The newest task for Week 7 has been posted (I'm about to copy it here) so I'm not sure what that means for Vicki since this makes her officially two weeks behind on completions. 🙁 Waiting for Jane to weigh in on this when she updates threads later.

Pearl of China by Anchee Min
Book: Pearl of China
Read: 10/11/2020
Rating: 3 stars

Review
I was really disappointed in this book, but that's partly my fault. I had different expectations for it because I hadn't read the blurb on it. For me, it was way too slow and it didn't resonate with me at all. I honestly didn't realize that it was about Pearl Buck. It was set in China, but I didn't get the true feel of China like I thought I would. It covers Pearl's friendship with a woman named Willow Yee. There was an element of the story that I found interesting and I could see it used in schools as a philosophical discussion. Dick Lin, a translator of Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto, and Pearl got into a discussion about whether or not authors should "write with the voice of the real people." Dick thought definitely not to which Pearl replied that would leave out 95% of the Chinese people. Dick replied, "We deny these small-minded, ill-mannered characters a voice." He felt authors should "guide" readers to making changes in this world; whereas, Pearl thought it was up to the readers. I enjoyed that section which to me was very philosophical and made me think about writers' intentions. I know many authors write for recreational reading, some informational, and so on, but there are those whose literature might be trying to influence us without our knowledge if we don't read certain materials with caution and intention.

Hi everyone - Vicki is fine :)

I only start to look at removal when someone has three books outstanding when I make the next call. Vicki was two books behind, so there was still some leeway.

The wording for removal is 'more than 2 books behind' - so all good :)

It's actually a re-read for me. :) I want to read it before I dive into Hands Down, which is Zac's book, because it's been a while and I want to reacquaint myself with the story.

I've read both Kulti and From Lukov with Love in the last 6 months. I'd recommend From Lukov first. :)

I haven't heard that anyone else needs a PASS this week, so go for it! If you find one that works and have extra time, you can change your mind right up until the next task gets posted on Friday. Go ahead and do a selection post that says you're taking Option 3. If you end up doing a book for it, just make a new selection post indicating that it's an update.

Review:

Y'all.......the audiobook is definitely worth a listen. Cyndee told me so but it was even better than I thought. Jasmine and Ivan's relationship through this book was amazing. I loved reading about them becoming a pairs skating team. The back and forth smart mouth remarks to each other made the book so much more interesting. Also, when both realized they hadn't told Ivan's sister who happened to be Jasmine's best friend that they were partners was a great reading scene. I think one of my favorite parts of the book was Ivan's mini-van and his "babies." It was a great story. I loved all of it. Now, when we going to read more about these characters. It looks like Ruby may have a book which I gotta go find but I need all the characters. The question is how do I fit all these books into my challenges right now.

Review:
I liked this book. I was also having to find all the food and alcohol words for another challenge so it made me really focus a little more than I sometimes do. I had to read very carefully. Nina was having a rough time in London and needed a break from everything. She ended up renting a secluded mountain cabin and took off to the USA. Only problem was, the cabin wasn't empty when she got there. I really liked learning about all the characters. A mystery also occured during the book and I had it a little figured out but didn't have it all figured out by the end. It was a pretty good book.

Review

I thought this book was so beautifully written pros full of imagery that allows the reader to truly visualize everything. I had the audio and e-book version so I alternated some, but I really did love listening to this one.

I have a difficult time with parents who don't parent and leave that up to others. JoJo had to parent his sister, which should not happen ever in my opinion. She was only 13 years old and definitely far more mature than her chronological age, but I've seen children grow up very fast under circumstances such as what she was dealing with so it was believable.

It was told from past to present and it appeared to cover a span of a much longer time than it actually did, but it worked well. There were some loveable and not so loveable characters, and possibly one or two that are very difficult to like at all.

Review:
This classic started off strong. It hooked me from the beginning with faked deaths, assassination plots, and espionage. However, it goes a little "meh" for me in the middle. This was my second reading and I listened to an audio version this time, hoping that might make a difference in my enjoyment of it, but I still had that same let down about midway. Perhaps because it is a well-loved classic I just set my expectations too high.

Review: I would have given it more stars but I thought the hero was a bit of an ass. Also I felt a little disconnected from the story (maybe because this is the third book in the series and I didn't read the first two) but I just felt like the two of them barely knew anything about each other till 60% of the book and by then had already fallen in love. So 2.5-3 stars

Review: It was a really fun read. The only thing I felt was lacking was the proportion of the love story to the main plot. Maybe because this was the first book the main focus was on the MCs relationship. Only the last 25% was about the mystery/overall story. Hopefully the next books are evened out.

Review

This was my second read and probably my favorite book of Colleen Hoover although that's a tough thing to decided!

Ridge and Sydney are the MC's and I love them! What I especially loved was the way Ridge was able to play music but that's all I will say about that! They will definitely touch your heart! There was one bar/club scene where he dedicated a song to her that touched me so much. It was simple but made me cry.

If you are a romantic at heart, you love to feel emotions, and if you don't mind a "good" cry, you MUST read this book! And if none of the above fit you, how about being able to actually listen to the songs as you read the book? BRILLIANT!!!
