Maybe Maxon from the Selection series? I don’t think that’s a dystopian society and he’s a male with brown hair and in a game.
I'm going to edited the "in a game" to participates in a game/competition". The whole book isn't about being in a game. Just don't want to confuse anyone.

I haven't read a lot of the books on this list, especially ones with male characters, but could it possibly be Thomas from the Maze Runner series or Adam from the Raven Boys? Probably not but those are the only ones I think are even close.

As for Adam, I see "main character" as anyone who has a lot of POV in the story which counts for him as well as Blue so idk. Even so, he doesn't fit for the other clues.
I have a review up for Firekeeper's daughter but I don't know much about I am Number Four. Do they investigate anything or is there a murder and they don't know who it is?
Or is John from I am Number Four an outcast of some kind?
