In this 2nd book in the Harbinder Kaur series, the police detective investigates several suspicious deaths. The book works fine as a standalone.
Great puzzle for armchair sleuths. 3.5 stars

I generally have the same problem when I get new books, but as they host a monthly book club meeting via Zoom, I've actually read through at least half a dozen from this series since I've joined up. We'll be discussing The Chocolate Cobweb at the beginning of March, and the book for the April meeting is

Pretty Little Wife

Strong female characters and some decent twists. My full review:

Long Beach Homicide #2, might be helpful to read the previous book but not really necessary. Homicide detective investigates the murder of a woman and her 2 small children. She was the daughter-in-law of a US Congressman so things get complicated and bloody. This is an amazing mystery. The plot moves ahead quickly and gets complicated along with the characters who are deftly drawn with humanity and depth. I loved this book -- highest recommendation, 5 stars.

It is an enjoyable short story that can be read in 1 hour.

Thank you, Tara! I may do that when/if things start quieting down here.

Finished reading The Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit by Michael Finkel -- this month's IRL book group choice. It's about a guy who for some reason still not known, decided one day in 1986 to get out of his car, hike into the woods and not come out for 27 years except to steal things out of people's cabins. I'm sort of torn -- the story is fascinating, but the author resorted to some pretty lowlife methods to get his story.
Also finished reading The German Client: A Bacci Pagano Investigation by Italian author Bruno Morchio -- a good mystery split between 1944 and present day and published by Kazabo Publishing, a small indie press that puts out translated crime fiction, sort of like what Pushkin Vertigo does.

other books finished (and until tomorrow no time to post about these):
The Collected Connoisseur and Inner Europe both by Mark Valentine and John Howard;
still working on Blood on the River: A Chronicle of Mutiny and Freedom on the Wild Coast.

which is the final volume in this omnibus collection:

These aren't really mysteries - more like horror or dark fantasy - but the final story "The Last Illusion" introduces detective Harry D'Amour who also appears in other works by Clive Barker.
and I started reading:

The Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice

Joe Wilderness #2, series should be read in order. Further adventures of Joe Holderness, AKA Wilderness, British crook and spy, in Berlin 1963 and flashbacks prior. These spy novels by Lawton are very well done. I see them as rather a cross of Len Deighton and John le Carre. I liked this book a lot, 4 stars.

A literary mystery for book lovers.
