Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9970 comments Spin Spin (Captain Chase #2) by Patricia Cornwell by Patricia Cornwell

This second book in the 'Captain Chase' series opens soon after the dramatic conclusion of the first novel Quantum. The stories should be read in order.
Chase is a NASA scientist and investigator who's tasked with taking down an evil woman.

Good story but too much tech talk. 3 stars

I really, REALLY hate the new GR book page format. The old one was so easy to use and you could go right to the edition of the book you'd actually read. Plus, editing your post was so much simpler -- I discovered today after trying to figure things out that I had to click the date to make a quick revision.

Anyway, decided to skip the reread of Double Indemnity and go straight to Laura by Vera Caspary.

I'm looking forward to it. And I managed to be able to leave the beta version of the GR book pages, so I'm back to normal here.

The last book I read was SHIVER and it was really good! By Allie Reynolds- I would recommend as it was a classic mystery with a cool snowy setting and romance subplot. Any questions let me know 🙃

Click on any book, and at the top of the page you should see an option to try out the beta version. It looks slick but in my opinion, the new design loses a lot of functionality.

I'm not crazy about it either. I had to change search engines just to use it properly since Internet Explorer gets error messages when I enter the name of a book. (It looks a lot like the Barnes and Noble online style; maybe that's where they got the idea.)

Woman Reading (is away exploring) | 286 comments The Looking Glass War by John le Carré The Looking Glass War #4. In the Introduction, John le Carré explained his motivation for writing this installment the way that he had, which was helpful. For those who didn't benefit from that, The Looking Glass War would be really confusing. How could such an incompetent sister service such as the Department still exist to flail about like it did here? Surely all of the British agencies were as adept as their Circus?

I finished reading Laura by Vera Caspary late yesterday, then watched the film. The book I loved, the movie was not nearly as good.

message 485: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 2551 comments Finished the 4 book omnibus of The Jake Grafton Collection: The Intruders, The Minotaur, Under Siege, and The Red Horseman by Stephen Coonts. This set was not really my cup of tea as there was far too much technical detail of every airplane and how to fly them plus parts of the books were highly unlikely (Castro was not killed during an uprising in Cuba, a Russian general did not kill Saddam Hussein at the instigation of an American Navy Rear Admiral and there wasn't a second explosion of a large Russian nuclear plant in Russia. It was also a bit too right wing, "Commies and Muslims are bad" in theme.

Araych | 676 comments Germania Germania by Harald Gilbers by Harald Gilbers

Police procedural Berlin 1944. A Jewish ex-police detective ( no Jewish cops in Berlin 1944) is recalled to duty to find a serial killer. The plot, the characters, the setting are all fine but the book comes out second to the Bernie Gunther series set in the same milieu. 3 stars.

There was just too much of the human factor missing in the film that the book does so very very well. I'll be posting about it likely tomorrow.

There's one particular scene in this book that tells you everything you need to know about the killer long before the person's identity is revealed (and also who that person is just from what the scene reveals). That would have made for quality screen time but sadly it wasn't included.

I love the film, but perhaps that is because I find Gene Tierney so compelling to watch. The film has a very noir feel, which I am not sure that the book shares. I generally feel that the book is almost always better than the movie, with a few exceptions.
