From “the most popular mystery writer alive” (The New York Times), the twenty-seventh thrilling entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series isn’t just the biggest case of Stephanie Plum’s career. It’s the adventure of a lifetime.
When Stephanie’s beloved Grandma Mazur’s new husband died on their wedding night, the only thing he left her was a beat-up old easy chair…and the keys to a life-changing fortune.
But as Stephanie and Grandma Mazur search for Jimmy Rosolli’s treasure, they discover that they’re not the only ones on the hunt. Two dangerous enemies from the past stand in their way—along with a new adversary who’s even more formidable: Gabriela Rose, a dark-eyed beauty from Little Havana with a taste for designer clothes. She’s also a soldier of fortune, a gourmet cook, an expert in firearms and mixed martial arts—and someone who’s about to give Stephanie a real run for her money.
Stephanie may be in over her head, but she’s got two things that Gabriela doesn’t: an unbreakable bond with her family and a stubborn streak that will never let her quit.
She’ll need both to survive because this search for “fortune and glory” will turn into a desperate race against time with more on the line than ever before. Because even as she searches for the treasure and fights to protect her Grandma Mazur, her own deepest feelings will be tested—as Stephanie could finally be forced to choose between Joe Morelli and Ranger.
Janet Evanovich is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Stephanie Plum series, the Lizzy and Diesel series, twelve romance novels, the Alexandra Barnaby novels and Trouble Maker graphic novel, and How I Write: Secrets of a Bestselling Author, as well as the Fox and O'Hare series with co-author Lee Goldberg.
It’s good to be back to Ms Plum’s action packed, heart throbbing, ultra exciting and entertaining world! I’m so pleased to see my advance reader’s copy waiting for me at my mailbox! So many thanks to dear Ariele Fredman!
Not so many things have changed in Stephanie Plum’s world:
She is still stubborn, determined, badass and loyal to her family, stuck between two charming guys ( after 27 books we think she will make a decision! Nope, even as a reader I already switched sides between Ranger and Morelli at least for five times! Of course she cannot choose between them. She has to get two of them: all or nothing!)
A quick confession: I missed some of the books of the series because of my laziness, grass fed tbr monster’s uncontrollable blooming and unfortunate movie adaptation ( I still cannot believe producers chose Katherine Heigl as Ms. Plum! Of course the adaptation was box office disaster! And it literally damaged my visual image about Stephanie after all those freaking years later! ) so I read the summarizes of the previous books to catch up quickly and here we go: I’m all set, energized and excited to return back to Plum universe!
Yes, Stephanie’s poor grandma is a widow again: Grandma Mazur looses her husband on wedding night, inherits a beat up chair and a keys to a world changing fortune! And this makes grandma and Stephanie treasure hunters! Good luck girls! Because there are vicious, extremely dangerous adversaries out there trying to break your bones into pieces!
This book is one of the darker, more head spinning, more action packed story of the series. It introduces us brand new characters: George: a new neurotic, geeky, genius sidekick for Stephanie and a multi skilled assassin: Latina ninja meets Rachel Ray named Gabriela Rose who strikes a pose, walking at the red carpet in her very stylish designer clothes you’d die to find at poshmark! She’ll get her own book in near future. I can feel it. By the way is she dating with Morelli? Stephanie should pick her dreamy guy sooner because this Latina beauty could get him out of her hands without thinking any further!
Hmmmmmmm (this reaction doesn’t connect with the book. I just take one spoon from my Magnolia Bakery’s banana pudding: this is the best treatment to recover from this book’s compelling, nail biting chapters with full of action! )
Again I’m giving my eulogy for the cars of the book which were mercilessly destroyed (I think in this series: more cars destroyed than entire Fast and Furious installment) and let’s not forget Ranger’s 911 buildings which were blown up, too.
The high tension keeps building as Stephanie and grandma get closer to find the treasure and the dangerous follow them like their shadows!
