This is a good story reminiscent of the pulp fiction noir novels of Raymond Chandler and Dasheill Hammett.

Right? Not going to lie, Nancy. When I read a title & start laughing, grabbing the book is a no-brainer.

1st in a series about ex-cop Kevin Kerney. In this book Kerney is asked by his former partner to locate the partner's missing son. Takes place in rural New Mexico with wonderful evocative descriptions of magical New Mexico . Very well done with a complex plot and the story moves right alone. I liked it a lot and I'll be reading more in the series. 4 stars.

I recommend it only to someone interested in the actual battle of Karbala, 680CE.

Yesterday I finished reading a book called Mr. Digweed and Mr. Lumb by Eden Philpotts (1933), a true puzzler of a mystery. Philpotts is the author of another book I really enjoyed, The Red Redmaynes.
Finished Those Who Wish Me Dead - Brief review
And now, for something completely different, Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings by Christopher Moore.

Newly(ish) married Hannah Hall is bewildered when her husband disappears after leaving her a mysterious note.
Engaging (but slightly farfetched) thriller. 3 stars

Here is my five star review:

Peter Grant #1, 1st in a series, APA Rivers of London, which is a better title. Grant is a probationary police constable in London which means, like any newby or trainee, he gets the crap jobs, like guarding a crime scene in the middle of the night. When he finds a witness. Well done, mate, except the witness is a ghost. The book is a paranormal police procedural, full of wit and fun. Think Charles Stross's Laundry series. I loved it and I'll be reading the series. 5 stars.

I love the Laundry series. So much fun. I can't remember which one it was since it's been so long, but there was one that came right out of James Bond.

Yesterday I started There's Trouble Brewing, by Nicholas Blake (1937). The dead person is killed in a beer vat, which reminded me of how many times that scenario's been used on tv. I think the first time I saw it was on Midsomer Murders; New Tricks had one murder like that and Brokenwood used a variation on the theme. I'm sure there are more.

I like Moore's books sometimes, especially his Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal and his Sacré Bleu. He can be so twisted.

Good, and had a still timely concept, but could have been executed a little better. For its time, it was probably better.

I'll be reading Magpie Murders shortly. I only bought the one book to decide whether I like it enough to continue.

Still working on There's Trouble Brewing by Nicholas Blake. It's a bit of a slog if I'm honest, and I've got 80-something pages left to go. Hopefully I'll finish today because I need to move on.
Also reading Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia-Marquez and How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America by Clint Smith, which ties in nicely with a book I've recently finished called Tales from the Haunted South: Dark Tourism and Memories of Slavery from the Civil War Era by Tiya Miles.

Molly, who's mildly autistic, loves her job as a maid at a posh hotel. Then Molly finds a dead body in the penthouse and her life is thrown into an uproar.
Fun and engaging. 4 stars

Crime novel/sci-fi thriller taking place in a world where superheroes exist. Walschots has taken a well-known and loved idea and turned it on its head. Completely original. Don't feel bad, I couldn't figure out what "hench" meant either until page 8. Certainly not perfect but something completely different. 5 stars.
I've finally finished There's Trouble Brewing. It starts and ends well, but every bit of thought process, every possible time table is outlined here, both on the part of Nigel Strangeways, amateur detecitve and the actual inspector involved in the murder case. I don't know that I'd recommend it, but I did love the book that comes after this one in the series, The Beast Must Die.

I've read one or two of the Strangeways mysteries but it was a long time ago. As I recall they were ok. I do have a couple more to try.
