All About Wheelathon VAbout this Challenge
◈ The team will get an extra 15 completion points if all the letters in the word are part of their spell-it-out
◈ Once teams have read their word for the week they can "re-read" the word to gain more letter points, but no additional completion points.
◈ Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count (after june 13)
◈ Books must be at least 160 pages in length. Children's books, Graphic Novels, Scripts/plays (movie and theater), Cookbooks and Poetry books cannot be used unless by word count they can be verified (by arbookfinder.com or arbookfinder.co.uk) as at least 40,000 words or have an audio edition that is at least 5 hours long
◈ Only books read during the specified round can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked” from previous rounds to use later in the challenge
◈ Rereads are permitted provided it has been at least 6 months since you last read/listened to the book
Point System
◈ Books less than 160 pages = 0 points
◈ Books between 160 and 1000 pages = 0.1 points/page
◈ Books over 1000 pages = 100 points
(points will be rounded up/down from 0.5 as per standard maths)
Tags
◈ Each colour segment on the wheel has been paired with a selection of genre tags.
◈ If you read and use a book with a matching genre, you will gain 5 bonus points per book, for a maximum of 10 books / 50 points.
◈ Genres must match exactly (though plural/singular is OK).
◈ There is no minimum number of tags required.
◈ Books must be used in the spell out to qualify for Tag points.
◈ for reasons the sheets show these points as "Top Shelf bonus" points

Really excited to have you all on Team Don Quixote! Wheel is one of my favorite challenges at NBRC. To kick us off, let's get to know each other. Some old friends here and hopefully some new as well.
I live in Oregon and work at Crater Lake National Park. The park is opening next week so I am working 15-16 hour days until we get reopened from the covid shutdown. I read all genres, but really love mystery, historical fiction, and non-fiction. I don't read a ton of sci-fi or contemporary romance, but I absolutely inhale historical romance. Weird, I know.
How about all of you?
Oh hai!I will do a proper intro post soon, but about to go to sleep because QUIDDITCH. A reserve is coming to sub for me in, oh, 8 minutes. I'll be back online in about 6 hours. :D
Hi everyone i'm emeli a half Swedish half latina from sweden i live with my boyfriend and our cat seymour and im a hopeless romantic that loves romance novels and hea and i work as a cleaner so my life has been pretty normal during this crisis because sweden has been pretty laid back in comparison to other countries
Hi again! Okay, I have some time left before I'm on again in Quidditch... but, any minute now... lol.I'm Alysa, from NYC. Things are weird here but improving, if we're being general.
I'm a librarian in real life, doing basically collections management in an academic library. I read widely, but with majority Spec Fic (sci fi, fantasy, et al).
This will be my third Wheelathon, which -- after the last TT and of course due to my first ever NBRC team challenge having been Cutthroat -- I now consider to be a pretty chill challenge. Or at least, this new Wheelathon will be relatively chill for me, since I aim to rein in my infamous OCD competitive streak, and I am not captaining, and will try not to backseat captain so much. :D
Hi All! I’m checking in. I live near Chicago. So it’s been a bit crazy here with covid and protests. But I am so happy to play Wheels again for the third time! It is one of my favorite challenges. I live with my husband and 2 cat babies. My husband and I love road trips too. Even during social distancing, we will go on drives when it starts to feel claustrophobic at home. So the theme for this round of wheels is perfect!😁 I read pretty much any fiction. I plan to read 1 or 2 big books a week. Books I haven’t been able to read in other challenges because I usually need to finish quickly. I am already planning a few books and assigning them tasks. This will be fun!
Alysa wrote: "@Captains, are we doing a planning spreadsheet?"I'll let Michelle answer that. I've only played Wheel one other time, but our captain didn't use a planning spreadsheet.
HI everybody! My name is Laura. I'll be assisting Michelle & LaurLa as a co-captain. I'm a homeschooling mom (aren't we all these days?!) of 6. I've been homeschooling for over 10 years. We have lots of cats and lots of chickens! I've played in one other Wheel and had a blast. I'm looking forward to reading with you all!
I'm kind of excited about our first spin! I love Mariana Zapata and I re-read all her books at least once a year. I'm currently in the middle of this cycle, but once I finish the one I'm listening to now I'll stop and wait. And I've been meaning to re-listen to the Guild Hunter's series. It looks like the whole series is tagged Wings! But all those Os are scary!
Hi all! Carrie from Pennsylvania. We went green here yesterday for our new normal. Our state has over 75,000 cases but our numbers have been declining (knock on wood).I’m married and have 1 daughter who just graduated college last month. I also have 3 kitties and a dog who keep us all busy and entertained.
I love to read pretty much everything but my favorites are definitely mystery, thriller, and noir. I’ve participated in wheel once before and had a great time! Looking forward to doing it again and getting to know all of you better!
I am totally open to a planning spreadsheet if that works well for you. I haven't used them for previous wheels but I'm for whatever helps us score the most points.
Hey, everyone! I’m here! Gonna catch up on reading everyone’s posts & then I’ll post my own little intro. ;]
Okay, here we go - gonna try to keep things short - -I’m Francesca, but - unless you’re my grandmother (which I hope you’re not) - you can call me Frankie. :] Other than being a challenge-addicted, Goodreads-obsessed book fanatic, I like to bake (& sometimes cook) & I love writing flash fiction pieces. My toy Poodle, Ninja, & I watch Spongebob every night & cuddle... & that about sums up my life. ;]
I read across all genres, but my favorites are horror, mystery/thriller, paranormal/fantasy, & historical fiction. I also really love graphic novels, but I don’t get to read as much of those anymore since they don’t qualify for most of my challenges. (Boo.)
Wheel was my very first reading challenge at NBRC & it’s my absolute favorite challenge ever - literally. I’m not a speed demon reader (though that would definitely be my first choice of super power), but I am an easy going, laid back teammate who will contribute as much as I can & have fun!
As Michelle mentioned, I see some familiar people on our team, which is awesome! & I see some new people who I’m looking forward to getting to know! I’m super excited to be on Team Don Quixote with y’all & can’t wait to start playing!
(Okay, maybe not as short as I originally intended. LOL.)
Laura wrote: "I'm kind of excited about our first spin! But all those Os are scary!..."
Same! I was excited when I saw our spin on the spreadsheet the other day. & luckily, I have a couple O’s already planned for some other challenges. So I should be able to cover a couple at least. ;p
One of them is One for the Blackbird, One for the Crow. Has anyone read that one?
Oh, One for the Blackbird, One for the Crow looks good! It works for O in both title and author. :) And western or historical fiction. That is how I see books now, by letters, character names, tasks it will fulfill. I’m getting into Wheels mode!😀
Michelle - For my previous wheels challenge, we did use a planning spreadsheet. I am comfortable filling it in. It does help to keep track of what letter still needs to be done. But I know in the end there’s a lot of shuffling that needs to be done to create the most words. One thing I can’t do is create links for the books in the spreadsheet. It’s because I use an iPad and not a desktop computer. Other than that, I am fine with using a spreadsheet!
Hi! Quidditch is over! My team won, and then I got a whole night of sleep, phew! (That was nuts but fun — did anyone else follow the match?)I am promised to my family today, but starting late tonight I will be a lot more present here. I can also help with a planning spreadsheet. I don’t think I have ever been on a team that did not use one... and I have rarely not been on a high-performing team. Just sayin’ 😁
Two more things for now:
1) Hi Frankie!!!! You are the only person here that I’ve ever teamed with before, and didn’t we have fun in TT? Ira 4 ever!
2) Everybody used a crap ton of O’s during The Floor is Lava challenge last summer. We can dig up those NBRC threads (and spreadsheets, if applicable) and pull ideas.

