One more Brett mystery to end the month, Charles Paris #3, Star Trap

All the Devils Are Here which was pretty good. It's set in Paris and not in Canada

Finished The Problem of the Green Capsule by John Dickson Carr. This was pretty good, actually but its British title, The Black Spectacles, makes much more sense.

My favourite le Carré- felt like a very realistic Cold War tale

Political thriller. Washington DC, 1954. Freshman Congressman and pregnant wife get involved in political intrigue and several murders. Loved the setting and the period pieces but the plotting and dialogue was rather amateurish. Good guy gets grabbed by the bad guys and they explain their whole plan rather than just shoot him. Really a 2 star book but I gave 3 stars for the period setting and the helpful bibliography.

I like Winslow a lot. He might be my favorite modern crime fiction author. I'll look forward to hearing what you think of his short fiction.

The fifth and final book in the Stillhouse Lake series. Here’s a link to my four star review:

I rated it 3 stars. It is literary fiction, set in 1980s Paris. There are depictions of torture and drug dealing.

I'm one behind you, but my next two books will likely take a while to get through.

It wasn't perfect but I also liked the time frame and setting.

NOW A MOVIE
In this Booker Prize Winner, an Indian boy born into poverty pulls himself up by the bootstraps with hard work, deviousness, and criminal activity.
Very good story. 4 stars

JANUARY WRAP-UP! (Thrillers, self-help and magical realism!)
https://youtu.be/AK2ipdfsye8

In this 36th book in the 'Alex Delaware' series, the psychologist helps his friend, Lieutenant Milo Sturgis, investigate a cold case. The book can be read as a standalone.
Good thriller. 3.5 stars

Billy Boyle #3, possible to read as a stand-alone but not recommended. I'm reading this series in order and this is the weakest so far. In this one Billy is involved in the conquest of Sicily during WW II. More a war-centered adventure story than a mystery although there certainly are mystery elements. And Mafia ! 2 stars.

I do have to finally read the first book in this series.

I knew you'd like The Hot Spot.
Let's see. I've finished two Valancourt novels, Tenebrae and The Sign of the Spider: An Episode, by Bertram Mitford. The first was very much on the gothic side, while the second falls into the category of Imperial Gothic, set in South Africa. Both were quite good. Now I'll be starting Le Carre's Agent Running in the Field for the group read, Cane by Jean Toomer as we head into Black History Month, and still working on My Fantoms, as part of my year of reading opium.

It's like it was written just for me. Have you read it? I didn't see a review from you.

Oh yes. Long ago, along with Talk of the Town (which is also great) and Go Home, Stranger.

I picked up the Hard Case Crime edition of [book:A Touch of Death|238117] and I'll be on the lookout for more of his stuff. Dead Calm especially, since I enjoyed the movie (although I understand they are not exactly alike).

Amazon has a huge selection of e-book titles (I own several of these myself but I'm pretty well "booked" this year so I have no idea when I'll get to them) and I have a Stark House edition that combines two books in one: Nothing in Her Way / River Girl.

I don't do e-books but I saw that Mysterious Press had just about all of Williams' novels published in that format. I did see the Stark House double and I've got my eye on it. I like when they have their $5 warehouse sales.

A wildly entertaining thriller. Here’s a link to my 4.5 star review:

It is a thriller centered on a plot to steal the gold that the UK sent to Canada for safekeeping in 1940. It starts in the UK, moves to the US, then Canada. My 4 star review

For the most part, war histories have been written by men, and brave women have been given short shrift. Judy Batalion helps correct this by telling the stories of Jewish women in Poland who resisted the Nazis during World War II.
Very good book. 4 stars

A former juvenile delinquent is framed for murder and plots revenge. Alaska is a great setting for this mystery.
