Hi Lauri, I sure can put your book in the spreadsheet.

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I'd also like to claim an I -- I have Glossed and Found by author India Ink...

Glossed and Found (A Bath and Body Mystery, #3) by India Ink

Could someone hook me up with that, please? Thank you!

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments Claim away! If you don’t know how to use a tracking sheet send me a PM and I can walk you through it!

I know how to use them -- I do at work all the time! My iPad is just not up to it& I can't do it at work. Much too busy & such behavior would be greatly frowned upon... 😝

I go back tomorrow after a 2-week hiatus. That is, I had a cold & the hospital rules are you must have 2 negative COVID test results, be completely symptom free and then wait an additional 72 hours. Then you need to call 24 hrs in advance to schedule a rapid test in the parking lot. Should you pass your 3rd test, they will then let you report to your department to work! Caution is great, but I think this is a bit much...

message 57: by Kate (new)

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments Two weeks away - yikes! No worries about the ipad - we were just worried about missing things in the thread if the group was super chatty but so long as we have multiple eyes on it we should be good.

Alyana | 1064 comments Hi all, I just thought this might help on our tracking spreadsheet, so we may be able to see all the options for the spell outs? What do you think?

message 59: by Jillypenny (new)

Jillypenny | 193 comments Yeah, I wondered about the captains choosing the best use of the letters, too.

message 60: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments It's a good idea - we did something similar for UNO. I'll tweak our sheet a little :)

that's what we did for UNO too so I applied it for my own tracking sheet :)

Peg | 88 comments That's perfect, because I have many that have more than one letter option. So..my move is halfway done. My belongings are loaded up and won't arrive until the 15th, but I held out a few books and I have an abundance on the kindle. So I should be good to go right from the beginning, just will be quiet again for the next days, not arriving at my new home until the 10th. Will do my best to check in!

message 63: by Teddie (last edited Oct 08, 2021 06:58AM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Good Morning fellow Hooks & Crocs! We've made an update to the tracking sheet that allows players to indicate all the possible letter options a book has.

Players can enter books as usual, but will now put an "x" in the letter columns (H-O) for all options that apply for that book.

Put all the reasons for how the book fits in col G.

Check the box in Col A if the book has wheel(s) on the cover.

This setup will let captains decide which letter a book carries that we want to use. You'll see the cell with the x go blue if that letter is being used for that book, or grey if we're not using the letter (but books/letters may be swapped around as the round progresses.)

In the rows above the letters, you can see how many of a letter we have available in yellow row 5, how many we've used in blue row 4, and how many left of each letter we need in row 3 with red letters. Right now this is based on us forming 10 words, but we can always adjust this as we get closer to the end of a round. (The needed number of letters is based on letters used, not letters available.)

Over on the right, you'll see our matrix fill up with blue as letters get used.

Much of the sheet is automated, so you just need to fill in book info in columns B - O. If you can't get to the spreadsheet, feel free to post to the team thread with all the book info and options, and we'll get the books added to the sheet.

Let us know if there are any questions - and keep ferreting out those U's and I's! lol

Countdown to the start!! Which book are you planning to pick up first?

message 67: by Devann (new)

Devann (devannm) | 2778 comments i think i'm going to start with The Goddess of Nothing At All by Cat Rector and Hunted by Darcy Coates.

i was going to see if Dead Space by Kali Wallace would fit any letters this round but i figured i should save it in case we get a W next time lol. still want to try to read it sometime in october since it's horror though.

message 68: by Snezana (new)

Snezana | 339 comments The spreadsheet looks great, thanks Teddie! Should we link our books again? It seems the links were erased when you moved things around.

I'll be starting both The Poppy War and Stolen Heir, one of them tomorrow evening as soon as the challenge starts.

message 69: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Snezana wrote: " It seems the links were erased when you moved things around..."

Thanks Snezana - yes, it looks like some links stuck and others got lost - would be great if everyone would add back any lost links when updating your letter options. Thanks!

message 70: by Judy (new)

Judy | 4065 comments I'll be picking up Coming in First Place first I think. It's a reread and it's my favorite series in the entire world and I just got an ARC for book 2 so I'm itching to read it (it was previously published serially on AO3).

Also got If the Shoe Fits from the library so I might read that... unfortunately the two things I have to read for uni next don't hit the page count :(

message 71: by Snezana (new)

Snezana | 339 comments Updated links, unfortunately only To Sir Phillip, With Love has other options for the spell out.

Judy | 4065 comments Snezana wrote: "Updated links, unfortunately only To Sir Phillip, With Love has other options for the spell out."

Thanks :) and don't worry, you might find some more when you're actually reading the books that you can add later!

message 73: by Kate (new)

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments So excited! I think I am going to start with Isabel Allende's memoir My Invented Country: A Nostalgic Journey Through Chile - it's short but I will have plenty of longer books as we go along!

message 74: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments By the time I wake up tomorrow I'll be able to start reading! Yaaayyy! I'm going to start off with The Ronin's Mistress and Glossed and Found. I have over 100 books on deck including some of the dreaded Qs...I also have some whoppers for later. Can't wait!

