Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments Welcome to Wheel-a-thon!
Hello Everyone and welcome to Team Captain Hook and Crocodile (or as I am calling it Capt and Croc)! I don’t know about you but tonight we are watching Hook with Robin Williams at our house.

I am your captain for this year's Wheel-a-thon along with the amazing co-captain-ing of Teddie and Judy. I know I have seen most of you around on other challenges but if this is your first challenge - wheel is my favorite so you picked a great one.

I’m working this morning on adding information to the top spots on our thread. I already went through and tried to find Wheel shelves - I think I got most of them. Please check if I linked the proper one [see message below or tracking sheet as well]. If not you can PM me the link/name or just post it yourself in the thread.

I also have a tracking sheet ready for use as well. We will add our books on the tracking sheet and the captains will transfer that information over to the team sheet before the check-ins. Makes it easier on us if we are having to do some last minute spell-out wrangling and switching.

One thing new this year is an over-reading penalty. So everyone should stick fairly close to the number of books you signed up with. The penalty is on a team basis, so we can cover for each other if life gets busy and you can't read as much one round as you thought. There is no penalty on pages though so be strategic in your choices - if you think you are going to go over on the number of books - go for longer books instead!

Welcome to Team Capt and Croc, introduce yourselves below!

Judy | 4065 comments RULES

- Books must be at least 160 pages in length.

- Audio books are allowed. For page numbers, use the "default" GR book page numbers. If the "default" is a Large Print version, use the next most popular edition for page numbers. If there is no print / ebook, then the audio book must be longer than 4 hours, and page numbers will be set at 160 pages, no matter how long the audio is.

- Books with MPGs Childrens / Kids / Poetry / Play / Graphic Novel / Illustrated / Photography / Art (or which have "Illustrated" in the title or an "Illustrator" contributor in the metadata) must have at least 40,000 words (must be a verified count. sites that provide estimated word counts are not valid sources for verifying word count). ArBookFind is a great site to double check (there are also .co.uk and .com.au versions). If in doubt, ask your captain. Another rule of thumb is the audiobook version should be over 4 hours.

- Any book in any language will count, as long as it meets the criteria.

- "Re-reads" will be allowed, if it has been six months since you have read the book. This includes listening to the audio version, if you've already read the book.

- Only books read during the specified round can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked” from previous rounds to use later in the challenge

SPELL OUT RULES

Find the letters needed using the first letter in:
- book / series title (if the first word in the title/series is a definite or indefinite article you can ignore them if you prefer)
- author first/last name
- FICTION ONLY: character name. Characters must be significant to the plot. you can use first, last or nickname. Non-fiction books don't have characters.

- If listening to the audio book: audio narrator first/last name
- If you are reading a translation: translator first/last name

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments Hi all!

I'm Kate and I'm your captain for this Wheel-a-thon. Wheel is my favorite challenge so I'm excited to end an odd reading year with it!

I live just outside a small city in Oklahoma about an hour outside of Oklahoma City. I commute three days a week to OKC and then, luckily, get to work at home on the other days. I'm the program director for the Episcopal Church in Oklahoma so I spend a lot of time on the road or at events - when not in covid that is. I'm a new transplant to "rural" life as I married a farmer in May. I have a daughter and a step-son and I spend a lot of my free time these days doing the kid shuffle. Luckily all the waiting in the car means extra book time.

I generally like literary fiction, historical fiction, non-fiction (memoirs, history, cultural, theology, travel), and the occasional thriller and fantasy. Not big into Sci-Fi, horror, or straight romance but will try anything if someone recommends it!

When I am not reading or doing the kid-shuffle, you can find me in the kitchen, on the couch watching a movie with my family, or outside in the yard trying to make things grow with my black thumb.

Excited to do Wheel with you all!

Alyana | 1064 comments Hi everyone!

I'm Alyana and this is my first Wheel-a-thon. I played tower teams a few months ago and I'm excited for this one!

