Rachel | 3524 comments Please post any comments/updates/questions about the challenge in this thread. :)

The Winter 2020/2021 Reading Challenge starts December 7th and ends February 28th.

Rules of the challenge:

Read 3 books (or more)
Complete 3 tasks (or more)
Any genre ok
Rereads ok

This Winter, complete 3 (or more) of the following:

1. Many talented authors celebrate birthdays this season.

SO THIS WINTER, READ A BOOK BY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

Kate Atkinson-Dec. 20th
Victor LaValle-Feb. 3rd
Keigo Higashino-Feb. 4th
Jacqueline Woodson-Feb. 12th

2. February is goat yoga month. Do some yoga and hang out with goats-can’t make this stuff up. Apparently it’s quite popular.

SO THIS WINTER, READ A BOOK WITH THE LETTERS G-O-A-T IN THE TITLE/SUBTITLE

3. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is in limited release in theaters but will premiere on Netflix on December 18th. It’s set in 1920’s Chicago and is about Ma Rainey known as “Mother of the Blues” fighting for control of her music. Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman star. It’s adapted from August Wilson’s play.

SO THIS WINTER, COMPLETE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

READ A PLAY BY AUGUST WILSON
OR
READ A BOOK (SET AT LEAST IN PART) IN CHICAGO
OR
READ A MUSICIAN’S MEMOIR/BIOGRAPHY

4. News of the World will be released in theaters on December 25th. Captain Kidd gives audiences live readings about the news of the world in 1870. He’s then asked to deliver a young orphan to her relatives. They embark on a long and sometimes dangerous journey. Tom Hanks stars.

SO THIS WINTER, COMPLETE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

READ THE BOOK
OR
READ ANY BOOK SET (AT LEAST IN PART) IN THE 1800’s
OR
READ ANY BOOK THAT FEATURES A CHARACTER GOING ON A LONG JOURNEY/TRIP

5. The Dry will premiere in theaters in Australia on January 1st. Federal Agent Aaron Falk reluctantly finds himself back in his hometown after many years away. Of course, not everyone is happy to see him. He has both a past and present mystery to solve. Eric Bana stars. It’s adapted from a novel by Jane Harper.

SO THIS WINTER, COMPLETE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

READ ANY BOOK BY JANE HARPER
OR
READ ANY BOOK THAT FEATURES A CHARACTER RETURNING “HOME” AFTER MANY YEARS AWAY.

6. Winter = Long Nights. Why not read a book with night in the title?

SO THIS WINTER, PARTICIPATE IN THE GROUP READ OF THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY BY MATT HAIG.

7. Random task-This counts towards the challenge but is not inspired by the season.
2020 has been a difficult year, obviously. We also lost a trailblazer when Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died earlier this year. She accomplished much and is especially known for how she fought against gender discrimination.

SO THIS WINTER, COMPLETE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

READ A BOOK ABOUT RBG
OR
READ ANY BOOK THAT FEATURES AN INDIVIDUAL FIGHTING TO MAKE THE WORLD A MORE FAIR PLACE.

HAVE A HAPPY & SAFE WINTER, EVERYONE! :)

Rachel | 3524 comments Just a heads up about the group read-

It does deal with depression and suicidal thoughts (and possibly an attempt ).
I have heard it described as uplifting so I believe the ultimate message will be hope and second chances but just wanted to put that out there.

Janet (janetm2956) | 93 comments Woohoo! I'm so glad this showed up today, as I have to leave for South Dakota tomorrow....AND I happen to have a Jane Harper on audio! So excited to get started on this challenge! I hope it's ok to start a few days early?

This is a pretty laid back challenge. So enjoy the Harper book and have a safe trip.

Christine | 798 comments Love, love, love this challenge! RBG is my hero. My daughter in law just designed the coolest RBG hoodie for me. I wear it all the time. A lot of these tasks fit with books already on my shelves.

I highly recommend News of the World especially in audio form. I've listened to it twice and read it once. Its on my all time favorite list. Tom Hanks is perfect casting.

I'm also excited to read The Midnight Library Thanks for the heads up on topic. I see it won Best Fiction.

Thank you Rachel!!!!!!

Thanks for the recommendation. I would have passed over this otherwise. I'll see if it's available from the library.

lol That’s true.

That said, there are several goats on everyone’s shelves-I always check before selecting a letter task. Happy Reading! :)

Janet (janetm2956) | 93 comments Home from South Dakota and settling down to update my current reader planner and setup next year's. Also got a GOOD start with the challenge...picked through my TBR shelves and took several with me. Set my goal at 8 books, might update that if I go GOAT crazy!