I had a lot fun. I’m so happy to choose reading this book on my Friday night instead of watching bad Rebecca adaptation on Netflix (please watch Hitchcock’s version or read the fantastic book! )
I guess it’s good to be back! And as far as I can see even 27 books later the series can be so much better and keeps you in your toes. I’m giving my adventures, lots of laughs, full of action, enjoyable stars!
Again so many thanks to Atria Books and dear Ariele Fredman for sharing this special advance reader’s copy with me in exchange my honest review.
My reader's block has been cured by this book. Janet, my liege. Like in most long running series, new characters appear here too. But the author showed her experience by handling them well.
I'm getting a bit tired of Lula as a punching bag for comedy relief. She's the only one who cracks unfunny or funny but rehashed jokes.
I rated this book 4 stars. I liked the pacing of this book most of all. Stephanie Plum's life is no longer in limbo. Read to find out. This book might be the end of the entire series. I'm always demanding towards the books I read. It was fun while it lasted.
I wanted to love it.... but it just didn’t. It’s just always the same thing - and it feels tired. The same jokes, the same crazy characters, the same dilemma’s, the same back and forth between Ranger and Morelli, the same over the top fugitives.... hell the characters even eat the same foods. I realized with this book that I don’t really enjoy the series anymore. I read it for nostalgia (as I really loved it in the beginning) and want to know how it ultimately ends. I honestly don’t know if I’ll keep reading them....
In her time as a bounty hunter Stephanie Plum has never achieved great fortune nor amazing glory. Now she's on a treasure hunt with Grandma to hopefully, finally, score the ultimate success by finding the mysterious treasure secreted away by the La-Z-Boys. Will she able to put together the limited clues and survive kidnapping attempts and car mishaps?
I didn't find this one as good as others in the series; I found the middle slow without enough madcap excitement and I even missed the descriptions of Lula's flamboyant outfits and suggested food detours. There were some, but it seemed like an awfully long stretch where I wasn't reading about Lula's questionable fashion choices or her curious cravings.
I did enjoy Ranger's greater role, but it did come at the expense of less Morelli. I know some readers hate Stephanie's indecisiveness but I'd really like to see a book that really plays up the relationship triangle more. That's part of the appeal for many readers, being able to root for your personal favorite, yet still being able to see the appealing qualities in the other possibility. I think I know who I'd like her to choose, and I think Stephanie makes it clear who she will eventually choose, but like us readers, she too can waffle on her choice. A decision is final, a mark of maturity and responsibility that she just isn't quite ready to make. She wants to enjoy the carefree fun just a little bit longer and lucky for us readers, we get to vicariously experience both options, make our choice, and then 5 minutes later backtrack to the other. A fun, light-hearted read that offers an amusing distraction from our everyday mundane lives.
Fortune and Glory by Janet Evanovich is a 2020 Atria Books publication.
This 27th installment in the Stephanie Plum series, picks up where the last one left off in a continuing storyline that segues into a new series launch, featuring Gabriela Rose.
The mob is still after Stephanie and Grandma Mazur, and Stephanie and Morelli are off again. Ranger takes full advantage the situation and becomes Stephanie’s ‘go-to’ guy, instead of Morelli. As per usual, Stephanie goes through cars at breakneck speed, Lula provides comic relief, and the adventure never slows down from start to finish.
Stephanie does slow down long enough to take stock of her life a little- which might help her finally figure out which guy is the right one for her after years of indecision- or at least I hope so...
The last two installments in this series have been really good! Gabriela’s character will be featured in a new series, if I have my information correct. She was a little too shadowy here, but I’m looking forward to getting to know her a little better.
Overall, the series is still, and will always be at this stage, a little predictable- but that’s what we expect and it’s why we keep coming back for more of the zany, laugh out loud funny adventure of Stephanie Plum!
This was so disappointing. It's basically a re-hash of every other book. Cars blow up, Morelli is on and off and Ranger is in the romance mix, Lula has hair and clothing malfunctions and the plot is so full of holes you could drive a bus through. A new character is introduced who will get her own series, which makes no sense when the Lizzy and Diesel series is only half done. I guess I'm sick of the same plot in 27 books and would like some growth or closure. In my ideal world there would be a finale with two books - a Ranger ending and a Morelli ending. Then Janet can focus on her other series and write them herself.