I live in Queens, NY. I'm a full time mom with a 7 year old kid. I'm not really an outdoorsy (is there such a word? not sure, lol) kind of person so I spend most of my time with family and my computer.

I like mysteries, psychological thrillers, YA/NA, contemporary and some romance. Not into much sci-fi. For non-fiction, memoirs are my thing.

Just like what Kate had mentioned, when I'm not reading (mostly listening though), I'm doing house chores and watching movies and tv shows with my family or by myself.

Looking forward to play with you all!

Hi Kate! I'm a movie and tv show fan too but since the pandemic, I spent most of my time listening to audiobooks. And also, I like to have a yard someday lol

message 18: by Judy (new)

Judy | 4065 comments Hi everyone!!

I'm Judy (she/her pronouns) and I'm German but currently live in Vancouver, Canada for uni. I'm in grad school and also have two jobs so I'm in some kind of hell (and participating here probably wasn't a good idea), but wheel is my favorite so I couldn't resist.

I read all over the place; a lot of YA, contemporary, romance, fantasy & sci-fi, but the class I'm TAing for is on haunted houses so I've had to expand to gothic/horror recently (which I'm honestly not really enjoying).

Looking forward to the next few weeks of reading madness!

Me as well - my tv watching really fell off a few years ago pre-pandemic and outside of a few things or the occasional binge, I basically don't have it on much. Now that I'm married again I thought we would would watch more - but we are so busy and both of our jobs are so non-regular schedules that it's hard to find a pattern. We did just start the Great British Baking show again though and are happy it's back!

Jillypenny | 193 comments Hi all!
I'm Jill. I'm a 44 yo married mother of two teenagers. I work for adults with developmental and physical delays. I live in a rural, farming area of Ontario, Canada, about 100km (an hour's drive) north of Toronto. I like sci-fi, mystery, and horror books, but I'll read just about anything! I have done Wheel before, but I can't remember which, and finished Tower earlier this year (on Judy's team, actually!). I can't wait! My shelf link is correct.
Something I noticed while re-reading the rules yesterday: they asked us to count the number of books we read in a month, but have structured the spreadsheet to show how many we read in a fortnight. Does the system figure out our numbers based on the month or fortnight? Should I worry about needing to read more books?
I already have an "I" book in mind! Thanks to those that volunteered to captain and co-captain!

Hi Jill! My husband works with adults with developmental disabilities too.

I worry also about my books we read for a month but I don't want to be overconfident if I read less than that. I think the spreadsheet is fixed with how they count our books read as a team.

message 24: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 2143 comments Hello everyone!

I'm Jackie and I live in North Carolina. I'm retired from a career in Information Technology so I have plenty of time to indulge my reading habit. I read almost anything but favorites are mystery, thrillers, fantasy, and historical fiction.

I've done Wheel before perhaps two or three times, and it's one of my favorite team challenges. Looking forward to reading with all of you!

My shelf is correct.

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments hi i'm devann. i've done wheel a few times before so looking forward to it, but i need to break out of the cycle i've been in the last month or so of mostly reading graphic novels / novellas / kid's books since most of those won't count. if anyone has any good adult horror book recommendations [i'm pretty over YA at this point] i'd love to hear them since i love to read more horror in september/october but keep striking out with basically everything i've tried so far this year.

Hey Jill, good to see you again so soon (and also hello fellow-person-in-Canada)! ;)

As far as I know, we're going to have to watch that we're not overreading based on the two week period of a round. But we're adding a tracker to the planning spreadsheet to have a better overview of whether we're overreading (or underreading).

If you're worried you might read more than you signed up for, you can either read longer books to maximize points (that's what I did two years ago for TT when we had an over-reading penalty), or you can let the team know and someone else could read less – the penalty applies to the whole team so we can balance it out in the group! (If push comes to shove, we can also just not count a book you read for the challenge.)

Hi Devann! I just finished "The Hole" by Hye-Young Pyun. It was a great, creeping horror and I loved it. "The Hunger" by Alma Katsu was an interesting retelling of the Donner party incident.

message 29: by Peg (new)

Peg | 88 comments Hi everyone!

