Three generations of daughters in Palestine spanning the years of the Ottoman Empire to recent times. Ironically they all had a secret about their parentage that only the mother or a close family member knew. Mariam 's mother was pregnant with a Russian's daughter so family arranged a quick marriage to a deaf man, Mariam had an affair with an English doctor during WWII while her husband was fighting and became pregnant with Nadia. Nadia kept loosing her pregnancies but finally seemed to hold on to this one as she neared term and while her husband was on a business trip , she stayed at their country place with her sister-in-law. She did lose the baby but while she grieved, before telling anyone, a private plane crashed in the desert with a family of three and only the infant survived. Nadia found her and declared she passed her off as the baby she had lost and named her Nijmeh. the themself is that all three were closer to their supposed fathers than their mothers and there was the theme of culture values changing each generation. In Mariam's day, the perfect spouse is a cousin. In Nadia's as she and her husband had been educated at a school run by the British, the young ones were being to be concerned about genetics, they were second cousins and while cousins marriages were still accepted, Most were marrying outside their clan and Nijmeh's parents never considered it, even though in reality she was of American descent with no Palestinian blood.
