Meredith | 1775 comments I've had a lot of fun this year and made progress and even finished several series. This challenge was good motivation. I have just one more to read (Trilogy) to finish the bingo board. I've acquired all the bonus emojis (and many, many ladybugs).

So, what I'm saying is I would probably join in again next year. :)

Llyren | 37 comments Oh yes, please!
It was so much fun this year!

message 303: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments I haven't finished many series, I can only check 4 squares (but 3 form a diagonal line!🐱‍👓) on the board - Debut author - Favorite Author - Trilogy - and Science Fiction (although I found out that there is now a third book coming!). These are the books I pledged. The checked ones I've finished. Unfortunately, I didn't get a whole lot of lovely little emojis as rewards, because it seems, the covers (mostly) were not up to snuff!

That said, I consider this challenge a success, because it did motivate me to make progress on some of the series I'd started reading books I already own. I may or may not manage one more in December. Which one will it be??

Here's my list:

✅A Memory Called Empire🕵️‍♂️
✅A Desolation Called Peace💕

message 307: by Leticia (last edited Dec 06, 2021 11:26PM) (new)

Leticia (leticiatoraci) @DivaDiane

I think that it doesn't matter if we did many squares or not, what matters is that we managed to complete some series. That is in itself a great achievement!

I also see that you didn't pick The Starfarers Quartet. I want to do this too and didn't pick it this year. Perhaps we can br it in 2022?

message 308: by Leticia (last edited Dec 07, 2021 12:40AM) (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Wow! That’s fantastic, Leticia! Yes, let’s BR Starfarers. I don’t know what the problem is, with that series. I’ve had it on my TBR and various challenges and have never been in the mood to actually read it!

message 310: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Well done, Beth!!

message 311: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments Thanks, Diane!

Now that others have posted more details, I feel like I ought to as well.

First, the
Wall of Shame: 5
Started a series this year. Four of them were SFFBC BOTMs which contributed toward another goal, so I don't feel that bad about these.

The Witcher: The Last Wish
So I'm a Spider, So What?: So I'm a Spider, So What?, Vol. 1 (and 3 more)
Between Earth and Sky: Black Sun (this is the only volume of this series out so far, so I'm also caught up?)
Steerswoman: The Steerswoman
LotR: The Fellowship of the Ring

The March of Progress: 7
(continued a previously started series)
I'll include the year I read the previous volume, just for fun.

2018 Los Nefilim: Where Oblivion Lives
2020 Discworld: Pyramids
2020 Elantra: Cast in Fury, The Emperor's Wolves
2020 Murderbot: Exit Strategy, Network Effect
2016 Merry Gentry: A Stroke of Midnight

I'll be doing a personal challenge along these lines next year, focusing harder on series I was enjoying but somehow set aside for five years or longer. Among them are Dreamblood Chronicles, Deverry, Dragon Prince, Women of the Otherworld....

message 312: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Oh Beth! Is that Melanie Rawn’s Dragon Prince? I have been meaning to continue that series for 20 years, I think! At this point I think I would need to reread the first one before continuing on. Maybe we could Buddy read?

message 313: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments That's the one, Diane! It's been over six years since I read the first one, and I can remember only the most dramatic of the things that happened in those 500+ pages, myself. I like the idea of a BR so let's revisit the idea after the New Year, since the holiday season is always a mess for me mentally and/or schedule-wise.

message 314: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Oh yes! I couldn’t possibly start before next year. Glad to have found a Buddy!

message 315: by Tamara (last edited Dec 11, 2021 01:59AM) (new)

Tamara | 271 comments I agree on the usefulness of this challenge - that it motivated me to keep going on some series that I might have put off, and it feels good to have completed them. I can't attach my bingo card (can you attach images here?), but have completed...

Favourite author (Stephen Lawhead, Eirlandia)
Fantasy (Juliet Marillier, Warrior Bards)
Science Fiction (Brandon Sanderson, Skyward - have read both of the 3 books that are out)

I'm almost finished with:
Debut/New-to-you author / Longer series (Genevieve Cogman, The Invisible Library) - 1 more book to go, which I have in my library stack and will read after 'Ariadne'. Can't decide which category to put it in, though.

I could probably also finish the Trilogy category if I wanted to (Stephen Lawhead, The Dragon King Saga - an old one I had around, re-read), but am not hugely motivated - definitely prefer new stories to old ones.

This will mean getting both astro 🐱‍🏍 and hipster 🐱‍🚀

I'd also like to do this again next year, or perhaps just continue.
I also started some new series, because so many nice books around!

message 316: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Barringer (Ravenmount) (ravenmount) | 75 comments This looks fun. I won't bother to tally up the series I read this year before I joined, but hopefully this (or something similar) will happen again for 2022 so I can play. :) I love series, though I can't stand reading them out of order. I know I have quite a few in the fantasy/sci-fi genre that have been lurking on my shelves for a while.

message 317: by Roo (new)

Roo (capernex) | 38 comments I did it! Complete bingo, complete prompts. I'm very proud of myself for actually finishing all these series, and I'm happy this challenge pushed me to do so. Out of the nine squares, 5 were series I had started before this year, and 4 were ones that I started and finished this year! 🏆🏅🥇

My cats tied! So they can share the trophy. (Poor hipster cat gets a participation medal, he tried his best)
🐱‍👤 ^🏆^ 🐱‍🚀 (🐱‍👓😓)

Eva | 968 comments Awesome!! 🤩

Congrats, dear Roo! 🎉✨🎇👏

And also congratulations to everyone who's participated and I'm happy the challenge helped you make progress in your unfinished-series-pile. 🥰

