Have you read All the King's Men, the 1947 Pulitzer Prize winner by Robert Penn Warren? It's loosely based on Huey P. Long, the governor of Louisiana. It's definitely character driven.

I enjoyed reading my first Maugham although I might not be the philosophical reader his audience would be for this one. It is a book that although written in 1944 can parallel to today's world.

Nice! I was looking into reading The Odyssey too, but the newer translation by Emily R. Wilson (first English translation of The Odyssey by a woman)