The Ronin's Mistress (Sano Ichiro, #15) by Laura Joh Rowland Glossed and Found (A Bath and Body Mystery, #3) by India Ink

message 79: by Judy (new)

Judy | 4065 comments I'm stuck working for another 2-3 hours and then might have to do some uni reading first :( but soon...

message 80: by Kate (new)

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments Yeah!!!! I am in between prelims and finals at my son’s marching band competition so I am reading!

message 81: by Peg (new)

Peg | 88 comments Ok, I've started, and as a heads up, I probably won't hit my target this week since with moving and all. I started with Martin Harbottle's Appreciation of Time to get started on the U's.For some reason, my stack is full of U, W, C & E's!
Happy Reading Everyone!

message 82: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments We need all the Us, Is, and Os we can get!

As a reminder, don't forget to add the additional letters your book hits when you add your read date (put an x in that letter's column.)

Also, if you double-click on the date cell, a helpful little calendar will pop up. :)

message 83: by Peg (new)

Peg | 88 comments So obviously I can't follow directions, I just highlighted the letter box of the ones my book hits! The one I just read had only the U, I shall do better as I complete my next book. ;)

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments Back from the family funeral- going to catch up. Thanks to you all and the co-captains for holding down the fort while I was being present with family!

message 85: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I'm almost done with my 1st 2 books! I've also started on BOM #1 The Hollow Places.

The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher

How's everyone doing?

message 86: by Peg (new)

Peg | 88 comments Welcome back Kate!
I'm about halfway through my second book. I forgot how all the little details bog you down when moving. My belongings arrive Saturday so hopefully that will be the last big hurrah. I usually have 2 books going at the same time, one fiction and one non, but all habits have been out the window lately! Hopefully my groove will return soon, along with my sanity!

message 87: by Alyana (new)

Alyana | 1064 comments Welcome back Kate!

I'm currently finishing my 3rd book and just started my 4th one. Hope everyone's doing great!

message 88: by Peg (new)

Peg | 88 comments Ok, I have a curious question. I noticed on the challenge status spreadsheet, there is a column for tricky letters. Is this something that at the end the challenge there is bonus points? Seems this would be purely luck of the spin. I couldn't find any list identifying 'tricky' letters, but we can all agree Q fits that!

Judy | 4065 comments Peg wrote: "Ok, I have a curious question. I noticed on the challenge status spreadsheet, there is a column for tricky letters. Is this something that at the end the challenge there is bonus points? Seems this..."

Usually there are no bonus points, but I think there's sort of an award for the team that reads the most tricky letters?

Off the top of my head, they're X, Y, Z, Q, I, O, U

message 90: by Peg (new)

Peg | 88 comments Thanks! That makes sense. It is nice to have a set list of the tricky ones, because I could easily add a few to that list. Lol

message 91: by Judy (new)

Judy | 4065 comments We definitely need a few more Qs & Us this round... what a nuisance that they show up together every time!

message 92: by Judy (new)

Judy | 4065 comments I've got a second book nearly finished but I'm holding off cause it's an arc of a self-published book and doesn't yet a have a page count anywhere. I messaged the author hoping she'll update it soon-ish (I think it's supposed to come out this month anyway?) but we'll see...

message 93: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 2143 comments I was able to get House of Hollow from the library and plan to do the BOM.

I think I'm on target for my projected reading. I've started looking specifically for U's and Q's as well.

message 94: by Snezana (new)

Snezana | 339 comments I have finished two books so far and I'm reading third. Tomorrow I'll start House of Hollow. The adult BOM won't count for points this month?

I have added two more books to the spreadsheet, one U and one Q, the second one also has wheels on the cover. That's 7 books from me for now. If need be I could probably read another I.

I think we will win the tricky letters award with this round alone! lol

message 95: by Kate (new)

Kate (kcbond) | 643 comments Finished my second today as well and should finish my third this weekend. Planning to spreadsheet a bunch tomorrow after spending a fall break day with my kids and husband!

message 96: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments I'm doing the House Of Hollow BOM too!

Teddie (teddieg) | 2288 comments Weekend Update:

We're doing great, and have a few I's coming with with the House of Hollow readers. We could use more U's and a few more Q's.

Here's where we are on word creation:

We have 2 wheels read, one more on the way, so we need 2 more wheels on the covers for this round!

message 100: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 1723 comments I can pick up a Q with The Cat Who Moved a Mountain (character Jim Qwilleran). Also Aunt Dimity and the Summer King for a wheel on the cover and character Lori...

The Cat Who Moved a Mountain (Cat Who... #13) by Lilian Jackson Braun Aunt Dimity and the Summer King (Aunt Dimity Mystery, #20) by Nancy Atherton

It seems to me I'm always reading flat out like a crazy woman for Wheel, but this year I'm scared of the over-reading penalties...
