I am not likely to be able to make it, so if not, happy birthday early, Lynne!

Reminder: I'm hosting the Sunday, May 2 Zoom - link below. It is 5 PM NYC time. First time hosting you folks and only 3rd time hosting a zoom. I suggest if you have trouble logging in, post in comments here and look for a post from me. Bring something with a birthday candle to light and blow out for our Cinco de Mayo birthday celebrant Lynne - and anyone else! We'll sing Happy Birthday too!
And carrying on the Cinco de Mayo theme - plan on talking about something related to Cinco de Mayo, Mexico, travel in Mexico, books, etc.
I also promised Lynne I'd tell the story of my first meeting with Sue Grafton... be warned.
Theresa Racht, Esq. is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Wow! I've never seen a Zoom invite with so many international numbers. Hopefully nobody will need those and will be able to use video. I plan to be on, though I don't have much to say about Mexico.
Robin P wrote: "Wow! I've never seen a Zoom invite with so many international numbers. Hopefully nobody will need those and will be able to use video. For Tessa's drive through Iowa:https://www.madisoncounty.com/attract...
If you only have a little bit of time, the Imes covered bridge is only a few miles off I-35. https://www.google.com/search?q=imes+...
If you go into town to see the John Wayne Birthplace Museum, then I recommend that you visit the Cutler-Donahue Covered Bridge, which is located in the city park.
It’s a good thing I forgot about it and would not have been able to come, because all I would be doing right now would be telling you where things are at in Outlander! (lol)! I must say I’m really enjoying listening to the audio for drums of autumn right now. But I can also add, that I’m really enjoying my fly book from May, the library of legends. I’m really into it. I’m even into my witchy short stories. It’s a really good reading time right now, when the world is too busy for me to take a breath.
Great time! The books I mentioned: Hunger’s Brides: A Novel of the Baroque by Canadian author W. Paul Anderson about Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. A link about her: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juana....
Poems, Protest, and a Dream: Selected Writings is a convenient Penguin Paperback Edition of her translated to English work.
Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone! Have to admit that Mexico has not previously been on the top of my countries to read about, but after this Zoom call I am much more intrigued. Got some good recommendations.
Amy wrote: "It’s a good thing I forgot about it and would not have been able to come, because all I would be doing right now would be telling you where things are at in Outlander! (lol)! I must say I’m really ..."Glad you are enjoying Drums and have found a way to fit the long Outlander books into your busy life :-) If you have questions or want to discuss, let me know. And congrats on a successful conclusion to the college hunt for your son!
All - a couple weeks ago we discussed during a Zoom reducing our Zoom meets to once a month, given we are all starting to get out more. While not discussed this past weekend, I figured it is time to poll and see what all interested think. My suggestion is once a month on the first Saturday at 5PM ET. We will still rotate hosts - we have 4 now at least.
Thoughts? I prefer Saturday to Sunday at this point. But it really is ultimately a decision of majority coupled with the collective hosts.
I'm ok with once a month, but I'm not sure if Saturdays is best? I'm ok with it but I notice more people wanted Sundays. But I'm good with either.
Once a month is better, but I think if it were Saturdays would never see me. But if that’s what the majority wanted, I would feel bad if I made you switch to Sundays and then couldn’t show so often.
One of my F2F book clubs meets the 1st Saturday at 4p, so if you chose Saturday, I'd be missing. Also, 1st weekend might run into conflicts with 4th of July / Labor Day / New Year's
4th weekend would possibly conflict with Thanksgiving (US) and Christmas
2nd or 3rd weekend (either Saturday or Sunday) might be better.
I do like the 5p time frame. (4p Central time zone).
Since I don't often make it, Saturdays are okay in the summer, but not so much during the academic year once things are back to normal in the fall. However, as I do more IRL social stuff I find my home time is going back to my introvert, non-talking quiet time (well, obviously my family lives here, so it's not overly quiet). Whatever is chosen, if I can make it, I will :)
I think Sunday would be better for me, actually. 2nd or 3rd weekend is fine, we just need a reminder.
I have hardly been a regular attendee...missing more than I attended. I just threw out was was discussed momentarily a couple weeks ago as to date/time.
Is anyone hosting tomorrow? Its the 3rd saturday. I was planning to come this time.Or was the once a month starting already? I dont think there was a decision made on day or time.
Hi Cindy! We haven't switched to monthly yet, although probably will soon. I'm available tonight and have missed chatting with you, so I can host. For Cindy and anyone else who wants to chat books and life tonight, please bring TWO books. Physical or e-copy only. Other than that, any two books will do. We'll have some fun with them :-)
Lynne Jungman is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Ah, thank you, Lynne! I will "see" you later! And maybe a few others, as well. :-)ETA: And thinking I'll try to choose a couple of less well-known books... I do like the open-ended option!
Amy wrote: "Lynne! I'm 94%. maybe 95,96% done with Drums!!!!"Wonderful! I hope it has kept you entertained with everything you have going on right now. So much happens in the last quarter of the book! And that means that you've read Jemmy's birth scene, one of my favorite scenes in all of the books
We are there right now! Like the four of them are heading back to Frasiers Ridge. I just love the relationship between Brianna and Lord John Grey! I was furious with her for a hot minute, but she worked it out.

