Araych | 676 comments The Hellfire Club The Hellfire Club by Jake Tapper by Jake Tapper

Political thriller. Washington DC, 1954. Freshman Congressman and pregnant wife get involved in political intrigue and several murders. Loved the setting and the period pieces but the plotting and dialogue was rather amateurish. Good guy gets grabbed by the bad guys and they explain their whole plan rather than just shoot him. Really a 2 star book but I gave 3 stars for the period setting and the helpful bibliography.

I like Winslow a lot. He might be my favorite modern crime fiction author. I'll look forward to hearing what you think of his short fiction.

Araych | 676 comments Blood Alone Blood Alone (Billy Boyle World War II, #3) by James R. Benn by James R. Benn

Billy Boyle #3, possible to read as a stand-alone but not recommended. I'm reading this series in order and this is the weakest so far. In this one Billy is involved in the conquest of Sicily during WW II. More a war-centered adventure story than a mystery although there certainly are mystery elements. And Mafia ! 2 stars.

Let's see. I've finished two Valancourt novels, Tenebrae and The Sign of the Spider: An Episode, by Bertram Mitford. The first was very much on the gothic side, while the second falls into the category of Imperial Gothic, set in South Africa. Both were quite good. Now I'll be starting Le Carre's Agent Running in the Field for the group read, Cane by Jean Toomer as we head into Black History Month, and still working on My Fantoms, as part of my year of reading opium.

Amazon has a huge selection of e-book titles (I own several of these myself but I'm pretty well "booked" this year so I have no idea when I'll get to them) and I have a Stark House edition that combines two books in one: Nothing in Her Way / River Girl.

I don't do e-books but I saw that Mysterious Press had just about all of Williams' novels published in that format. I did see the Stark House double and I've got my eye on it. I like when they have their $5 warehouse sales.

For the most part, war histories have been written by men, and brave women have been given short shrift. Judy Batalion helps correct this by telling the stories of Jewish women in Poland who resisted the Nazis during World War II.