Started listening to The Survivors by Jane Harper while driving. I have about 3 hours left, enjoying it. Read It Was Me All Along by Andie Mitchell for a GOAT (I have a TON OF GOATs in my queue). Read We All Fall Down (Michael Kelly, #4) by Michael Harvey for a book that takes place in Chicago. Currently reading The March by E.L. Doctorow for characters on a long journey (it could also work for a book set in the 1800's). I plan on reading David Copperfield by Charles Dickens for a book set in the 1800's (which will help me towards a personal goal of reading a couple of classics each year).

Looking forward to the group read of The Midnight Library by Matt Haig and I've heard good things about Jacqueline Woodson's Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson

I'll be purchasing those last two...so putting together my shopping list as we speak!

Happy Reading Everyone!

I’m a big fan of Jacqueline Woodson. I really enjoyed Red at the Bone Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson on audio-there’s a full cast. Look forward to your thoughts.

I’m also really looking forward to The Midnight Library The Midnight Library by Matt Haig -have heard good things about it.

Happy Reading! :D

Heck! How do we fix that?

I'm bummed, went to 2 different book stores today - both were sold out of The Midnight Library. Will go on a phone hunt tomorrow.

Christine | 798 comments I started The Duke and I (Bridgertons, #1) by Julia Quinn , it counts for a book set in the 1800s. Its also what the new series Bridgerton is based on which starts on 12/25 on Netflix. I'm a fan of the Regency time period and Shonda Rhimes, should be interesting.

I keep seeing 4 people but it doesn’t show me her name for some reason -just my friends that are participating. I sent her a friend request to see if that fixes it. In the past I’ve always been able to see anyone who has signed up whether we were friends or not.

The first book I've read toward the challenge is Promise Not to Tell by Jennifer McMahon. In this story a character returns home after many years away. I was introduced to reading the author through one of our previous reading challenges. I haven't written my review on goodreads yet, but soon.

message 35: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments I finished The Duke and I It fits for a book set in the 1800s. Like most romances, fairly predictable. The women characters are stronger than the ones in romances I read, say 30 years ago, definitely more in charge of their destiny than they used to be, lol. I doubt I will read any more of the series but I will definitely watch the TV series.

Merry Christmas everyone! Stay safe and healthy!

message 38: by Janet (new)

Janet (janetm2956) | 93 comments Hope everyone had a great Christmas! Ours was strange, to say the least, but that's OK...next year will be better! Since no one came to the house this year, I didn't even decorate.

I just finished reading Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson by Jacqueline Woodson and am going to have to take a break and enjoy my book hangover. Wow! I feel so grateful to have read this beautiful, gem of a book for my last read of 2020. This author is a gifted storyteller, and this book about dashed expectations, the costs of parenthood, and mother/child relationships is one I would highly recommend.

I'll definitely be picking up more of her books...I swear this group is costing me more than the PopSugar challenge! (not a bad thing at all).

My next read will be Black Sun (Between Earth and Sky, #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse for my bookclub. Then Midnight Library and David Copperfield for this challenge. Oops, that's only 7 and I set my goal at 8. I might just have to throw in a teensy GOAT that's on my TBR Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh is super short...I can do it!

Thanks, Rachel, for having Jacqueline Woodson the birthday list!!!

I just picked up my copy of Red at the Bone today from Boulder Public Library, so I'll be starting that one within the week :-) Glad to hear good things. I've only read one other Jacqueline Woodson before and I remember enjoying it.
Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson

I've increased my Winter Challenge to 15.

PopSugar is an annual challenge with 50 prompts (40 regular and 10 advanced). This was my second year trying to do it and I completed it for the first time. I have been picking out books for next year's...as many as I can from those I already own as possible. There is both a facebook and goodreads group that help with picking books that fit prompts. I do it just to broaden my reading...before my bookclub and this group and now popsugar ==> I primarily read thrillers. I LOVE Rachel's challenges because they are lowkey and we pick our own numbers, AND she's introduced me to so many new authors!

PopSugar is a bit more stressful...if you get obsessed! hahaha You read fast and alot...so you might like it!

Here's a link..hope it works: https://www.popsugar.com/entertainmen...

That challenge seems a bit complicated. I prefer simplicity so I probably won't get into the PopSugar Challenge, still interesting to know.

I started reading Red At The Bone this morning.
Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson

message 42: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments I read Fortune and Glory (Stephanie Plum, #27) by Janet Evanovich , from the Stephanie Plum series. Its my "goat", lol. I hadn't intended on this for my choice but it works. I keep saying I'm done with the series and then the new one comes out, and I read it. I'm just too loyal, lol.

Janet, Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh is a book I try to read every couple of years. Its an old favorite. I also try to do the Popsugar reading challenges and I've never finished one. They have interesting prompts.

I have four more books to finish by the end of year for my GR challenge. That's my plan for this quiet last week of 2020.
