In Cold Pursuit: A Mystery from the Last Continent by Sarah Andrews is set in Antarctica.

Antarctica is my big lifetime wish too.
Among Penguins: A Bird Man in Antarctica is really good. It's non-fiction, and I admit I'm a little envious of him, being able to live and research birds (penguins on this trip) in Antarctica!

Burial Rites
The Glass Woman

I loved Burial Rites. I haven't read The Glass Woman yet.

Drakeryn | 708 comments This is basically a free space in bingo for me. Big bustling city with no covid? Yes please. Fantasy realm? A nice forest? Sure. I'm not picky, at this point I'd be excited to visit anywhere that's not my apartment and not a horrible dystopia.

I think all of Fiona Davis' books are set in NYC, they're historical fiction with dual timelines. I've really enjoyed all that I've read so far, and the newest one is set in the NY Library.

So this series is all set in Boston. The Surgeon by Tess Gerritsen I used this book for medical thriller this year and enjoyed it.

Ohhhh Thank you, i had a lot of NYC ideas, but not Boston :) I'll look it up!

If you enjoy YA, How To Hang A Witch is good!

Jenni (jennigray) | 29 comments Erica wrote: "Yeah don't like this prompt. How bout a book about a family/chosen family because who doesn't want to be able to safely see their family right now?

Or how about anything set before 2020."

I'd really not want to see the prompt worded that way because it reminds me that I haven't seen mine for a very long time. I couldn't afford to travel to see them prior to the pandemic, so its been 2 years and counting now. At least with the 'place you'd like to visit', its vague enough to cover pretty much everywhere in the world, including trips to see family for those that want to read it that way.

Jenni (jennigray) | 29 comments I've become absolutely fascinated by Spain since I visited it a couple of years back, so I've got a few books on the history of the country to read through (not all 'happy' books though):

A Concise History of Spain (audiobook)

The Spanish Civil War: Reaction, Revolution And Revenge

The Spanish Holocaust: Inquisition and Extermination in Twentieth-Century Spain

Spain: The Centre of the World 1519-1682

I second that suggestion. I really enjoyed How to Hang a Witch and it's sequel, Haunting the Deep.

Right!? Maybe an "inner trip" to the world of a favorite fantasy author?

I'm choosing Blood Heir. A companion to the Kate Daniels world.

JessicaMHR | 583 comments Lilia wrote: "Does anyone know of books that take place in National Parks?"

Here's some I just found set in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Murder at Volcano House by Chip Hughes. I personally haven't read it but it has good reviews and I have heard of his other book Murder on Molokai which is supposed to be good.

Another couple are Volcano House, and Hilina Pali by J.L. Oakley. Also haven't read these.

Just figured I'd promote a few authors from my state. :)

message 67: by Paula (new)

Paula | 34 comments Many Nevada Barr books take place in National Parks

message 68: by Rachael (new)

Rachael | 136 comments I cheated. The prompt didn't say it had to be a place I could realistically visit, just that I'd like to, so I picked a book set in the Star Wars universe

message 69: by Meagan (new)

Meagan | 44 comments @Rachael I was going to do the exact same thing! just not specifically star wars but I was totally going to pick a book about space.

message 70: by JessicaMHR (new)

JessicaMHR | 583 comments I rechecked my kindle books and realized I have the perfect book for this prompt The Tenth Island: Finding Joy, Beauty, and Unexpected Love in the Azores by Diana Marcum. It is a memoir set in the Azores a place I have ALWAYS wanted to visit since my great grandparents came from here.

Books I've read set in Florida that I liked a lot:
Cocoa Beach by Beatriz Williams
Fathom by Cherie Priest
The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead
Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

and part of The True Meaning of Smekday is set in Disney World, but most of the book is not in Florida.

Two books I've read set in Florida that I did NOT like:
Island Affair by Priscilla Oliveras
Swamplandia! by Karen Russell

A book set in the Bahamas that I liked:
The Golden Hour by Beatriz Williams

A book set in the Bahamas that I want to read, and will get to someday (but it's a picture book, and it's hard to find):
Five Little Potcakes: A Caribbean Story - this was printed as a fund raiser for the rescue groups that rehome the stray dogs in the Bahamas known as "Potcakes" because long ago the hungry stray dogs would hang around people cooking rice & peas in their big pots, and they would flip the cooked-on bottom bits to the dogs. My dogs are Potcakes :-) They were born in the Bahamas, but I've never been there. So I'd be interested in other books set in the Bahamas, too!! I was a bit disappointed that The Golden Hour never mentioned stray dogs ...

And when I looked at https://www.goodreads.com/places/1145...
I was reminded of:
Anansi Boys
Darkly Dreaming Dexter
Their Eyes Were Watching God

message 76: by Kaia (new)

Kaia | 235 comments I just finished The Motorcycle Diaries: Notes on a Latin American Journey for this prompt. I know I'm not traveling anywhere this year, but I've always wanted to visit South America, and in a perfect world with no pandemic and where I had money to travel, it would be on my list. The book wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but it was an enjoyable read. I had to keep reminding myself that Che was in his early 20s when he wrote it, and some stupidity should be expected. It's been on my TBR list for a while, so glad to finally cross it off.

message 77: by G (new)

G I'm 1000% not traveling anywhere this year but if I could go anywhere, it would be to Puerto Rico. I'm gonna stretch the prompt a little bit at use War Against All Puerto Ricans: Revolution and Terror in America’s Colony because I've been meaning to read it for a while now; the book discusses Puerto Rico and US relations so it's technically not fully "set" in Puerto Rico but I think it can suit the prompt really well!

I was just wondering if there are any books set in vaccination clinics... :-) I seriously do not want to go much of anywhere this year, but I'm planning to read A Pairing to Die for, which is set in Boulder. That's just one county over. I can probably handle that.

It's a weird one, and written for kids, but I absolutely loved The True Meaning of Smekday. It's set in a variety of USA locations, including DisneyWorld.

And then there's this Listopia:
Fiction books set in Disney theme parks You'll have to filter out any books set in California.

and this List:
47 BOOKS SET IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA

I really enjoyed Malibu Rising, too.

We had the same general idea! I used a book set in Key West for this one. (Didn't like the book much ... but I'm sure I'd like a trip to Key West!)

Lilith (lilithp) | 1079 comments Confessions

Confessions. Wow! A lot of twists and turns in a very dark revenge tale. A middle school teacher avenges her daughter's death. And I loved every nanosecond of it.
Great writing, great plotting.

Fits dark academia perfectly!
But I'd really like to visit Japan. I don't think that money or time will be available in 2021, though.

I liked the sequel, but I have to say that I liked The Golem and the Jinni better. It's still got that love of NYC feeling to it.

The trip was great! I broke a bone in my foot about two months ago and am just starting to walk without an aircast again, and NYC definitely involves a lot of walking. I was sore and tired afterwards. But great food, got to see a Yankees game, the Yayoi Kusama installation at the Botanic Gardens, and also the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit, so we packed a lot in!
