Samantha | 1567 comments Ahoy! A book that is one of the first you ever read on your own Oh my that is hard to remember - The Wump World is one that I choose at the library and read on my own, it was one of my childhood favorites.
Blimey A book you thought would be great but was not Most recently The Sanatorium, it had so much hype but besides the setting it was kind of let down.

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 1025 comments Ahoy! A book that is one of the first you ever read on your own
Oh, my! I'm in my mid-sixties! Who the hell knows? LOL I would guess it would be a Dr. Seuss book, perhaps Green Eggs and Ham or The Cat in the Hat.

Blimey A book you thought would be great but was not
I think I expected The Catcher in the Rye to blow me away, but it just didn't...
And, OMG! The one classic I thought would be such a wonderful reading experience and I just had to DNF it: One Hundred Years of Solitude. It definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. Not at all something I could get through, let alone appreciate. UGH!

Booty A book you treasure
Oh, my! So many! Uhm...one that I haven't yet read, The Third Angel, but I treasure it because a very dear friend purposefully purchased it and sent it to me...

Crow's Nest A book that spans a long period of time
While "a long period of time" is definitely subjective, I suppose Homegoing would be my selection, spanning several generations.

Jolly Roger A book with a black and white cover
I hope to finish White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism in the next couple of months and then also read The Central Park Five: The Untold Story Behind One of New York's Most Infamous Crimes

Matey A book you'd recommend to everyone
Oh, wow. Such a long list... Two that I have recommended over the past 10 years: The School of Essential Ingredients and The Art of Racing in the Rain!
I recently read The House in the Cerulean Sea which I absolutely adored, and The Midnight Library which was inspirational, IMO!

Yarr A book that starts with the letter R
The Relentless Moon! I adore Kowal's Lady Astronaut series!
I hope to read Rich People Problems this summer. I have so enjoyed the first two books in Kwan's Crazy Rich Asian series!

Shiver Me Timbers A book that scared you
I make it a point NOT to read books that scare me. Period.

message 4: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 604 comments Ahoy! A book that is one of the first you ever read on your own - Ladybird Keyword Book 1a “Play With Us”. I was disappointed.

Blimey A book you thought would be great but was not - Their Finest Hour and a Half

Booty A book you treasure - Diana Athill’s memoir Instead of a Letter. My great grandmother is in there.

Crow's Nest A book that spans a long period of time - Accordion Crimes

Jolly Roger A book with a black and white cover - The Lonely Londoners

Matey A book you'd recommend to everyone - Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling

Yarr A book that starts with the letter R - Remarkable Creatures

Shiver Me Timbers A book that scared you - the only time I can remember being frightened by a book (along with the other 20 kids in my primary school) was when they tried us out on a children’s horror story involving a greenhouse full of mutant tomatoes. I think it was a “let’s get boys reading” initiative. There were complaints.

Roxana (luminate) | 769 comments Ahoy! A book that is one of the first you ever read on your own: The Marvelous Mud Washing Machine I don't remember learning to read, but I know this was my favorite as a very small child.
Blimey: A book you thought would be great but was not: The Maidens -- haven't read The Silent Patient, so I didn't know what to expect from this author, but I loved the premise/setting of it...and was suuuuper disappointed.
Booty: A book you treasure: The Martian Chronicles -- specifically my signed copy ❤️
Crow's Nest: A book that spans a long period of time: Orlando
Jolly Roger: A book with a black and white cover: Laughter in the Dark
Matey: A book you'd recommend to everyone: Witchmark
Yarr: A book that starts with the letter R: Roxaboxen
Shiver Me Timbers: A book that scared you: The Goosebumps books freaked me the heck out as a kid. My first grade class teacher's assistant insisted on reading them to us during reading time over the course of the entire year, and I sat with my ears plugged the whole time because they gave me nightmares and stomachaches. (The next year, we started homeschooling. It wasn't because of that, but at that age, it felt like it to me, lol.) ...I like horror in general a lot more now, but I still feel queasy when I see a Goosebumps cover.

Kendra | 2088 comments Ahoy! A book that is one of the first you ever read on your own
Speak Up, Christopher: Christopher Learns the Difference Between Right and Wrong
This was the first book I managed to read on my own, chosen because it revolved around a trip to the museum to see a T-Rex skeleton. I was so determined to be able to read, and I felt so accomplished once I could that I kept this book in a special place of honour.😁 I still have it.
Blimey A book you thought would be great but was not
Jaws - I loved the movie. But this was a terrible book. It's actually impressive how they were able turn it into something good.

Crow's Nest A book that spans a long period of time
Princesses Behaving Badly: Real Stories from History—Without the Fairy-Tale Endings
Jolly Roger A book with a black and white cover
Death in the Baltic The World War II Sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff by Cathryn J. Prince
Matey A book you'd recommend to everyone
It's hard to imagine a book that absolutely everyone would love, but I would recommend Pride and Prejudice to almost everyone.
Yarr A book that starts with the letter R
Rosemary and Rue
Shiver Me Timbers A book that scared you
Books don't really scare me because they always come from my imagination, which means I have control, where as if I watch a movie it is somehow more real. But I will say, the beginning chapters of The Stand ran through my mind A LOT over the past year and a half.😛
