Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 77 comments West with the Night is the highlights reel from the first half of the life of a remarkable woman who, as Hemingway said, "can write rings around all of us who consider ourselves as writers." If you're looking for a tell-all, this isn't it. But what the author tells, she tells with grace and poetry. If you're in any way interested in reading about the exploits of a strong, determined woman in a bygone place and vanished society, run -- don't walk -- to your nearest bookstore or library and get this book. Five free-range zebras.

KOMET | 870 comments A couple of days ago, I finished reading the World War I combat memoir, "Wooden Crates & Gallant Pilots" by Stuart E. Elliott, a distant relation of Theodore Roosevelt, who had been a fighter pilot with the 13th Aero Squadron on the Western Front between July 1918 and the Armistice.

I came across this book (originally published in 1974) by chance last month and snatched it up fast, because very few veterans of the U.S. Army Air Service (USAS) wrote memoirs. This was a find as rare as hens' teeth!

On the whole, it was an interesting book to read, learning about the flight training Elliott received both in the U.S. and in France, his time as a ferry pilot, as well as the experiences he had at the Front and in French society.

KOMET | 870 comments A few minutes ago (it's 6:10 AM as I write this - 04/25/2023), I finished reading the novel "Sea Child: A Cape Breton Mystery" by the Canadian writer Renny deGroot.

Sea Child A Cape Breton Mystery (Cape Breton Mysteries Book 2) by Renny deGroot

Sea Child is a cleverly constructed, well-written mystery centered on the efforts of Detective Gordie MacLean of the Cape Breton Police Service (CBPS) and his partner Roxanne Albright to resolve the case of the death of a local lobster fisherman, whose body was found aboard his boat in waters far removed from where he was sanctioned to do his fishing. What seemed at first glance to be an accidental death turns out to be murder, which leads both detectives down dark, murky paths on a case that proves to be rich in complexity and fraught with peril. I rate it 5 STARS.

KOMET | 870 comments Yesterday (May 1, 2023), finished reading "C'est la Guerre: The Memoir of Capt. James McBrayer Sellers, USMC" ed. by James Gregory.

C'est la Guerre The Memoir of Capt. James McBrayer Sellers, USMC by James Gregory

Sellers, a Missourian who was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Chicago (Class of 1917), had enlisted in the United States Marine Corps (USMC) in June 1917 - two months after the U.S. entry into World War I. He soon earned for himself an officer's commission and fought in the Battles of Belleau Wood, Blanc Mont Ridge, and the Meuse-Argonne during the summer and fall of 1918. He proved to be a top leader of men in battle and earned many distinctions for bravery in combat.

Later, following the Armistice, Sellers' unit would be sent to Germany, where it formed part of the U.S. Army of Occupation. Sellers would return to the U.S. in August 1919.

Following his wartime service, Sellers returned to Missouri and served as an educator for close to 70 years. He died in 1990, age 95. All in all, it was a fascinating memoir to read.
