Award-winning mystery set in Calcutta in 1919. Former Scotland Yard detective, newly in India, is presented with a murder and the only thing he has going for him is a loyal assistant. I liked the book, loved the atmosphere, 4 stars.

Phoebe Wynne
4 out of 5 stars. Part coming-of age, part psychological suspense, and part gothic fiction. My review is below.

Detective Peter Decker searches for a missing man and investigates the death of a college student.
It's always fun to visit with favorite characters but this mystery is just okay. 3 stars

The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War by Malcolm Gladwell
Sandy - I’m a third way through the novel and enjoying it thus far.

While not as funny as the series' debut, it was good to catch up with Finlay and her antics.

Finished The Angel of the Crows by Katherine Addison. I found it enjoyable. She uses a variation on Holmes/Watson (Crow/Dr. Doyle) and takes some of the AC Doyle stories and re-configures them to a Victorian London in which vampires, werewolves, and far less pleasant beings co-exist, meantime examining the limits of deductive reasoning. I wouldn't call it a great fantasy, but the way in which she weaves the relationship between the two main characters, the needs of fleshing out her world, and the convergence of the duo with the most notorious murderer of the age is extremely clever and makes a satisfying read.
Now, better than half-way through Windy City Blues a collection of V. I. Warshawski stories by Sara Paretsky.

Currently reading Cross Creek by Marjorie Kennan Rawlings for this month's IRL book group meeting, and quite honestly, I'm not loving it. I'm probably going to be the only one in the group that doesn't gush over the book. As soon as the group meeting is over Thursday, I'll be picking up with my regular reading again and donate my copy of Cross Creek to the friends of the library.

A rich uptight housewife is shocked to learn a prostitute character in her husband's book is modeled after her.
Good story. 4 stars

I picked it up a few weeks ago and I must say it's even more interesting than I thought. It's a very cleverly written story with layers upon layers. Pity that I only have 30-60 minutes a day reading time...

Entertaining mystery. My four star review:

Finished with Cross Creek and I was right -- no warm fuzzies for me. Loved the nature writing but after some time researching after reading it, I found out that a lot of stuff was made up and that despite her claim of being united with her fellow Cross Creek dwellers in hardship, that didn't happen. So disappointing, given that it's labeled as a memoir.

Reading a story collection, Windy City Blues by Sara Paretsky, all starring V. I. Warshawski. My chief complaint is the story-telling is so brisk and smart I've breezed through the book and only have about 20 pages left and I'd like more. Paretsky varies between serious and comic, so the tone of the collection doesn't become monotonous. I've only read Indemnity Only, so I guess i should consider pulling out another of her novels.

A long-time British spymaster gets a letter from a whistleblower which leads him to investigate a former spy.
This is le Carré's last novel, published after his death. 3 stars
