Thomas Looks like I’m going to need help with non fiction no subtitle

message 552: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments More good points Irene!! I’ll edit that out when I suggest it.

Thomas, I wouldn’t worry too much. Even if people are saying they are upvoting it in the other thread, the large majority of voters don’t post on that thread. Also, I think someone said it there, nonfiction prompts are always tough to get in.

But we’re here for you if you need the help!

message 553: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3854 comments Thomas- if the nonfiction prompt gets through, I guarantee that there will be lots of great options! But, like Alicia said, this thread is NOT representative of the group. It’s just the chatty members. So, not to worry… I can’t wait to see what goes through!

message 554: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2127 comments I was thinking of an option for the multi week prompt - 2 books related to "Real" & "Fake". That way, readers could pick a fiction and a non fiction book, a book set in a real place version a made up world, Or maybe read 2 books about forgery or people pretending to be someone their not...

message 555: by Beth (new)

Beth | 450 comments It happens so often that it looks like a prompt will surely be voted in based on the discussion and then it's nowhere to be found in the actual results! It can be disappointing/relieving depending on your feeling toward the prompt(s). The majority of voters don't comment so it's difficult to get an accurate idea of how the voting will go. I've been doing this challenge for several years and never used to comment until fairly recently. I've found it really helpful to discuss ideas for prompts and feel like I get much more from the challenge compared to when I used to just vote. I wish more members would join in!

message 556: by Beth (new)

Beth | 450 comments I like that idea, Kendra! It could be fun to do a fiction & non-fiction based on the same topic/people/location.

message 557: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I liked the idea of reading a book inspired by one of your reads in 2021 because I often get inspired to read a non-fiction book that relates to a fiction book I have read and may want to understand further. So I would be open to a real/fake idea.

message 560: by Ira (new)

Ira | 361 comments I have an idea for a prompt suggestion but I don't know how to word it. The idea is to have a word related to time on the title of the book. examples I can think of are year, minute, week, second, century, day, etc.

message 561: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11245 comments Mod
Maybe something like “A book with a unit of time in the title”?

message 562: by [deleted user] (new)

Maybe 'A book with a unit of time in the title (hour, day, week, etc)'

message 563: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I like the unit of time idea and hope you suggest it. As soon as i read "A book with a unit of time in the title" I understood it.

message 564: by [deleted user] (new)

Oops, sorry Emily. I didn't see your comment first.

No worries! Great minds think alike!

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) Jumping back a bit in the conversation, I would vote for almost any variation of the Taylor Swift/22 prompt! I'm afraid it's walking a fine line of too narrow vs too open though, in getting enough votes to actually go through...

Side note, way back when, her song Love Story was actually instrumental in making my husband he might want to marry me. (So clearly, I will fight anyone who says it's a bad song. ;-) )

Ha! Bring it on, Raquel! (It's not that it's a bad song... it's a mixed metaphor that sets me off as a (former) high school English teacher who teaches the scarlet letter).

I'd support the 22 prompt. Lyrically, it has night, midnight, stranger, love, happy, free, lonely, magical, and heartbreak in the lyrics. I can think of a ton of books with those words in the titles.

message 569: by Ron (new)

Ron (ronstjohn) | 205 comments How do I get into the actual discussion threads for Best Book of the Month 2021 and 2022 threads? There has to be a link somewhere and I am just hitting a wall. Not the Listopia, the actual discussion threads.

And can I just take a book I want to read, post it in the current thread, and voila it is posted in a 2021 thread?

message 570: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments Hey Ron, here are the threads for the Best Books for each month: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

The threads are technically for books that members have read that month and really loved. But if you read a book and enjoyed it, but can't find a place to put it, you could add it to the thread.

message 571: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (last edited Jul 06, 2021 10:47AM) (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11245 comments Mod
Hey Ron, our weekly discussion threads for our 2022 list won't be up until October or November once we finalize the list order! Right now, you can just discuss options and thoughts on the results thread for each poll and contribute to the listopia.

I personally use the community spreadsheet and the listopias to track which books I want to read for each prompt, if that's what you're looking for.

message 572: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I think Ron is looking for a loophole for that one, so instead of reading a book and adding it to the list, he wants to add a book he wants to read to the list, therefore making it on the list.

message 573: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (last edited Jul 06, 2021 11:47AM) (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11245 comments Mod
Oh! If you read a book you love, you can post that book on the Best Book of the Month threads (like the June or July one), and then you can then add it to the listopia or one of the mods will add it for you. It's not automatic, but we do require that you post in the Best Book of the Month threads before posting the book to the listopia.

That being said, you shouldn't add books you haven't read yet!

message 574: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments I also like the unit of time prompt (and I also understand it clearly with the "unit of time in the title" phrasing), I'd vote for that. It's definitely one that gets my brain whirring, like "Oh, that would work, ooh so would that one...."

message 575: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 922 comments Question: for the best books of 2021/2022 prompt (from the pre-poll), would you count it if YOU read a great book in 2022 and posted it yourself in the best books of the month thread? Feels like a bit of a loophole but maybe a KIS option for people who can't find something they like from the lists?

message 576: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11245 comments Mod
I mean… if you want to count it, then sure? If it was truly your best book of the month, then technically it would be on the list. It’s easy to find loopholes if you’re looking for them (or need them!)

