When two women and a child go missing from a community, the townsfolk are frightened and the police investigate.

Compelling story with shaky ending. 3.5 stars

Daniel Jeudy (danieljeudy) | 1 comments I have been on a mission of late, discovering great new books from yesteryear. My search led me to "The Choirboys" by Joseph Wambaugh. What a great book!

The Choirboys is a tragicomic parody about the effects of urban police work on young officers, seen through the exploits of a group of Los Angeles police officers in the Wilshire Division of the Los Angeles Police Department while an investigation is being conducted into an alleged shooting that took place in Macarthur Park, a frequent hangout of the group.

A group of ten patrol officers on the nightwatch conducts end-of-shift get-togethers they euphemistically call "choir practices" (possibly to hide their true nature from superiors but actually a sardonic reference). These "choir practices" almost always involve heavy drinking, complaints about their superior officers, and war stories (and, occasionally, group sex with a pair of lusty, overweight barmaids). They hold the choir practices in MacArthur Park because it is in another division's territory and "one does not shit in one's own nest."

Each of the officers is disillusioned, to varying degrees, that many of the people they're paid to protect are not unlike the suspects they arrest, and that the ridiculous regulations of their department are onerously enforced on them while their commanders (without skills in police work) indulge themselves hypocritically. Wambaugh's portrayals of the ten officers are archetypes of varied personalities found in police departments in the 1970s, albeit well-drawn, but his most cutting descriptions are saved for the brutal "black-glove officer," Roscoe Rules. The theme of police officer suicide (also known as "eating your gun"), which runs through many of Wambaugh's books, provides a grim undercurrent to the black humour of the novel and suggests a sub-conscious motivation for their activities.

If anyone can recommend any great reads from the '70s and 80s, I would appreciate it.

Bernie Gunther #5, recommend the series be read in order. Another outstanding effort by Kerr. This one takes place in Argentina, 1950, and Germany 1932 in flashback. Don't really want to say much more -- I've already given a spoiler (yes, Bernie survives the war). Liked it a lot, 4 stars.

You cannot miss The Onion Field. It's not fiction, but it is amazing both in terms of subject and writing.

Atkinson is a great author, both her Jackson Brodie series and her standalones.

I just grabbed my copy of Peter Ibbetson off the shelf. I hope you enjoy Trilby. It can become a bit draggy in spots, but stick with it.

Insurmountable is right. Sheesh! Hopefully that discussion will be well attended since so many people voted for it.

Continuing my effort of reading my neglected books, late last night I finished Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It's an excellent book, about a man who is killed, while pretty much everyone in the town knew it was going to happen and never said a word.

I'll have plenty of parking lot time this week so I'll be starting Magpie Murders.
