I debated on that one, Kristie. But, I decided to hold off. If it comes up in a future sale, I may consider it.

message 958: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19340 comments Someone nominated it for a BOM in another group and another member commented that it was an amazing book and she didn't know why it hadn't gotten more attention when it came out. I had never heard of it before. So, when I saw it on sale, I thought why not?

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am not sure I can forgive whom ever posted that NOS4A2 was on sale for Nook and Kindle for $1.99! Who can resist? Obviously, not me!
So, 14 books later, I forced myself to quit shopping. Most of the books I bought were already on my TBR list, but there are several more 1st in series books now too.

Oh, that was me who mentioned that NOS4A2 was on sale. Sorry. I've done that too, though. Gone to buy one ebook on sale and ended up with a bunch. If you could buy used ebooks that were priced like used books, I don't know how I could control myself. Space and money are the only things restraining me from buying thousands of books a year.

I think there's a good whispersync deal with that book too. Kate Mulgrew is phenomenal in her narration - highly recommended.

message 965: by [deleted user] (new)

I went to Waterstones yesterday. I had in my head that I must go to the bookstore as I hadn't been for ages. I buy most of my books online and now I know why! OMG, how expensive!! I am surprised the high street book stores are still around! I only bought two books in the end, Dorothy Must Die and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and that was only because they were on sale.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh good grief, it looks like Amy already bought the Audible book, Janice. Oh, well, now we have both!

edited: So she says to me: "why didn't you buy it on Kildle? Then we could have Whispersync too!" Picky.

message 968: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I bought A Little Life A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara which is predicted to win the Man Booker Prize tonight. It sounds like it will be a harrowing, depressing read.

message 969: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Many people I know who have read it loved it. I'm am so glad there is another cover for it now, I hated the first cover.

I have A Little Life too Lisa. Not sure when I am going to get around to it though but it does sound very interesting.

I'm not sure when I will get to it either. It's quite a chunkster by the looks of it. I had no idea it was so long until I looked at the page count here on Goodreads.

That's good to hear Tasha :) I'm not sure what the first cover was like, is it this one with the guy on the front?

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

message 973: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee I found this little book shop near by, most of the books were used and old, but I found pretty good titles, The Da Vinci Code, The Summons, The King Of Torts in a hard cover! How cool is that? They were all in half price and a discount too!
From the bookfair I've got The Litigators
Nice collection for the holiday I guess !

Sounds like you got a bargain CFDeeDee! :)

CFDeeDee Yeah .. They're in a good condition too :D
I guess I'll return back there every now and then

message 976: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I just bought Last Argument of Kings so now I have the full trilogy. Let's hope I like it! I also bought Crashing Heaven for a bit of cyberpunk.

message 977: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I also bought The Darwin Elevator as it was only 99p and I remember Cherie's status updates from when she read the series.

message 978: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60116 comments I got The Queen of the Tearling and The Invasion of the Tearling for $1.99 on iBooks. Apparently, the offer is available on Kindle and Kobo too according to Book Bub.

message 979: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Bella wrote: "If you could buy used ebooks that were priced like used books, I don't know how I could control myself. Space and money are the only things restraining me from buying thousands of books a year..."

I agree, Bella. If I could only read what I already have and get rid of them, I would be happy, but I keep getting more.

message 980: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments Cherie, do you have a getting rid of books problem, too? We're thinking of moving in the next few years to places where it's more expensive. So we are going to have to downsize. Which means getting rid of some, small, tiny part of my book collection, I guess.

So my husband pulls a book off the shelf and said, "Didn't you hate this book? I think you said it was a zero star book and that the author was a talentless hack. So, why don't you go through your books and put all the ones you hated into a box and I'll drop them off at the library."

I kind of freaked out and he didn't understand why. "Why would you want to keep books you hate?"

"Because they're my books." (I may have screeched at him and stomped off.)

message 981: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19340 comments I have a small "library" in my house now due to having that same problem, Bella.

message 982: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee We all do that .. If only I could exchange the ones I didn't like for other books .. Then I don't mind ..

message 983: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Oct 17, 2015 05:03AM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11316 comments Bella, I usually pass the books to people I think might like them. The rest I put in one of the 4 free little library we have in the area.