I don't think so? If you read a book and then post it to the threads, it wasn't a Best Book of the Month when you actually read it.

message 578: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 922 comments Thanks Emily and Annie!!

@Annie, that's true! I guess I was thinking that because I tend to sort my prompt-less books into incomplete prompts at the end of the year, months after actually reading them, it could count. But like Emily said, I'd only do that if I needed the loophole and if I really did consider that book my best of the month!

message 579: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2127 comments I kinda prefer the 'time related words' wording because that lets me use words like LATE, BEFORE, NIGHT, etc. But that's just me.

haha I love this...reminds me of some crazy time travel thing...travel to the future, read a book, pop it on the list, travel back to the present, check the list, yep your book is there ,count it!

Irene wrote: "@Annie, that's true! I guess I was thinking that because I tend to sort my prompt-less books into incomplete prompts at the end of the year, months after actually reading..."

Ah! That's fair. I didn't think of it like that but of course, the challenge prompts are as flexible or rigid as you'd like. Sometimes you just need a loophole!

message 583: by NancyJ (last edited Jul 07, 2021 12:16PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3680 comments OK I think I have one that might work for 2022. This is my first suggestion, so any help is appreciated.

Read a book that honors Betty White (who will turn 100 in 2022).

Betty White was born in January 1922, so (I hope) she will turn 100 in 2022. (Even if she doesn't make it to 100, she will be honored by the press.) I think most people know who she is. My 22 year old niece LOVES her, and anything related to the Golden Girls. She's a great model for active aging.

This could include books about:

Old people - funny, active, sassy, or otherwise
Funny women, funny actresses, long living actors and comedians.
Memoirs, Golden Girls, other TV shows, characters she played.
The theme song "Thank you for being a friend"
Aging
the words "Golden girl" - a search returned 879 results.
Living a long life - health, humor, medical science
Immortality - through magic or science fiction. (Vampires, Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, body swaps, transhuman/AI.)

Could also have the word "White" or "Golden" in the title or a character named Betty. Really fun idea! I love Betty White!

message 590: by Deborah (new)

Deborah | 348 comments I love Betty White. I think this is a good one. I think since she is turning 100, you might be able to tie in books that take place 100 years ago, for 100 years, 100 years in the future...etc.

message 591: by Conny (new)

Conny | 649 comments The Betty White idea is a great, creative idea for a prompt. I would upvote it :)

message 592: by Ron (new)

Ron (ronstjohn) | 205 comments Always glad to spark controversy. No loophole here, just thinking out loud. Since posting in best-books-of-month is for books you've already read, there is no loophole because you have to read something already on the list at the time you read it. I am doing a BIO overlay trying to read books published during the first twenty years of my life from 1956 - 1976, and am curious if there are any books at all that meet those two search criteria.

message 593: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3854 comments Hey Ron! If you have some specific books in mind, post them here and I will try to read one in July or August! I like modern classics. I have several I’m planning to read this year. I can post them here to see if there is one you are interested in. I can’t guarantee it will be a favorite but it could be. I like your BIO limitation! That’s a great idea.

Agreed! I've read a few from that time period in the last year or so and could post if there are any matches.

Thomas Just thought of a book for Here be Dragons: Blood orange. The year of the dragon is assicociated with power and sucess BUT in recent years has been assicoaited with choas and disorder due to over capcaoty in hospitals. Blood Orange is about a woman who appears powerful and sucessfull but underneath the surface is coming apart. what do you think? Is it too big a stretch?

In this group, it's always ultimately up to you to decide, especially for a prompt like this that is open-ended.

Thomas, those kinds of questions are better for the results thread for that prompt than in the Wild Discussion where it can get buried pretty easily. You may want to post it there and people will be more likely to help out.

message 598: by Aimee (last edited Jul 08, 2021 12:54AM) (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) I know cover prompts aren't everyone's favourite, but I've read a lot of books lately that had symmetrical covers and I wondered if there was a good prompt in there somewhere. Something along the lines of "a book that has a cover with an element of symmetry on" (i.e. doesn't have to have total symmetry, as that might be too restrictive).

To give you an idea of what I mean, here are a couple of examples:

The Confessions of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins The Mime Order (The Bone Season, #2) by Samantha Shannon Circe by Madeline Miller Pachinko by Min Jin Lee Extraordinary Insects by Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson The Bedlam Stacks by Natasha Pulley Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) by Kristin Cashore

What do people think?

message 599: by Kat (new)

Kat | 567 comments I don’t always like cover prompts as they can lean towards certain genres or niche interests. Symmetrical covers is a great idea and should work for everyone. They are also really satisfying to look at.

Oh Aimee, I love that. I looked at your post on my phone app and it didn't show the examples, so I was a little unsure, but now that I'm on a desktop and can see what you mean, I see what you mean!