Fortune and Glory, also known as Tantalizing Twenty-Seven, is the latest Stephanie Plum mystery novel by Janet Evanovich, published in November 2020. I've been a fan of this series from the beginning, reading them all at once during my initial introduction... but for the last decade reading them the week they're released. I always enjoy them, even if they can become slightly repetitive, and recommend them to others who like sarcastic humor and unbelievable situations that we wish could happen... maybe not the actual murders, but definitely all the hilarity.
Stephanie's grandmother married a man in the mob... in her eighties after Stephanie's grandpa died. Then he died too, and he left behind some La-Z-Boy chairs with secrets about a treasure. Stephanie agrees to find out where all 6 hidden clues are located, especially when 3 of the 6 men who held them are now dead. By the end of the book, more bite the dust, and Stephanie almost blows herself up at least 5 times. She also trudges through the underground tunnels of Trenton, encountering rats, bats, and crazy mafia folks. Oh, and I forgot... Morelli and Stephanie are on a break again, so things heat up with Ranger.
You'll experience all the same fun with Lulu, but Potts is a new character whom Stephanie has to apprehend when he skips bail. He's got a problem with pooping in public, and now, he refuses to go back to court. But when Stephanie saves him from certain death, he agrees to be her bodyguard, except he's often asleep or causing more problems. In the end, he does help her find the clues, and he provides immense comic relief. The mindset of Evanovich cannot be paralleled when it comes to humor and wit. I am already excited about the next book in 2021... and it looks like a new series / book with a supporting character (Gloria) that begins here is gonna kick off!
This is a Humor Cozy Mystery, and this is the 27th book in the Stephanie Plum series. I love the Plum series. I have misses Ranger in the last a couple of books before this one, and I am so happy Ranger is back in this book. I love the Grandma Mazur character. I found this book so funny and great. The characters like always is so good, and I love Janet's writing style. The plot in this book was good. Great book.
I think I've read all but one or two of the twenty seven books in the Stephanie Plum line and have enjoyed each one. This was no exception.
There's plenty of action, humor, and ka-boom!
With Stephanie and Joe's relationship on hiatus, Ranger plays a larger role plus there's a new man in Stephanie's life: a cling on side kick with some annoying habits.
Grandma and Lula are as fierce as ever plus another strong female character Gabriella. It appears that a new series has begun featuring Gabriella with a book excerpt at the back.
I was hoping that Gabriella and Stephanie would team up and work together. They made a good tandem and they could have opened their own Bond and Apprehension business. Maybe it's just me, but I would like to see Stephanie improve her life on her own without the aid of Ranger and Joe.
Thank you to my local library for the opportunity to read this!
I didn't find this one as funny as prior books, but it appears to have a new addition; Gabriela Rose. As always I love Lorelei King's performance with the audio for various characters, especially as Grandma and Lula. She adds so much to an okay story.
This long-running series has been my go-to for comfort reads for years. I have missed several of the more recent releases, but I’m happy to report that I was able to jump right in to Fortune and Glory and meet Stephanie where she was!
It felt good to be along for her foibles and escapades again. If you are a fan of this series, you are in for a treat, a good laugh, and maybe, finally the answer of who she’ll choose between Ranger and Morelli?!
We all go through difficulties in life, and at some of my most challenging moments, when I had to decide between reading and possibly nothing at all, I was able to pick up a Stephanie Plum book and laugh and feel soothed. That’s good stuff, and I’m grateful for books like this when we need them!
This is #27 in the series about Stephanie Plum, who is a bounty hunter (but not your stereotypical bounty hunter) and works for her uncle. The book is quirky, funny, and a great read for summer vacation.
Stephanie Plum has a sidekick named Lola who has lead a very interesting life before getting into bounty hunting. This book also involves Stephanie helping solve a mystery for her grandma, who is feisty and knows everyone's business. She manages to avoid getting shot, taken hostage by various bad characters in the story, and still manages to bring in her bounty.
