If you would prefer a private invite, PM me your email address.
I'm now stoked to be able to do both. If it rains I will still doll up and wear blingy jewelry. So excited to see you guys.....
Does someone have a paid Zoom account so that we can stay on as long as we want? I don't remember who set these up in the past. I do have one, so let me know if you want me to do it.
Seems the paid accounts belong to Tessa, Theresa, Robin, and Me. So we are covered on that front. Looks like Tessa is taking it on.

Aha that's migraine brain--since it's the 18th and I saw 17, I didn't read more carefully! I have no idea what's going on then, but at least it's not the Saturday I have a wedding to attend.
How does everyone feel about playing a game when we do zoom?Literary scattergories or something like that.
Bumping this up. We have a Zoom planned for tis Saturday, August 17th. Here is Zoom Link. Check your Time Zone for start! 4 PM Eastern
3 PM Central
2 PM Mountain
1 PM Pacific
We will no doubt gab for hours.
I won't mind if someone decides to sing Happy Birthday to me 2 days early (It is Aug 19 officially).
Amy will be joining us from the pool!

I think I'll pass in case politics comes up :)I am inundated with it and prefer to set it aside in social situations that are more for relaxation and fun.
In the past, on these calls we each recommended a book we read recently. We could do that again if people are interested.
I think we can well decide to make sure politics doesn’t come up. You are not the only one who doesn’t care for it in that situation. I’m going to vote that right now because no one should feel excluded.
I do not believe politics belongs in a Zoom in this group any more than it is in Kaffeeklatsch or anywhere else in PBT. A comment or two could still pop up - hard not to if something attention getting happens - but not any kind of discussion. We have a rule in my stitching group - which is run as a private group on FB -- is that no politics and no sports can be discussed ever. Why sports you ask? We are a primarily NYC group so you have the Mets vs. Yankees impassioned fans. And god forbid the Red Sox enter the discussion - we have some ex-massachusetts residents who take offence or cast offence in Yankees vs. Red Sox. Some lesser conflicts would arise during figure skating season. My solution: banning all sports discussions of any kind.
Oh, no politics and no sports sounds like a win-win. I'm not big into sports but I do have a favourite hockey team.
That’s hilarious that you have to ban sports chat, Theresa! Whenever the talk turns to rugby in our stitching group, I just switch off. But at least we don’t have dire rivalries to manage. The Olympics chatter has been interesting though. My stitching group has exactly the same rule against talking about politics - a strict no-go zone because it makes people uncomfortable and makes them feel excluded or exhausted or both. Very sensible to rule it off the menu. It’s not like we don’t have plenty else to discuss!
LOL, KateNZ! It can get quite heated in my stitching group with the sports rivalries and lots of anger and hurt feelings. I'm quite adept at changing the subject or just shutting it down. I'm sure that does not surprise you.

The irony is that those who don't stitch would never think that there are avid stitchers who are that vested into sports, but it's one of many stereotypes about people :)
Ah but there are official Stitch in Public days at baseball games --- one of our members organizes them for the Orioles games in Baltimore. Knit in Public at baseball games is also a thing. Stitchers are also readers - lots of book talk allowed of course.
When I say stitchers, it includes any craft with fiber.

Aha, after I posted I remembered people who hook rugs and that people of all ilks knit/crochet. At first my mind was fixed on crewelwork and other forms of embroidery (no bias on my part whatsoever! I had a knitting phase, so should have known better.)
I always participate in the spring knit and crochet in public day. I don’t like the winter public day because I don’t like being outside all day going to different venues. I love audio books because I can knit, crochet and quilt while I listen, as long as the work in progress is not too complicated.

I am glad we are agreed on avoiding any issue that would potentially make any member feel unwelcome or excluded. That motion has clearly passed. I am sorry for my prior role in it when I have been caught to have been impassioned. But we have so much else to connect on, and our community is what is most important.
@Dosha - welcome, fellow needleworker! I do cross stitch and needlepoint mostly but my mother was a quilter and one of my sisters does a bunch of different needle and textile crafts. My NYC stitching group every summer has a Stitch in Public day at the Cloisters Museum, part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's outdoors but in a covered area so we can stitch even if it rains. It's the cloister where the cafe is set up so there are tables and available beverages and snacks (though ridiculously priced). It's next to the herb garden cloister.
Over the winter and spring, my hubby and are in his hometown of Rome, GA. This is where we knit in public in May. We travel to different stores with lobby’s and hang for an hour or so. We should buy a little something at each venue. While I am down there, I belong to and sip and stitch group and we meet every Tuesday at the Marriott hotel for two hours. It is a lot of fun. Summer and fall we are back in Boston, MA. We met and lived up here (my hometown) until we retired. Interestingly, I don’t have a group to knit or quilt with right now. I just turn on an audiobook and go for it! Hopefully, the folx down the street will start it back up again before we leave for GA at the end of November.

