PBT Zoom Meeting - PART TWO
It sounds like the Zoom for this Sunday the 18th is a go!As mentioned earlier, please bring a copy of the book that you are currently reading - or one that you recently finished - to the Zoom. One edit to those instructions, though. I am announcing now that you will be reading a short passage from a page ending in "18". So pick a short passage from page 18 - or 118 - or 218 - or 318, etc, that you would like to share with the group. The exact page number is your choice.
Looking forward to seeing you all :-)
Here's a link to the article about the colorful crochet canopy in Malaga, Spain. Those who said it was a piece of art were correct! I googled Malaga, Spain and it looks like they have a lot of street art.https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.theo...
Tessa - can you post a link to the book by Shaina(sp), the author you know?Besides talking about my adventures at the Royal School of Needlework virtual summer school last week, and needlework in general, we had great discussions about:
Pride and Prejudice
Longbourn
The Lacuna
Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents
RobinP - please post yours!
And, BookConcierge read us a titillating passage from her latest Lisa Kleypas regency romance read as we signed off.
Doughgirl - Finished the Starz Outlander Season 4! I do just love to see how they change it up to make the show work, and what they do to make the book TV Series Palatable. I actually really loved it. What an ending!

What the Body Remembers by [author:Shauna Si..."Thanks...and it is already on My TBR!
I spoke about Iola Leroy, a little-known 19th-century novel by a Black woman, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. It's something I am reading to prepare a presentation about her.
Robin P wrote: "I spoke about Iola Leroy, a little-known 19th-century novel by a Black woman, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. It's something I am reading to prepare a presentation about..."Thanks Robin! I did not get any of that down correctly.
I finished it and it's not great as a novel, but it does show some lesser-known perspectives, like Black regiments in the Civil War, and the problems of racism in the North.
I just noticed a note on my calendar that I was tentatively to host PBT Zoom this Sunday - which obviously is not going to work out. Question - do we want to hold a zoom in August? Saturday the 21 August works for me - I'm thinking perhaps 6 or 6:30 PM?
If that does not work at all - we can skip a month.
Last time those in attendance discussed having a needlework one -- I'm more than happy to suggest that those who have languishing or ongoing needlework projects of any kind - cross stitch, needlepoint, knitting, crochet -- bring them and we can motivate each other while talking books. Share tips and guide each other. Other than the RSN classes I took in July, I've not stitched for 2 years or more and I could frankly use a bit of a push to pick up one of my cross stitch UFOs.
We can leave the book chat general - some book that has surprised you lately. Or bring one that somehow involves needlework or textiles, either as subject of book (I have lots of those from histories to essays) or a character is a tailor or seamstress or needlewoman or even just reflective of culture and society -- descriptions of beautiful saris in books set in India for example.
Love to hear what everyone thinks/wants.
Robin P wrote: "I volunteered to host August but I can't do the 15th."I'm wondering if I was supposed to do September and just put it wrong on my calendar?
Whatever - clearly this weekend works for neither Robin nor I.
I'm available on Sunday or Saturday. Just post the time. But if it's cancelled I'm okay with that too.
I'll be out of pocket the weekend of August 21-22 - at a stitching retreat actually - in Utah :-)I will be around this weekend (August 14-15) - but only later on Saturday or anytime Sunday. Am available the last weekend also - but that's Labor Day weekend so probably not the best. I'm OK with skipping the Zoom in August also.
Theresa, I had not heard interest of having a separate stitching Zoom, but if you have, I'll join in! I don't want to talk about it on the regular PBT zooms on a regular basis. It's not fair to the non-stitchers.
It's been a busy month. Add to that I'll likely be going back to work 5 days/week starting soon (likely for 3-4 weeks before I (hopefully) can do some from home again). Boooo....
Anyway, I suspect I'll be skipping this month. :-(
Sorry, I've been without internet for the last few days. The schedule/list is always posted in Message # 2 of this thread.
Robin is to host in August. Theresa in Sept. We decided that the host would choose the date / time that works best for her.
Once the host posts the info here, I'll post it to message # 2.
I'm fine if we decide to skip another month.
Robin P wrote: "Let's skip August. It sounds like it would be a small group."I agree. I will put my calendar reminder in Sept where it should have been all along.
I love this phrase "Out of Pocket." Its got a sweetness to it. However its also the phrase we use in the therapy world, where patients choose to see a therapist their insurance doesn't take. Where they just pay "OOP." Out of Pocket. Sometimes for the right match, and a seasoned therapist, that's just what you gotta do if you can afford it. But its our phrase, and those tend to be folks who really value the work and the relationship. Out of pocket are cream of the crop relationships because no one is phoning it in. Well, I hope the therapist is never phoning it in. But in terms of the work, its the real stuff.

