Explanation: The mom, Mimi, though not the only main character, had a dramatic life change when the oldest of her twelve children had a psychotic break and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Subsequently, 5 of her other children also were diagnosed with varying forms of mental illness (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc). The novel delved into the dramatic changes this had on all of the family, but the mother seemed to have to face the most, as her "ideal" family image she tried to cultivate was completely blown apart.
