Just completed a book set in Molinov, Russia - Lost Roses by Martha Hall Kelly. The book is well-researched and interesting. However, I did not feel the connection to the characters that I felt in her first book. It just seems to have missed the same quality as the first book. Still worth reading. 4 stars

Diane (diane_g) | 608 comments Hello fellow challengers! We just finished the first month of the challenge and I wanted to give you an update on where we stand.

38 people signed up to participate in the challenge and more than half of us (23) have started it. We committed to 454 books over the course of the quarter and have read 114 (25%) towards meeting that goal.

We’ve visited 45!!!! unique country/area locations in our reading (including all 7 continents!), and have read three books by a trans/non-binary authors.

I am having a ton of fun with this challenge and am getting introduced, by all of you, to a lot of interesting new books. Thanks to all of you who are participating in this diversity challenge! I hope you are excited and having fun too.

Just completed a book set in Paris, France - The Ladies of the Secret Circus by Constance Sayers. Overall, I enjoyed this fantastical, macabre tale. It was a nice escape from a day of chores. And I really appreciated the exploration of the relationship between the related women. However, there were bits missing and a few parts that were a bit too long for the overall story. I received this book as a free giveaway in exchange for my honest review. Worth reading! 4 stars

Just completed a book set in Mallorca, Spain - Under Almond Blossoms by Anja Saskia Beyer, translated by Annette Charpentier. I appreciated learning about Mallorca and the history of their Jewish families. However, most of the rest of the book was annoying. I didn’t like the main character. Her inner monologue was repetitive and should have been edited down. Overall, just so-so. 2.5 stars

Just completed a book set in Victoria, Australia - The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth. This book was ok. The writing is clear and straight-forward, and I liked the characters. I figured out the twist almost immediately. And there is harm to an animal that I found to be unnecessary. I would have appreciated knowing the research the author did in sensory-processing issues, as that is definitely something that can be misconstrued or stereotyped without personal experience or proper research. Entertaining overall. 3.5 stars

Just completed a book set in Lagos, Nigeria - The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Dare. This is a beautiful story full of hope and determination. I loved the way the author used language to convey the journey of her main character. “We all be speaking different because we all are having different growing-up life, but we can all be understanding each other if we just take the time to listen well.” Definitely worth reading! 5 stars