Congrats Alysa! I have never played. But it seems like the game is intense!
Geri wrote: "Congrats Alysa! I have never played. But it seems like the game is intense!"It was pretty intense, yeah. But my team got along really well (I had played on various other team challenges with the majority of them before) and we spent a lot of time preparing, which fun and really paid off. It was almost like a real sport! And I even got to read some good books, which I was not necessarily expecting, lol.
Does this work ok for all of you? The word we are spelling is at the top of each round's tab. Let me know what changes you might want to see!https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Nice start! It might be a good idea to either A) do the Spell Out with each letter in a single row or column, so we can place books in for each letter as we go (and note possible alternate letters), or B) change “Reason” to something like “Letters this works for” and ask everyone to just list all letter options there.
In either case, it will make it a lot easier for you Captains to move stuff around as needed.
I might not be making sense because very tired...
I like letters this works for much better. Let's change it to that.So under Letter Options, just put title, author LN, author FN, characters, series, etc. That will make moving around much easier.
We do still need a reason column for the task, since we have to put that on the official spreadsheet.I think it’s Task Justification on the official.
Geri wrote: "Oh, One for the Blackbird, One for the Crow looks good! It works for O in both title and author. :) And western or historical fiction. This is what I was thinking, too. Have it set up similar to the actual spreadsheet, with the spell out down one column. Then have all the other stuff, too. That way we could easily see which letters are being read for, etc.
Hello Team DQ!Greetings from Team Orient Express. 😉
You can find our collected recommendations here: Book recommendations by Team Orient Express
Please feel free to drop by and recommend books in return, you will always be welcome aboard.
Hi everyone! Sorry I'm a few days late but I made it!I'm Britta, I'm from Estonia and I'm a software engineer and master's student. I have my last exam of the semester tomorrow so after that I'm definitely jumping into planning for the challenge and finishing my current books!
I love reading and I've been doing it all my life. Besides books I love computer games, power metal (and metal festivals) and all sorts of horror.
I've participated in some of the TT challenges before and I was feeling nostalgic so I was super happy to find that this challenge was just starting! Also looking forward to having more time to read during the summer, university has had me completely swamped.
I also have a couple of reading challenges I've set myself that I want to finish soon so hopefully I'll get to use those books as well!
Greetings from The Wonderful World of Oz! We are preparing some book recommendations for you. We still have some people on our team to add theirs but you can check them out here. Happy Reading Y'all!
I added a Tag list at the top of Round 1 in planning sheet, just to have one more point of reference without clicking thru the drop-down.Re tasks -- I know every person has their own list, but does anyone know if the list resets every Round? Like, if you Read a book set in Canada (#1) in Round 1, can you Read [another] a book set in Canada (#1) in Round 2? Or is the one long task list supposed to last for the entire Wheelathon?
Hello Dons!
As we Hitchhike through the galaxy, my team is collecting recommendations. Ours can be found here. And you may want to check it periodically as some members appear to of gotten lost in their travels and we also plan to update it with good books read during Wheel.
Happy Reading!!

It’s one task list for the 10 weeks. It does not reset.
@Emeli -- wow the American news reports about Sweden lately are so confusing! I hope everything is okay for you :)@Britta -- Estonia! I have been there once, like 10 years ago in the middle of snowy winter. I would love to come back someday.
I always love finding out where everyone lives. Goodreads brings together people from all over the world. 😀I have been doing more planning with tasks. With 200 of them, I won’t run out. All my books should have tasks. Most of my books fit more than one. So I will use the harder tasks first.
A book I am excited to finally read is
. I bought it a few months ago, but haven’t had time to read it yet. It fits our first word/phrase in a couple of ways. Hopefully, once I start reading, it will work for even more letters.Any books you are excited to read?