She does have help from some well-connected friends in law enforcement, who save her skin multiple times. The antics during the bounty hunting are part of what makes this book so much fun to read. Add in the family dynamics and the drama that follows Stephanie everywhere, and it is great at keeping you curious as to what is going to happen next!
I have read most of the series now and have enjoyed all the books.
Find this book and other titles within our catalog.
A fairly decent mystery and adventure but the inclusion of the Gabriela Rose character really cheapens the story. The character added nothing to the narrative, wasn’t very interesting, and it felt like she was added as an afterthought only to be a lead in to a new series. If the character had been developed more over 2 or 3 three books it would have been much more appropriate instead of feeling like a blatant cash grab.
I love Stephanie Plum. This is one of my all-time favorite series. I don’t really care about the whole Ranger vs Morelli saga. I don’t think she should pick either. She doesn’t seem to really want to settle down, and neither do they. I just want her to have another goofy adventure with plenty of comedy thrown in.
You would think after all of these books I'd be getting tired of Stephanie Plum by now, but these are such enjoyable comfort reads for me. There's humor, there's a bit of mystery, and you just never know who Stephanie is going to be with romantically. I fully admit that I want Stephanie and Morelli to end up together, and this book wasn't one of my favorites for romance because they are "taking a break" and she does some dabbling with Ranger that we haven't seen for a while. There are cars to be destroyed, visitations and funerals to attend, meals to eat with the parents, and adventures with Grandma and Lula. A new mysterious woman appears... Overall, this was a fun read for this fall and fans of the series will enjoy their experience. Nothing new, but that's just fine with me.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.
Also titled ‘Tantalizing Twenty Seven’ Stephanie Plum returns with co-conspirators Lulu, Grandma, Connie, Ranger & Morelli (no Vincent in this one). Absolutely nothing new about this read except the version of the crime.
I know exactly what I’m getting into when I start an Evanovich - some good crass humour, unlikely events and characters; and a super quick read. No let downs in this area but I am really losing faith in Stephanie (and hamster Rex who has been running that same wheel for at least a decade now) - surely at some point she needs to stand on her own two feet and achieve something on her own.
Thanks to the publisher, via Edelweiss, for an advance e-galley for honest review.
I'm so disappointed, and I'm not sure if it's more in myself for believing that this one could be different, or in this book for taking all the high expectations I had based on the last book, on descriptions, and the title of this book and smashing them. This is the exact same stuff we've been reading for 26 previous books, reader friends. Stephanie ruins some cars, waffles between Ranger and Joe, picks up some of the most hapless criminals in written history and solves a larger mystery in between. I've been saying this for books and books but I truly think I can be done with this series at this point.
I always get a good chuckle when I read this series. I can usually finish the book in one day and it’s the best form of escapism, which we all know is essential these days. The characters are fantastic and memorable, especially grandma. She’s hysterical! The audiobook has the perfect narrator for this series.
I love this series. Fun, mindless reading. In this installment there are new quirky characters, car problems, Stephanie's hair issues, a search for hiiden treasure which grandma Mazur holds the secret to, and a little jealousy when Stephanie finds out Morelli is seeing someone else. In a nutshell it's everything you would expect from a Stephanie Plum novel!
This one ticks all my boxes for a Stephanie Plum adventure: Love triangle - check; multiple car casualties - check; Lula and Grandma Mazur in peak form - check; new quirky wingman - check; FTAs with unusual back stories - check; yummy food - check; and Stephanie being Stephanie - check. I don't know about you, but I flip flop back and forth between Team Joe and Team Ranger like an overcooked pancake. It's part of the fun, right? And Stephanie is still a hapless bounty hunter with plenty of tenacity and a ton of good luck. Even a professional treasure hunter gives her some props. Janet Evanovich is at the top of her game on this one, in my opinion. I had the good fortune of meeting her at an author event sponsored by my local library last year. Hearing her discuss her books has given my appreciation for the series a boost. Looking forward to seeing how the mysterious Gabriela Rose is developed in the final book of the trilogy and #28.