It was so great to see those of you who were there today! :-) Lynne, will you be mentioning the books we talked about, or should we each mention our own?
I can at least mention my two "unofficial" ones that I mentioned. (ETA: These are the ones I read for my bookclub that I wouldn't have otherwise read - or known about - except due to my book club, and I really enjoyed them):
- Can You Hear the Nightbird Call? by Anita Rau Badami
And the one I couldn't remember the title of (ETA: This made my favourites the year I read it):
- The Pearl That Broke Its Shell / Nadia Hashimi
Theresa wrote: "Sorry to have missed it but SallyS and I were meeting IRL!"Very good reason to miss!

I didn't keep track of the books we discussed since there was no real theme. So thanks for circling back with those book titles. Are those the book titles that you couldn't remember in the Zoom? The bookclub books that you loved?
It was a good discussion and as usual we could have kept talking past the allotted two hours :-) Tessa told us about her visit to see family in San Antonio and the pinning ceremony for her nephew. We discussed going to restaurants now that things are opening up again.
RE books, we played a game where we each read the first line(s) on page 15 (or 115 or 215) of a book - and then of course discussed the books. Coincidentally, Tessa and I are each reading a book by the same author -Peter Carey of Australia!
Doughgirl5562 wrote: "I didn't keep track of the books we discussed since there was no real theme. So thanks for circling back with those book titles. Are those the book titles that you couldn't remember in the Zoom? The bookclub books that you loved?..."Yes, I should have specified that!
"The Pearl That Broke Its Shell" made my favourites the year I read it!
The other two books I read from (and I'd love if everyone else could share theirs, too! Even with no theme, I didn't write anything down, but one of them did interest me, so I wanted to look into it further)... and both of these made my favourites the years I read them:
- Fierce Kingdom / Gin Phillips
- To Sleep with the Angels: The Story of a Fire / David Cowan and John Kuenster
I was away with 2 other couples, who we usually see several times a year (we all live a couple hours apart) - fabulous to be "normal" again!
We don't seem to have an overwhelming consensus about day/time, so the four of us with zoom accounts who are willing to host will figure this out and post a schedule based on what works for us. Most probably the 2d or 3rd weekend of the month, and either a Saturday or a Sunday.
JUNE Meeting: Sunday June 13, at 4p EASTERN (3p Central / 2p Mountain / 1p Pacific)
Hosted by Tessa.
Invite will be posted after I've set up the meeting.
LINK to invite will ALWAYS appear in Post # 2 on the 1st page of this thread.
I'm unlikely to make it - I have a 1 PM Zoom and since I'm on zoom so much for work, I am not willing to have my entire Sunday afternoon on zoom. Much as I love you guys.
BC, I realized that I need to go shopping for a wedding gift before the dinner with my friend on Sunday, so I don't think I'm going to be able to make it either. I actually have a busy weekend also, and that's very rare for me LOL.I'm not really in favor of the idea of cancelling for the whole summer, but maybe we just take it a month at a time?
I vastly prefer the Sundays, but I am also not able to make this one and vote for the Summer Suspension.
Alrighty, then. I'm good with not hosting this month.Totally understand how we're all getting busier OUTSIDE our little pandemic bubbles ... doesn't that feel wonderful?!!
We'll take it month-by-month.
Lynne ... you signed up to host in July, so you can choose a date/time at your convenience and let us know.
Doughgirl5562 wrote: "I'm not really in favor of the idea of cancelling for the whole summer, but maybe we just take it a month at a time?..."I agree with Lynne on this one. Summer/winter doesn't really matter, and it doesn't usually make a difference (the season) on how busy I am (or am not).
Season has nothing to do with being busy either for me except December is always crazy between work stuff and holidays. Pre-pandemic I never vacationed and travelled in the summer. I say we play it month to month and according go who is hosting.
Time for a mid- Summer chat! I've scheduled a Zoom for Sunday July 18th starting at 7pm Central / 8pm Eastern. I realize this is not our usual time on Sundays, but my reasoning is that most of us are busy during the daytime hours in Summer. We can be a little flexible and move the start time up a half an hour or hour or so if needed. No real theme. Let's just chat about our current and recent reads. Bring your current book with you to share a passage (pg to be picked at random during the call).
(If everyone is busy, we'll cancel the July call. No worries either way.)
