Luna yawned and snuggled in. She was warm but her ears shivered in the breeze. Her tail twitched quietly.

Kalil moved Luna's hood so it was covering her head. She had seemed cold. He put his arm around her, just in case she was still cold.
Luna seemed to relax as her hood went back to her head. Her tail paused and immediately curled around his arm. She tucked her head in and started to purr.
Kalil rubbed Luna's back slowly and softly. She seemed as if she was warmer. He looked around at the trees and sky.
Luna let out a quiet purr and curled in. Her tail flicked from side to side. Her ears perked up.
Amira sat next to her brother. "You like her don't you?" she asked, her voice quiet. "Luna?"Kalil nodded. "She's just a child." Amira knew exactly what her brother meant by that, but she didn't comment any more on the matter.
One of Luna’s ears flicked towards them and back while the other circled around, listening to the noises. Luna’s tail flicked up and down twice. She could hear them, but said nothing.
Kalil closed his eyes, thinking. His mind had begun to wander, which he hated, but he couldn't do anything about it. Everything had grown too quiet, which meant it was time for his mind and thoughts to become louder, to the point where they were almost deafening.
Luna let out a quiet yawn and sat up. She stretched out and rolled over onto her back. Her tail flicked from side to side.
Kalil glanced at Luna, then closed his eyes again. He kept hearing his father’s voice in his head, tormenting him. He took a deep breath.
Luna tilted her head at him "Are you okay?" Luna asked quietly. Her tail flicked.
Kalil looked at Luna. He tried to look as emotionless as possible, failing epically. “I’m fine,” he said, though his voice wasn’t very convincing.
Luna hugged him. Her tail patted his hurt knee softly. Her hoodie fell down.
Kalil smiled weakly at Luna. “Do you ever hear his voice in your head?” he asked. “Your father’s?” He stared at the trunk of a nearby tree.
Luna blinked “Yes. It’s bad to hear him in my head.” Luna said. She touched her head and winced.
“I hear mine in my head all the time,” Kalil admitted. “Telling me how worthless I am. How much of a mistake I was.” He shrugged. “I’m used to it, but it doesn’t make it any less depressing or traumatic.”
Luna watched “My father’s voice says that I’m no daughter of his anymore.” Luna said. Her tail twitched unhappily.
“He doesn’t deserve a daughter like you,” he said. “What about your mother?” he asked. “My mother is dead, but I guess that’s my fault.”
“My mother died giving birth to me.” Luna said. Her tail stopped moving. Her ears went down.
“Oh,” Kalil said. “I’m sorry. Did your father blame you for it?” He looked at Luna. His face was emotionless, but he felt awful. He didn’t want to potentially reopen any old wounds for Luna.
“Yes.” Luna said and rested her head on his knee. Her father did blame her and took out his rage on her constantly. She’d be happy if he died.
“Figures,” Kalil said, his voice scathing and spiteful. “Some parents have seemingly nothing better to do than make their children feel awful.” He pushed his right sleeve up, revealing the scars on his arm. He looked at the underside of his arm, where nine scars spelling “worthless” were. His father had inflicted them with a sword a couple weeks before he had been killed.
Luna blinked quietly at the scars and pulled her own sleeves up. Scars in long lines ran up and down her arms. Some were bleeding.
Kalil glanced at Luna’s scars. “You don’t see him anymore, right?” he asked. “Your father?” He was surprised at how protective his voice sounded. “How many scars do you have?”
Luna blinked “I see him sometimes in the streets. He whips me. I have about fifty.” Luna said. She touched a scar and winced.
“I have around the same,” Kalil said, clenching his jaw. “That and a crippled leg, because my father would stop at nothing until I was completely at his mercy.” He held out his arms to Luna. “Come here,” he invited.
Luna climbed into his arms without question. She circled around and laid down, her head resting on his left arm. She was light and warm, probably from the sweater.
Kalil held Luna with his right arm. “Don’t let your father win,” he told her. “That’s what he wants. That’s what all the people like him want. He wants to see you fall. He wants to break you. You can’t let him. Do you understand, Luna?”
Luna nodded. Her tail curled around his arm, soft. As she looked up at him, her moon barrette gleamed in the moonlight.
Kalip smiled at her. “None of the words he told you are true,” he said. “He’s wrong about you.” Luna’s tail was soft and comforting around his arm. “You are strong, Luna. You’re the strongest girl I’ve ever met.”
Luna blinked at him “N-No one’s ever said that to me.” Luna said. Her ears perked up. The moon barrette gleamed as if it were gold.
“It’s true,” Kalil said. He rolled his left shoulder, wincing. “You’re tough, Luna. Tougher than most people your age. Your scars don’t tell the whole story. Your scars say that you survived. That you’re a warrior.”
Luna sat up. “M-me? Only Aurora and Ella are warriors!” Luna said. Her tail moved quickly.
"You're a different kind of warrior," he said. "You're just as much of a warrior as they are." He looked at Luna, smiling warmly.
Luna purred, her tail curling around his arm again. She was never called a warrior but she was happy. She hugged him.
Kalil hugged Luna back. She was warm and even though he felt as if he was comforting her, she was succeeding in comforting him. For just a moment, the thoughts had ceased. For a moment, his mind had felt free. He longed for that feeling to stay, but he knew that would never happen.
Luna looked up at him and purred. Her green eyes were shining brightly, for her happiness had come back. The love she had was vast.
"I'm glad we met you," Kalil told Luna. He looked at her. "You remind me of how I was when I was younger, but less broken. You have great friends who care about you."
Luna smiled at him. Her smiles were rare and enough to make anyone else feel happy. Her tail whisked.
"Aurora said you had another friend?" Kalil asked. "Dove? She's at the warehouse?" He moved his left shoulder, feeling pain in it.
Luna tapped her tail “No. She’s actually here.” Luna said. Dove was her best friend, truth be told.
"Here?" Kalil asked. "Where?" He ran his hand through his hair.
Luna wrinkled her nose “I think in the ballroom?” Luna guessed. Her tail curled around his arm again.
Kalil glanced back at the ballroom. "Do you want to go see her?" he asked. "You probably haven't seen or talked to her in a little while."
Luna shook her head “No. She wants to be left alone.” Luna said. Her tail shivered slightly.
"She likes being alone?" Kalil asked. That sounded familiar. Kalil was used to spending most of his time alone. He was actually interacting more with people here than he had in a few years.
"Yes. It's scary, honestly." Luna said. She shivered subconsciously as she remembered Dove's solitude, which scared her.
"I used to spend most of my time alone," Kalil said. "Didn't really have many friends growing up. My father always forced me to kill them, so I forced myself to be alone. I didn't want anyone else to die."
"Is your father alive still?" Luna asked quietly, not wanting to make him angry or anything. Her father was still alive and would probably find her sooner or later. Her tail twitched nervously.
Kalil shook his head. His eyes were sad. "He died a few months ago. I accidentally stabbed him in the heart with is own sword because he was trying to hurt me. Self-defense or not, I still feel horrible about it. His last word still torments me. 'Murderer' was the last thing he said before he died." He sighed. "He was an awful man, but a part of me still loved him. He was my father, even though he never acted like it. I always tried so hard growing up to do whatever I could to earn his love and approval. All I ever did was try and try to make him proud. It was stupid. It was the mindset of a naive, idiotic, weak, and worthless boy."