My dad grew up with the original six, and until the Canucks joined in what I think was the second expansion (I was born and mostly raised in BC) he was a Canadiens fan. I was only a kid, but didn't switch allegiances the way he did. It's silly, since now they'll only hire coaches who speak French even though most players don't know it, but they are still my team. However, I don't watch it or follow it. I still haven't seen a game with the "new" rules. I have been to live games.
I was at the Canucks game (with my Dad; not sure why I went, but probably because it was my turn or my hockey playing brothers couldn't go or something) the night that Bruins player Normand Léveillé suffered a brain aneurysm which left him unable to walk. He played only 1 season plus 1 month, but I remember when he was taken out. 1982.
My dad used to get 1/4 of of a pair of season tickets, his friend got 1/4 and a woman his friend knew went to half.

This weekend we are stitching in the apartment building garden of one of our members, it's located in Harlem. If there is rain, it will be in her apartment. At this point rain is expected. Last month we were in NJ in someone's back yard. Winter puts us on a virtual stitching schedule. We have members all over, so if you are on FB and interested in joining Metrostitchers, my group, just send me a PM. There are about 100 members, about 20 particularly active. Very low key. Lots of readers in the group too. You can lurk or be active. We also have been known to hook up with stitchers in other locations. Some of us just got together at a Stitching Retreat in Exton PA.
In fact, any stitcher interested in joining who hasn't already (there are a few) just send me a PM.
The big issue for stitching in public areas inside is decent light - not always available at indoor public locations which all seem to specialize in 'mood lighting'.

With players being traded all the time it's hard to stick to just one team if you get attached to players. Once my Kings were knocked out of the last playoffs by the Oilers, I switched to rooting for them as not only did I feel McDavid deserves to win the cup, but ex-Duck Corey Perry would have gotten his second too if they had won. I was so sad when they lost the final.
I totally agree to a rule against talking about politics during the Zoom call. My stitching group Zoom has the same rule ... and it's the ONLY rule ... because we definitely have people on opposite sides of the political spectrum. There is the very rare comment, but it just dies out because noone else will 'take the bait". There's no need to avoid talk about sports teams though ... none of us care that much about it LOL. Since I moved back to Iowa though, I really need to start to care since people talk here more about the local college sports teams than they do the weather (well, no not the weather, this is a farming state).
In the past I think what we did was pick a book genre or tag ... and then ask attendees to bring two books in that genre to talk about. Do we want to do that again?

One of my brothers wanted to be the next Wayne Gretzky from 3 to about 14, but turned down the offer to live with friends in the city to get into better hockey leagues (he showed promise.) He's the one who became an actor.
Doughgirl5562 wrote: "In the past I think what we did was pick a book genre or tag ... and then ask attendees to bring two books in that genre to talk about. How about bringing a book or two that you have pulled from your long standing TBR to read for PBT and then wondered why it took you so long to read it? Or a surprising gem you have read even if it was a book you just happened to pick up or was lent to you.
This should give a nice diversity to what people bring to the table.
Dear PBTers ... I have COVID and am just wiped out. Is someone else available to host the zoom session tomorrow?
I'll host. NEW ZOOM LINK FOR SATURDAY AUG 17 AT 4 PM EASTERN

FWIW, because it has a timer so I can monitor how long I'm not my computer (very important so I don't overdo it) I'll be on my VPN so will look like I'm somewhere in Europe--but fear not, Google/Zoom has geolocators because it offers to translate things into English for me all the time. If it goes on too long I'll fetch my supper, etc.
I'll be using my no-camera computer because the screen is much more Karin-friendly than that of my laptop so I can use it longer. And it has better speakers (Bose for computer) plus mic since it still lets me have two different ones and I can't manage to do that with my laptop. Spoiled for sound? Moi?
