In this 20th book in 'The Cat Who' cozy mystery series, newspaper columnist/amateur sleuth Jim Qwilleran helps solve crimes involving arson, theft, and more. The book works fine as a standalone.

Good cozy. 3 stars

Bryant and May #3, OK to read as a stand-alone. The PCU is tracking down multiple strange murders (eg. a man killed by snakebite in the lobby of the Savoy hotel) in London 1973. Another wonderful story of the Peculiar Crimes Unit, up until the ending which was rather over the top. Otherwise would have been 4 stars but I am only giving 3. The series is recommended to those liking English mysteries with a bit of humor.

The things you didn't care for, I did, but then I've enjoyed the supernatural and weird science in fiction since I stumbled on Robert Bloch as a kid -- well, his work, not him personally. :)

Wasn't a fan of that book either, but that's because she gave away the show very early on. I really don't like when that happens, actually, which is also why I gave Laura by Vera Caspary four instead of five stars.

Liz wrote: "Really, I want to be surprised!"

I was a little bit -- I wasn't entirely expecting the weird science turn nor how neatly Moreno-Garcia folded in fairy tales. But mostly I went in aware that it was Gothic/weird fiction with the potential for pulpy horror, and I thought it worked quite well.

I wouldn't put it on the level of The Haunting of Hill House but as a work interrogating the relationship between Latin America and the Western countries exploiting it, and as a coming-of-age novel with a strong protagonist, I was thoroughly entertained. But then I enjoy a great many horror stories and there are essentially two types of those: The ones whose endings surprise you, and the ones whose endings you see coming but you can't get out of the way.

This book is a modern take on 'The Stepford Wives' a book by Ira Levin that has spawned two movies.

Alpha bots takes place in 'New Stepford', where all the women are AI androids, purchased by men to fulfill their needs. But these gals aren't going to take it.

If you're looking for something new, you might want to give this book a try.

Araych | 676 comments The Mystery of the Blue Train The Mystery of the Blue Train (Hercule Poirot, #6) by Agatha Christie by Agatha Christie

Hercule Poirot #6, OK to read as a stand-alone. Not one of Agie's best. Poirot doesn't appear until about 60 pages in which is almost a quarter of the book. Which is too bad because Hercy is the reason we read the books. And when M. Poirot gives us the solution he gives no proof at all -- if the miscreants would have denied everything they could have walked away. 3 stars, far from the best in the series.

OK to read as a stand-alone but some familiarity with the characters would be helpful. Super-rich Windsor Lockwood explores the aftermath of a family tragedy and a political bombing. This book is a huge goof. Fun to read, bangs right along but it's just silly. Read it but don't think about it.

I've been reading a lot but I haven't been in the right mental space for posting for quite a while. Hopefully that's all about over and I can get back to it. I've recently finished reading (not crime) At Night All Blood is Black by David Diop, set in Africa during WWI. Chilling is the best word to describe it. I'm also currently reading (again not crime) Nella Larsen's Passing for my real-world book group read this month.

I'm still not getting group notifications emails except for one bunch, only once in the morning. Come Wednesday it will have been three weeks. I plan on unleashing the wrath of Khan come Wednesday on goodreads support.
