my list and think, "Yeah, I'll finish this one tonight and then read this one tomorrow, and...Oooohhhh, maybe I can even finish another 3 in the next two days!" I end up always wishing I had more time to read! I am impressed with your reading consistency!!!

Aimee (pebbles320) I've got some Christmas baking to do tonight (we're going to my husband's aunt's for Christmas day, and we're bringing dessert) so I'm gonna pop on a Terry Pratchett audiobook and see how many more hours I can rack up!

What did you think of Felix Ever After? I'm considering reading it in 2022.

message 131: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) Today I am working on Forever Words: The Unknown Poems for poetry and A Prayer Before Dawn: A Nightmare In Thailand for Thailand. I *should* be able to get them both done today on audio. The chicken coop is still in progress and it's Christmas eve, so cooking and cleaning need to be done. I will do my best!

message 132: by Aimee (last edited Dec 24, 2021 07:01AM) (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) Happy Christmas eve everyone!
I'm still working on Inland for "western" but it's a fairly slow-paced book and doesn't lend itself to speed reading (too many characters to keep track of!) so I probably won't finish it until tomorrow at the earliest.

Yesterday I started Hogfather on audiobook - it's become a bit of a Christmas / New Year tradition for me to re-read a Discworld sub-series - and I should be able to finish it today as I can listen while wrapping the last few Christmas presents. I was going to use it for "humour" but then I noticed "mythology" was in the top 100 list, which surprised me. We don't seem to have any other books planned for that shelf so I might use it for that, even though I wouldn't personally have shelved it as mythology.

message 133: by Nancy (last edited Dec 24, 2021 07:27AM) (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Merry Christmas Eve! What do people do for Christmas traditions, if you celebrate? When we lived near family, we did Eve with my husband's family and Day with mine. Now that we're far from everyone we still do both days but scaled down, with Eve being the fancier dinner and Day being easy. My son unfortunately has to work today, he works at a restaurant, and they close at 8, so we're delaying dinner until after he gets home and moved our traditional meals around so tonight's the easy one. Tomorrow we'll open presents whenever my lazy teenage boys get up, eat breakfast and pretty much be lazy all day!

As for books, I am halfway through Mutts and Mistletoe, and also halfway through the audio of Mistletoe Murder (I did not intentionally pick books that both have Mistletoe in the title!). I'll finish the audio today while finishing up wrapping presents and doing other things around the house, and should also have time to get some physical pages in. My husband does the cooking so I won't be too tied up in the kitchen, other than cleaning up from last night's rugulach making (and I can do my audio then). Both of those fit multiple shelves so I'll just go with whatever has the least amount of options, which is how I've been picking shelves!

I also plan to read Letters from Father Christmas, which should be a fast one, and I hope to spend Sunday doing a puzzle, so should be able to squeeze in one more short audio, for which I have planned 12 Days at Bleakly Manor. 12 Days fits for gothic so I'll put it there.

I also am reading Shiver but I am pretty sure I won't finish it in time so I may just remove it from the spreadsheet.

Aww that sounds lovely Nancy, hope your son gets off work on time so you can enjoy plenty of time together.

In the UK, the 26th is also a holiday - it's known as Boxing Day because traditionally the queen or king gives presents to the poor in lavishly-decorated boxes.
We tend to celebrate Christmas Day with one set of family members (either my side or my in-laws) and Boxing Day with the other set, and alternate each year. We keep the 24th just for us - me, my husband and our three very spoiled cats.

You definitely have a full schedule! Both reading-wise and otherwise! I think that's so neat that you-all plan around your son's schedule! Good for you! And a husband who cooks. Wow. I'm impressed. I don't do holidays. I am older and got burned out from all the holiday doings while raising my children. I purposefully get together with my children and their families during the "off-season" times when they don't have as much going on. I also ascribe to no organized religion, so that means I basically get to rest and relax during this "holiday" season! That suits me just fine since the older I get the less energy I have to spare! Great reading plans!!

Ooohhh...another feline parent!! We have 4 kitties indoors and 2 outdoors. They basically run the household! Yet another reason I am glad I feel no compunction to decorate, etc., for any holidays. I can't imagine a Christmas tree of any sort, especially with our nosiest one, Tigger. She would have everything torn up within minutes, I'm sure! LOL 😲🙄😊

message 139: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) I just finished Until We Reckon: Violence, Mass Incarceration, and a Road to Repair which was absolutely excellent and makes all kinds of sense! I was gratified to read of all the organizations committed to offering alternatives to incarceration as appropriate as well as changing the current system. I listed as "must-read" since I agree with that AND it had only 2 possibilities.

I am beginning Malibu Rising today which is a longer book, but the other two of Reid's books I've read went quickly, so I am hopeful this will be the same. I will probably use it to fulfill 4-stars or ARC. I'll also finish Eva Luna for the South America prompt. Then Waiting to Exhale for the humor prompt and Such a Fun Age for Maybe, 4-stars, or ARC. If I have any time left, I'll work on either Gold which could fulfill "paperback" or Violets Are Blue which could fulfill many prompts.

Okay, now to reading!!!

I loved it! It took me a little longer than I expected to read it, but I think that was more on me than on the book itself. This week has been unexpectedly busy (and I don't even celebrate Christmas), and I think my brain has gone back into "pandemic mode" when it comes to reading. I can't focus at all until later in the evening, at which point I can focus super well, but it leaves me with very limited time to actually read! I was hoping to catch up a bit this weekend, but I ended up being a bit swamped with work instead.
