Read-a-Thon Winter 2021: Team Penguin
Aimee wrote, that will only count if 'United Kingdom' is listed as one of the top 100 shelves. Thank You. I checked and it's shelved as Scotland. So close but no cigar.
Sherri wrote: "Aimee wrote, that will only count if 'United Kingdom' is listed as one of the top 100 shelves. Thank You. I checked and it's shelved as Scotland. So close but no cigar."Aww man! That's so annoying.
By the way, I finished Minor Mage late last night and have added it to the spreadsheet as 'horror'. Personally, I don't feel it's a horror book at all but it's in the top 100 shelves and it doesn't look like we have any other horror books planned as a group - I can always move it later if needed, as it fits a lot of shelves.I'm gonna try and work on some of the geographic ones as I have a lot of books that will work for them.
I've almost finished Solar Bones which I will probably put down for 'Europe', and I've just picked up Before the Coffee Gets Cold for 'Asia'.
Once I've finished them I will start The Passion which has been shelved as both Italy and France as it's set partially in both places.
Hey everyone, just some housekeeping -- I have swapped out "northern-hemisphere" with "food", as northern hemisphere seemed to be very, very limited in its tags. I've adjusted your spreadsheets accordingly!
Emily wrote: "Hey everyone, just some housekeeping -- I have swapped out "northern-hemisphere" with "food", as northern hemisphere seemed to be very, very limited in its tags. I've adjusted your spreadsheets acc..."Oh, interesting. Thank you Emily!
Aimee wrote: "I think this makes a lot of sense - I've added a Completed tab and started moving books over."Thanks Aimee!
Emily, two people can read the same book, right? Obviously it would have to go under different shelves but we're not limited to one person per book?

True. I did check on the two I mentioned to make sure they had been shelved as "Mexico" and "South America" respectively. Using the top 100 Goodreads shelves is quite inventive, IMO. It makes selecting a book quite a process! 😊
Nancy wrote: "Hi all, joining in late to the party but I just finished the audio book I had going so I added it to the spreadsheet Completion Sheet, plus the two others I have started to the Planning tab.Question for you all, in other read-a-thons, my team has moved books from the Planning tab to a new Completed tab. That way the counts are accurate as to how many books fit a shelf, plus it makes the Planning tab more manageable. What do you think?"
I see. You created another tab labeled "completed," yet retained all the information about each book. I'm good with that! 😀
Lynn wrote: "Using the top 100 Goodreads shelves is quite inventive, IMO. It makes selecting a book quite a process!."It does make a change. I quite like the fact that it's clear which books work and which don't, since we're all using the same lists, rather than it being subjective / open to interpretation like our usual AtY prompts. I wouldn't want every readathon to be like this, but it's a fun way of picking books towards the end of the year when I've completed my other challenges.
Lynn wrote: "I see. You created another tab labeled "completed," yet retained all the information about each book. I'm good with that!"It makes it easier to see planned reads, but means we still have all the information in case we want to move books around later. If anyone wants to tweak it though, feel free!
It is a little tedious to check every shelf for a book, but I agree that it's way less subjective this way.I have one more suggestion for the spreadsheet - I'm thinking we should highlight each shelf in the Planning tab as we complete it, to make it easier to see what shelves are still needed. As an example I highlighted the Romance row since I completed that one.

Ooh good thinking!

Correct!
Correct!
I just finished off The Word Is Murder. Unfortunately don't have time to look at the spreadsheet now since it's past midnight, but I'll try to figure out where to place it tomorrow. If someone else wants to go ahead and add it in, please feel free. I won't be able to look until tomorrow evening after work.
Good Morning Team Penguin. I wasn't getting time to read so I had an epiphany yesterday. I joined audible. I listened while I was working. I don't think I will finished the book today but definitely will tomorrow. I've followed the discussion about using the top 100 Good Reads shelves to pick books. It is inventive. It took me out of my comfort zone because I can only access these shelves on the chrome book. My other devices brings up the home page in a different format. I knew people shelved books but I have never shelved books or used shelves. It is a tedious process but for a challenge it works. I don't think I will use it after the challenge.

Fulfilling horror is brilliant! (I refuse to read "horror"!) I think the locations is one of the toughest to fulfilll. I love your plans and I have heard Before the Coffee Gets Cold recommended as an excellent read! I hope you enjoy it!

Oh, my! I read The Book of Unknown Americans yesterday and counted it for the Mexico location prompt. It was an excellent read and I would highly recommend it!