Thank you to Atria Books and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.
I need to start off by saying I am super annoyed that they changed the title format... there is absolutely no reason this book should be called Fortune and Glory. It is the 27th book in the Stephanie Plum series, period. "Don't stray from the formula!"
Aside from the above, I really enjoyed this book. Laughed out loud a lot, enjoyed Potts as a new character. I continue to be Team Ranger.
"Here it is. You think you know someone and then next thing they tell you is that they want a Chihuahua named Chardonnay."
I liked: (1) Stephanie gets a boy-fan bodyguard, who tries his best to protect her, (2) Ranger gets a turn this time, (3) a little more action in this one as Stephanie and Grandma Mazur search for Jimmy Rosolli's treasure is constantly under attach by Jimmy's buddies and their hired thugs, and (4) the mysterious Gabriela Rose, and what she seeks. I did not like: (1) less humor than normal, (2) not enough Lulu (which is probably partly responsible for less humor), (3) book title should be Tantalizing Twenty Seven (Fortune and Glory, gimme a break), and (4) weak ending.
With this book, #27 of the Stephanie Plum series, the alliterative titles that have signaled fun ahead are now demoted to subtitles (see cover). We know in our heart of hearts, though, that this is really Tantalizing Twenty-Seven, even if it's all about good guys (Stephanie and Grandma) and bad guys (Shine and Salgosta) in pursuit of, yes, fortune and glory.
And for Ranger fans, some good news if you've been regretting how few scenes he's had recently. The on-again off-again romance between Stephanie and Morelli is off again, and Ranger and his Rangerman special security team are major players in the plot this time. This is another way of saying that Stephanie destroys an unusually high number of Ranger's vehicles in her hair-raising escapades.
Grandma and Lula are enthusiastic participants with Stephanie in this adventure, and that's enough in itself to keep the rating at four stars with lots of hearty laughter from this reader. Stephanie's mission once again is to protect her maternal grandmother, now named Edna Rosolli thanks to a marriage that lasted 45 minutes before widowhood and that quest for her late husband's hidden treasure. They have no idea what it is, just that it's terribly valuable.
You see, the six elderly Trenton, New Jersey gangsters who were keeping the treasure as a sort of retirement fund arranged for Jimmy Rosolli to hide it because he was the only one of the six whom all the others trusted. In return for keeping the keys he gave each of them a clue, so that if he died they could put their clues together and find the fortune. And he kept a clue for himself, which is probably the combination to a booby-trapped safe.
As we know from the last book, Grandma got the keys by accident, so off they go looking for the clues while the remaining bad guys (Salgosta and Shine) bring in thugs to kidnap Stephanie and Grandma, torture them till they say where the treasure is (they don't believe Grandma doesn't know, but she has no idea), and then kill them of course. Grandma isn't going to quit the quest so Stephanie puts her life in danger over and over to protect her, and Ranger, whose feelings for Stephanie are usually expressed eloquently by saying, "Babe," invests a stupendous amount of material (I lost count of how many cars) and manpower to protect Stephanie or save her when protection fails.
We meet two new characters who should be fun in future books: (1) Potts, a middle-aged hypochondriac who becomes a devoted mascot to Stephanie and actually manages to help, but mostly gets in the way; and (2) Gabriela, depicted as a sort of female version of Ranger, whom Stephanie sees as a rival but we don't know till the end if she's a good guy or a bad guy. She is definitely independent if mysterious, and she fills a vacuum for readers who haven't felt Stephanie is enough of a bad-ass heroine. And it looks like she's getting her own series!
It's fast and lively throughout, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. For deep thoughts on the series and on Stephanie as sesquiamorous, here's a link to my review of the last book, Twisted Twenty-Six: click on https://www.goodreads.com/review/show.... And here's one more piece of wisdom from Grandma:
"I love you, too," Grandma said. "Maybe that's why God gave us death. So we remember to love what's alive."