I'm Peg and today I live in the Phoenix AZ area, but on Thursday moving toward the other coast near Augusta GA. This might give my first week a slow count, but shouldn't take me long to get back on track!

I'm retired law enforcement, an avid hiker/backpacker, love to bake, cook and read. My husband/best friend passed, so it strengthened my resolve to find more joy in all that I do. This move is just to set up a home base closer to where I can properly spoil my grandson and then travel part-time in a little Class B with my loyal pup.

I read and enjoy a variety of genres, nonfiction, fantasy and science fiction have typically been my go to, but trying to expand. Not a big fan on romance or the paranormal, but I don't completely rule them out. I'm not a huge tv/movie viewer, but the Great British Bake Off is one of my never misses!
Discworld TT was my first team challenge, so looking forward to my first wheel!

message 30: by Kate (new)

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments Yes, I second this - the only concern is over reading so if you typically read 10 books in a month, just pace yourself for the two week period to 5ish books. Life happens so there will always be people (like me!) who won't quite make their estimate and some will go over. We on the captains end will keep track too since it's a team issue rather than individual - just read how you normally read and I think we will be fine.

Welcome Peg! As a fellow widow (I lost my first husband in 2018 and got remarried in May) - this move is amazing and I am totally a fan of doing those things that bring you joy! Congrats! No worries on the reading - real life always happens. But you do need to tell us how many of boxes of books you are moving! :)

Hahahaha! Going to claim the 5th on that! I do have a cookbook collection of close to 500 books, so that can be excluded, right???

It is about finding, and often seeing right in front of you, the joy in life.

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Aloha! I'm Lauri from Hawaii & I'm excited to play! I really love historical fiction, but normally read scary stories in October. I'm involved in another big challenge with another group & are supposed to read mystery/horror/thriller for this month. Yee-haa!

I'm a married old lady with a grown son. I still work full time at the State Hospital (yes, read mental hospital.) I enjoy shopping ( gotta love Amazon), movies, music...reading is and has always been my obsession.

I look forward to getting to know you all. Please feel free to look at my five-star shelf or any other shelf. I got a lot of stuff on there...

Snezana | 339 comments Hello!

I'm Snezana from Serbia. This is my first year doing team challenges, so this is my first wheels. I like that I'll have a little taste of previous five in this round. I've done towers few months ago and I'm currently doing mythology madness in another group. So I guess I'm already an addict! xD

I can read almost everything, but my favourite genres are fantasy and historical romance. When I'm not reading, I like to draw and paint.

I hope we have lots of fun together and read some good books along the way!

Kristel | 287 comments Hi Everyone!

My name is Kristel and I'm super excited to start the challenge 'cause I have been suffering from a major reading slump and hoping that this challenge is going to help me out of it:) I think it's my 3rd time playing wheel and so I know that this challenge is going to be a fun one!

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments Good morning from Oklahoma as I watch the sun rise from my back porch!
We are all checked in - awesome job everyone, I think this is the fastest I have ever had a team do so. So we are just planning and schemeing our way into the start of the challenge. Feel free to claim some spaces over on the tracking sheet (message 6 for the link).

message 46: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Hi team! I live in Buffalo NY and work in the software industry. I read a smattering of most genres, but my fallback is generally fantasy and sci fi. A bunch of you have talked about the pandemic inducing you to consume more audiobooks, and I joined that trend as well, so I usually have an audiobook and a book book going at the same time.

I took a bit of a challenge hiatus last year, but I love them and happy to be back playing- Wobble and the Quidditch games will be forever epic - lol.

I'm travelling now, but will probably be tweaking the tracking sheet a little tomorrow evening, so don't be surprised if it looks a little different Tuesday :)

I'd like to claim the R with The Ronin's Mistress if that's okay. Could someone put me down for that?

I also found 2 Q authors at the library today AND a book with wheels on the cover! I have to see if it will work with any of this round's letters first... I will always do the BOM participation IF I can get the books from the library. I really hate ereaders...