We like to listen to audiobooks when we are travelling in the car, like yesterday when we had to drive 2.5 hours to get some papers signed and 2.5 hours back home. Such a boring drive if we hadn't had a good book going. :)
@ManaWhat did you think of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency? That is one of my all-time favorite series! I hope you enjoyed it...
Lynn wrote: "@AmyWhat did you think of All Systems Red? My jaw literally dropped at the ending!"
This was a reread for me but I wanted to share it with my bf. He loved it almost as much as I did when I read it the first time :)
Lynn wrote: "I love your plans and I have heard Before the Coffee Gets Cold recommended as an excellent read! I hope you enjoy it!"Thanks Lynn - I can thoroughly recommend Before the Coffee Gets Cold, it was really beautiful and moving, but also funny at times.

I absolutely loved it! It was sooo well written and I loved the backstory that was sprinkled throughout. Unfortunately, I did find it a bit too slow paced for my liking at the moment (I was hoping for something that was more fast paced after finishing exams) but nevertheless, it was a wonderful read!
Couldn't focus at all today, so I only got 70 pages in to Felix Ever After. Hopefully I'll be able to read a lot more tomorrow.
Good Morning All, I have a question. When I finish my book today on the planning spreadsheet when I put complete does someone move my column to the completion spreadsheet? I will finish today. I have no idea what I will read next. It will be Christmas themed but not sure what. I updated my planning column on the spreadsheet. The book I'm reading is actually on the top 100 shelf as cozy. No one had marked that so I will probably use cozy as my spot.

Sherri wrote: "Amy. I haven’t finished yet. I am close but not there."No Problem, I noticed an issue with one of my listings that I need to
ask a question about so I will be back later. Whenever I see it marked completed I will move it. :)
I finished the book & marked it complete on the planning spreadsheet. I put it under cozy on the completion sheet. Would someone mind highlighting that for me? My spreadsheet skills are very limited & I don't want to mess the spreadsheet up. Thank You.
Sherri wrote: "I finished the book & marked it complete on the planning spreadsheet. I put it under cozy on the completion sheet. Would someone mind highlighting that for me? My spreadsheet skills are very limite..."Done :) Hope it was a good read!

That's great! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I will forewarn you that Smith's writing overall is very much character-driven with plot being secondary, IMO. That is what I love about his writing! 😁

Great! It is on my list for 2022.

Cool! I can see this as a series I will definitely reread on occasion. I'm ready for the third installment in 2022.
I am currently working with Emily on a book that doesn't have a genre/shelves list at all (Life After Death: A Lana Harvey, Reapers Inc. Spin-Off) but in the meantime I have a middle grade audio Lost in Space: Return to Yesterday and physical book Riot Baby that I am reading today. I am hoping to have at least two of the three ready to put on the spreadsheet before I fall asleep tonight.
I am hoping to finish reading The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother tonight. Then I'll plan to finish Until We Reckon: Violence, Mass Incarceration, and a Road to Repair and Eva Luna as soon as possible. I get the biggest thrill out of checking the Completion Sheet and seeing books added! (I think I may be easily excited! LOL)

There are 6 Murderbot stories so far, including all the novellas - the planned 2022 release is a non-Murderbot book but should still be great as Martha Wells is a brilliant writer.

I read another 128 pages of Felix Ever After today, but still not that close to finishing (hopefully tomorrow!). It's going a bit slower than I expected since I didn't start reading until later two days in a row, but loving it so far!I tried to add The Word Is Murder to the spreadsheet yesterday, but tbh I got a bit overwhelmed. I'm not great with spreadsheets in general, so hope I did it right.

Did you enjoy the book?
Good Morning, I completed A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I marked it complete on the planning spreadsheet. I haven't put it on a shelf yet because I want to ask the same question one more time. On the top 100 shelves it is marked ghost not ghost story so that means I can't use that shelf, right?
Aimee, I'm sorry. I messed up the planning spreadsheet. I don't know what I did but things aren't right.
Sherri wrote: "Aimee, I'm sorry. I messed up the planning spreadsheet. I don't know what I did but things aren't right."Haha I love that I've become the spreadsheet guru - I'm actually such a spreadsheet geek, it's so sad.
I'm not sure why lots of text has changed to white but it should be fairly easy to fix. I'm working on it now.

I think this makes a lot of sense - I've added a Completed tab and started moving books over.