Where ..."Amy - lawyers use the expression in 3 ways: for expenses out side fee that are billed to client, for anything insurance does not cover, and when not available to be contacted. It has such versatility.
Who's interested in a September Zoom? I can do a Saturday at 6:30 pm EDT - dates I can do it:
18 Sept
25 Sept
annapi wrote: "If it's the same time, late afternoon, I can make both dates."Yes, it will be the same time on both dates.
So far 9/18 looking like the one.
I'm likely to skip again. Back at work (in person) 5 days/week. Might be able to go down to 3 days/week toward the end of the month, and I might feel like I have more time after that.
I am confirming Saturday Sept. 18 at 6.30 pm EDT for the next Zoom. Bring your favorite read and least favorite read from this summer (June through August) to discuss. I will post Zoom link a day or two before.

Although I do miss going into the office, I don't think I could handle 5 days/week again. Hopefully that changes for you soon!

Have fun, everyone! I will pop in again one day.

REMINDER! Our Zoom is tomorrow, Saturday Sept. 18 at 6.30 PM Eastern! This is Sunday morning for those Downunder, middle of the night in Europe and mid-afternoon on the west coast! Love to see your lovely faces and hear your voices!
Bring your favorite read or reads from this summer (read on June July or August) to show and tell, and also your least favorite or most disappointing read.
ZOOM LINK IN MESSAGE #388
We had a great discussion tonight covering a broad range of topics plus both favorite and most disappointing reads from the summer. BookConcierge, DoughGirl, RobinP, and Annapi were all kind enough to let me experiment with screen sharing in Zoom too (images of the covers of the books I talked about). The books I discussed:
Most disappointing: The Left Hand of Darkness - only thing that I enjoyed was the 'boys adventure' in the last quarter of the book.
Best and highly recommend:
She Who Became the Sun
The Lacuna
The City We Became
I also later talked about Black Water Sister - so strong on sense of modern day Penang, Malaysia abd Malay culture. Also a strong feminist read.
What was interesting is how much each our choices bore similarities to each other's. For example, 3 of us had books set in china, 2 of which touched on the Ming Dynasty. 2 of us had books with NYC settings.
My most disappointing was A Cup of Light by Nicole Mones. I'd read two other books by her and had high expectations, and this one just didn't deliver. I rated it 2.5 stars and I really liked learning more about the pottery (porcelain) of ancient China, particularly the Ming dynasty. But the story just fell flat for me. Best and highly recommended: (all books I've read this month, and haven't gotten to reviewing yet)
Once Upon a Time in Rio by Francisco Azevedo (4****)
Writers & Lovers by Lily King (4****)
The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay (4.5****)
My most disappointing wasOne Last Stop. I loved her debut Red, White & Royal Blue, but in this one none of the characters felt real and I didn't feel the chemistry of the romance. The NYC setting was very stereotyped. The only good thing was that I was dealing with a health issue where it was hard to sleep and listening to this book put me to sleep multiple times!I also recently liked Writers & Lovers, as well as The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and Miss Benson's Beetle (especially good on audio.)
So it's been a couple of months since we had a zoom session, and we have some new members in the group who may want to join in.Our next zoom session will be on Saturday, November 20, at 5:30 p.m. CENTRAL standard time (That's 6:30p on the East Coast, 3:30p on the Pacific coast, evening in the UK, Sunday morning Down Under).
Put it on your calendars.
I'll post the link closer to the event.
I'm not sure if I'll make it this time, but is that timing correct? 5:30 eastern time (east coast) would generally be 3:30 mountain time. That would be 2:30 on the Pacific coast.
But I'm confused because shouldn't eastern time be later than central time? Not earlier? Eastern time (latest), then central, then mountain, then west coast? So 6:30 (eastern), 5:30 (central), 4:30 (mountain), 3:30 pacific?
Book Concierge wrote: "I'm the one confused, Cindy. You're correct ... I reversed Central and Eastern."Oh, thank you! Makes more sense now! :-)
So .... I haven't heard from anyone else regarding a zoom session this coming Saturday, Nov 20. Is there still interest in this?
Should we just wait til the new year given everyone's increasingly busy holiday season?
Sorry - I've been mostly offline -- first because I was on vacation in Europe (river cruise down the Rhine) -- then because I was adjusting to the time change when I came back. I think I am finally fully back! I'm ready, willing and available this Saturday the 20th for a Zoom chat, but if everybody else is busy I vote we wait until the new year.