For this review, I just copy and pasted my review from the previous book in this series. If the author can't change things up, I don't know why I should.
This installment in the Stephanie Plum series was just okay for me. Stephanie is still unfulfilled in life, love and employment. This hasn't changed much in the last several books. Lula was the same. Mom and Dad were the same. Morelli was the same. Ranger was the same. The only one a little different was Grandma and at this point, she is my favorite character. So 2 ho-hum stars for this one.

My Thoughts /
Fortune and Glory: Tantalizing Twenty-Seven continues the storyline that kicked off in Twisted Twenty-Six. Here's a quick recap: In Twisted Twenty-Six our favourite Bond Enforcement Agent finds herself entangled in a case involving our very own, Grandma Mazur. The gun carrying-funeral viewing-tracksuit wearing-bingo fanatic aka 'Grandma Mazur' became recently widowed when husband, Jimmy Rosolli suddenly passed away. But, like everything else that happens in this series, Jimmy's death is complicated.
Jimmy was a member of the La-Z-Boy Gang – a 'gang' that consisted of a group of six old boy individuals all with mafia related histories.
There is treasure - and with Jimmy's passing, Grandma Mazur and Stephanie learn that each of the La-Z-Boys held a unique clue to where the treasure is buried. All clues numbered and all six are needed in order to locate the treasure.
Stephanie Plum and Grandma Mazur are searching for Jimmy Rosolli's treasure, but they're not the only ones looking for it. On top of that, Stephanie is being followed by a woman that she thinks Morelli is dating. Oh and PS: The two are "off again" in #27.
As well as the treasure, Stephanie also has skips to track down for Vinnie’s Bail Bonds — one of whom decides that Stephanie needs a bodyguard and devotes himself to that. Sure, Stephanie could use a bodyguard, but probably not one who has a more than a handful of anxiety disorders.
I crossed the street and rang the Potts’ doorbell. A skinny guy with a large nose and mousey brown ponytail answered. “George?” I asked. “Oh jeez,” he said. “I know who you are. How did you find me?” “You gave this as your address,” I told him. “It’s on your bond application.” “Oh yeah. I forgot about that.” He stepped outside and closed the door behind him. “So, what’s up?” “You missed your court date. You have to reschedule.” “Did they tell you I have PTSD?” “No. Were you in the military?” “No. College. It was a bad trip.”
Our beloved cast of regular characters all make an appearance in #27 – even Rex. Now I'm not too sure what the lifespan of a hamster is, but Rex is still alive, running the treadmill and eating Froot Loops. At this rate Rex will outlive me!
If you follow my ramblings, you will know that I read this series for frivolity and giggles, but every now and again, you come across a lifetime gem such as this, which seriously surprises this reader. Just goes to show…..
“I love you,” I said to Grandma. “I love you, too,” Grandma said. “Maybe that’s why God gave us death. So, we remember to love what’s alive.”
Grandma’s late husband allegedly knew the last clue to locate something valuable that his elderly mobster cronies want, and they are determined to get the information, even though Grandma swears she hasn’t got it. Since these retired hitmen are, according to the locals, “batshit crazy,” they will stop at nothing, including firebombing, kidnapping, and murder. Two new characters are introduced: George, a neurotic nerdy sidekick for Stephanie, and Gabriela, an exotic woman of mystery who may or may not be dating Morelli. (It’s pretty clear that there will be a new series featuring Gabriela.) Does another car get blown up? Has Stephanie finally chosen one of two tempting men? You can probably guess! Thanks to the publisher and to Edelweiss for the ARC.
Not to crazy about the shake up. This is book 17, why change up the formula now?!? And maybe this is my bad, cause I just wanted the same old, same old...the story isn't bad and it's a decent enough mystery. But where is my slapstick humor? It missed those key points that make the Plum novels what they are. This follows the plot from the previous book as well which was odd to have an over-carrying plot. And some things were a bit too rushed, lacking the emotion that drives these stories.