New 2022 challenge coming very soon!

message 319: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments Awesome, Eva! Thanks for coming up with this. I was pretty lazy about it all things considered, but it was fun, especially with all the emoji. 💖 I've come up with a personal series challenge for myself for next year, but that can easily be modified to follow yours.

message 320: by Eva (new)

Eva | 968 comments What's your own challenge? Maybe your prompts will give me more fresh ideas for next year's?

message 321: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments I sent you a message with the info!

message 322: by Aga (new)

Aga | 1066 comments Hah, I did it! I have one bingo :)

I've finished "White Sand" and needed to make a change between two boxes. My Genere-Bender box was a Polish urban fantasy for kids series written by my high school friend. And she wrote one more book in this series. Unfortunately, I'm not able to get the copy and read it before the end of the year. So I can cross that box with the "The Broken Earth" series.

Now I have to check the emotes.

Fantasy:

"White Sand" - completed by reading "White Sand vol 3."
Sand is a weapon here 🔪. People on the cover 💃, a couple is involved 💕, a hot environment 🔥.

Sci-Fi:

"Murderbot Diaries": I've read the whole series this year.
1) All Systems Red
------------------------
2) Artificial Condition
3) Rogue Protocol
4) Exit Strategy
4.5) Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory
5) Network Effect
6) Fugitive Telemetry

I'll sum up icons: 🔪, 💃, 🌺,✨,🕵🏻‍♂️,💕 and 🛸.

Genre- Bender:

"The Broken Earth" (the whole series).

1) The Fifth Season
-----------------------
2) The Obelisk Gate
3) The Stone Sky

The only icons I can think of here is 💕

And 🐱‍👤 for a single bingo row :)

I'm looking forward to joining next year's bingo!

message 323: by Nicol (new)

Nicol | 505 comments I finished and forgot to come here post it! I was waiting for Leviathan Falls to come out.

I did all the squares:

New To You: The Expanse - I read all the books and short stories available and completed 👽 🔥🛸 ✨ with that series

Genre Bender: Thursday Next - So sad this series is over

Triology: The Folk of the Air and completed ❄ 🪱

Quartet: Wayfarers, love Becky Chambers

Science Fiction: Murderbot, pretty funny and good shorts

Debut Author: Inheritance Triology, love N.K. Jemisin

Longer Series: Harry Dresden, guilty pleasure and completed 🔪🧛🏾‍♂️👻🦄 🕵️‍♂️ 💃

Favorite Author: Wayward Children by Seanan McGuire

Fantasy: Hound Sage and Wizards of Once where I completed 🐉 which was the hardest for me to complete and that's why I did two for that square

message 324: by Eva (new)

Eva | 968 comments Great job, guys! 👍

message 325: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments I didn't finish the bingo card, because I took up two rather long series (10 and 14 books with tomes), so here is my end result for 2021:

- ETA ... now that I started going through my read list I see that I actually have finished a lot more series than I thought I had, so I did manage two columns (the 1st and the 3rd) and the two diagonals

Favourite Author: Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson (read books 1-3)

Debut Author: Shadows of the Apt series by Adrian Tchaikovsky (read books 2 - 10)

Science Fiction: MaddAddam trilogy by Margaret Atwood (read books 1 -3)
Commonwealth Saga by Peter Hamilton (read book 2)

Genre Bender: The Gameshouse Trilogy by Claire North (read books 1 - 3)

Fantasy: Annals of the Western Shore by Ursula K LeGuin (read books 1-3)

Longer Series: The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson (read books 1-14)

2 columns and 2 diagonals gives me 🐱‍🚀🐱‍🚀🐱‍👓🐱‍👓

Bonus Challenge:

- Dragon on the cover: The Dragon reborn 🐉
- Weapon on the cover: The Path of Daggers 🔪
- Person on the cover: Lord of Chaos 💃
- Landscape on the cover: The Great Hunt 🌺
- Stars or Planets on the cover: A Crown of Swords ✨
- Fantastical creature on the cover: Seal of the Worm 🦄
- Real Animal name on the cover: Dragonfly falling (can't find a dragonfly emoticon)
- murder investigation: ???? (that's the one I didn't get)
- alien/vampire/zombie/ghost: Cytonic 👽
- love story: Salute the Dark 💕
- space travel: Judas Unchained 🛸
- very cold environment: Heart of Winter ❄

Thanks a lot for hosting this challenge, Eva! It was great fun!

Leticia (leticiatoraci) Congrats, you were really successful there Gabi! I'm curious about which series you will pick up next year.

message 327: by Ryan, Your favourite moderators favourite moderator (new)

Ryan | 1746 comments Mod
Gabi, A Memory Called Empire is a murder investigation and you read that this year. So is Touch. You got that!

message 328: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments Thanks, Leticia. I will he musing about that in the other thread (and then most probably not reading anything I have planned)

@Ryan: Empire is the first in a series and doesn't count for this challenge and Touch isn't part of a series.

message 329: by Ryan, Your favourite moderators favourite moderator (new)

Ryan | 1746 comments Mod
Touch kind of is part of a series as North said that they're all in the same universe and her most recent release has references to all her previous works. So feel free to claim that emoji. Touch would be the second book after First Fifteen Lives.

Turns out I've managed to complete FIFTEEN series this year. I'll do a proper update before the year is out.

message 330: by Meredith (last edited Dec 30, 2021 07:58AM) (new)