And for the books you still didn't read, you might do a personal 2016 challenge for reading them. ;)

message 984: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments Bella wrote: "I kind of freaked out and he didn't understand why. "Why would you want to keep books you hate?" "Because they're my books." (I may have screeched at him and stomped off.) ..."

Totally understandable. If someone suggested that to me, I would give him or her the evil eye (after all, hoarding is an inborn trace, not ingrained ;-)))... )

message 985: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Bella, I don't have a problem getting rid of books I didn't like. I do have a problem giving up the ones I loved. I donate my books to my library to raise money for new books when I can bring myself to part with them. Some I give to people to read and tell them to pass them on.
Easy to do with printed books, but the ebooks live on in my archive. I do reread them sometimes.

message 986: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I just treated myself to a few books for my birthday. So far i have bought Sandman Slim, The Twelve and Leviathan Wakes.

YAY! Enjoy. Best gift ever
(in my experience, reader's friends never have the "bright" idea of giving books as gifts... They rack their brains thinking, what were a good gift for you, but they never see the obvious... Therefore, we must treat ourselves appropriately )

People know I love to read and want to buy me books, but they're afraid to. They don't know what I've already read and are scared they'll get stuff I've already read. I'm amazed that no one thinks, "Gift certificates."

message 989: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I agree Mariab and Bella. A voucher to spend on books would be perfect.

message 990: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I usually ask for specific books or a books gift card if people ask me what I want for my birthday, but I get the feeling many people find it boring to give. My mother in law actually said last time 'books again? what's the fun in that? can't you think of something else?'

She's obviously not a reader.

message 991: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments Peggy wrote: "I usually ask for specific books or a books gift card if people ask me what I want for my birthday, but I get the feeling many people find it boring to give. My mother in law actually said last tim..."

I once directed people to my wish list somewhere- Amazon, BN?- and still, no books. Outrageous!

I think that people don't like giving gift cards to close friends and relatives because it's too impersonal. I don't know who started that. I'm from Hawaii, so people just give cash. It's like a train of cash flowing in a circle! (Unless you're a kid, then it just flows to you.)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments Spent my book voucher finally. Got all 4 for £17 photo f6a21645-b8fa-4176-bf15-abe8858e9120.jpg

message 993: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments The same thoughts are here Bella - gift vouchers are impersonal but I'd much rather that than a gift of books I'd never read or have already read.

You have some awesome picks there Sarah. 3 out of 4 of those were 5 star reads and made it on to my favourite shelf.

message 994: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I agree with Sarah. Loved 3 of the books too, don't know the third one.

Gift vouchers are kind of impersonal so usually I try to give some titles. Most common thing is cash here too.

message 995: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments Low Life: Drinking, Drugging, Whoring, Murder, Corruption, Vice and Miscellaneous Mayhem in Old New York by Luc Sante came up in a GR's recommendation. So I clicked the link to BetterWorld Books and found it was a Bargain Bin Book- around $3 if you buy 4 books. I had to buy it, even if I had no other books to buy because the only other copies start around $10.

But I checked my wishlist and I had 3 other books that were also in the Bargain Bin. So, I bought Underground London: Travels Beneath the City Streets by Stephen Smith; The Northern Lights: The True Story of the Man Who Unlocked the Secrets of the Aurora Borealis by Lucy Jago; and Praying For Sheetrock by Melissa Fay Greene (which was a National Book Award Finalist).

Since I bought 4 books, I saved about $4, so I also got a book that wasn't on sale since it was $4: The White Cascade: The Great Northern Railway Disaster and America's Deadliest Avalanche by Gary Krist

message 996: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) | 1302 comments I always ask for book vouchers, I prefer that as people alwasy tend to get me either a different edition/cover than I wanted or they get me a book I don't even want like Sarah said. The book vouchers in the UK via National Book Tokens, I feel like they are more personal cuz you can choose a particular colour and style for a gift. I think it can be much nicer than a standard paper voucher. But not sure what they do in other countries in terms of vouchers.

message 999: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Just been checking out the short story listopias for next months challenge which led me to buy Burning Chrome.

message 1000: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I just pre-order the Gillian Flynn short story The Grownup which is being released at the beginning of November. It's not totally new as it appeared in a short story collection by George R R Martin but I haven't read it and I don't necessarily want to get the collection just yet. I wish she'd just release a full length book already!

I also bought This Book Is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don't Touch It which is the follow up book to the one I'm currently reading.
