*cackles* Okay. Empire of the Vampire came up in my feed. I went to look at it and see if more friends have read it yet. Scrolled down and saw Kristoff's review. Which I had ignored, because I won't read the author review/notes before I read a book. He flat out says that it's not a YA and made a comparison to Interview with the Vampire and Name of the Wind.
... so, it made laugh, but also feel disappointed, because I could TOTALLY SEE ALL OF that in the story and it was not a positive comparison. Ya know? Like, the guy can write. He has talent for making emotions and actions pop off the page. I wish his style & flair of writing was more evident in the book. Maybe the next one will be better.
Current Audible 2-for-1 Sale:Dragon Prince #1 is a great book. I love the world that Rawn has created. No idea why an EPIC FANTASY novel is in the romance section of the sale. Also, the cover for the audiobook is HORRID. lol Talk about bad art.
However, the book is good. It's on my maybe buy list for me to use as a re-read.
Here's what I got from the latest Audible Sale: There are a LOT of good books in SF/F & Mystery sections. I have most of those. =)
- Dry
- Rule of Wolves #2
- In Fury Born #1
- The Dirty Streets of Heaven #1
- The Dagger of Adendigaeth #2
- Belgarath the Sorcerer (Re-read/Love Series)
These are like historical epics. I've had my eye on them for a while and they pop up on sale every other year or so. Almost 100 hrs for 1 credit. Bwahahahahha
- The Far Pavilions
- Kristin Lavransdatter
I have a few others that I am eyeballing to get on sale as re-reads and new ones to try out. Like there's a samurai one, but I'm going to skim read the ebook (yay library) to make sure I'm interested in the writing before throwing money at it.
Yea, I still remember Dry… super scary how quick society breaks down, when you lose trust in group survival…
read City of Endless Night today... almost done now...
Weird book... kinda disappointed by the ending so far... Pendergast is usually more able to outsmart his enemies, and this one doesn't particularly feel worthy of besting him as much as he did...
Also, kinda feel bad for the journalist, even if I didn't like him in earlier books when the other journalist was alive... hopefully the identity of the baddie helps him get out of jail, and out from under the faked embezzlement...
I liked how the near riot played out... thought the plotline was overused when it was introduced, but resolved much better than last time it was used...

Pendergast stories have an odd roller coaster quality to the writing, but it's probably due to the authors not understanding how to really weave true elements into a great fictional tale. I consider them to be solid to great popcorn reads. It's not as moving as Charlie Parker and super gritty like Lucas Davenport. Consistently entertaining but with a fair share of eyerolls. lol
I loved David & Leigh Eddings books, because they write great characters that I really enjoyed reading about when I was a kid. The writing has mild modern take on dialogue, but it's not in a way that bothered me when I read & re-read the books. Thank goodness that I've read Belgareth many times before listening to the audiobook. The audiobook makes the story pacing uneven, the characters are too modern, it seems like it's not an unabridged version and the characters come across as flat. Bleah
Well, at least I know to be careful in getting the audiobooks for the Eddings series. That narrator is okay, but totally makes the epic fantasy story sound like UF.

Haven't read that one yet... for a second, I thought you meant Driving the Deep, the Finder Chronicles book...

Good description :D
One upside for me, was that this one didn't have any Chong-Ra, with the exception of some descriptions early on that Pendergast used to zen meditate his way past his Constance-induced melancholy...

Loving Killfile Soo. Farnsworth is a fantastic author. I loved the President's Vampire series and sort of never looked at his other works after. Thanks for the recommendation Soo

:( :( :(
City of Endless Night was a pretty perfect Pendergast book, for me, until that last 10%... between the baddie, as mentioned above, and that last page or 2 (view spoiler)

No, but it's on my TBR - list.

I think I heard you guys say the character names were all German words and meanings, when we were reading Manifest Delusions... but I didn't realize how widespread and literal it all was, until Rob linked this reddit thread in the ongoing BR thread a few minutes ago (Rob and Laura Tenfingers are reading it right now)...

I had a friend post about that when he saw that I read the book. To be honest, the narrator was good but he wasn't that great with the German names sounding German. lol
I only realized words like Geisterkranken were German... I missed the fact half the other words were...

Manners & Monsters is free for Kindle US so I downloaded it :) If it's second half of October I should be able to join. Are we going to reuse the old Gail Carriger thread or start a new one?

We should start a new thread... we missed our chance to rebrand the Gail Carriger thread as a steampunk thread when the "2nd Years" claimed it for another round of Parasol Protectorate Buddy Reads... not sure if they're moving on to Finishing School next, or not, but they're starting Blameless or Timeless soon, I think...

We're starting 'Blameless' next Monday. Sorry for hacking the Gail Carriger thread ;)Maybe we should start a new thread, indeed. What about the 15th?
Sounds good... make it an official steampunk thread, and we can use it for other stuff after... altho the only other steampunk series I really advocate for are the Gail Carriger books and the Agatha Heterodyne/Girl Genius novelizations... so hard to find Steampunk series I want to read...
I still need to read True Bastards with Siobhan, hopefully soon... so if you want to read immediately, you should just go ahead without me... is anyone else here reading the series and I just jumped in assuming you were talking to me?
Finally reading Dead Lies Dreaming, the Laundry Files spinoff…
First 20-30% spends alot of time setting up these new characters, but now stuff is happening and there seems to be alot of connections between the characters…
I’m most interested in the House… it’s like House of Leaves with a time travel element… but the plot seems more focused on the Necronomicon heist…

OOO - I'm going to see if my library has it. Aw no go with my library for Dead Lies Dreaming.
Let us know if you like the wrap up!
Totally thought you’d read it already… this is a series I think will continue after main series ends… tons of references and callbacks to the main series… and I think some implications for the main series endgame/finale…
Around 90% now, and it’s turned into one of those assassin action comedies where there are like 5-10 factions fighting for one target and end up killing one another instead…
Fairly sure the con-artist kid MCs are going to end up working with cop Wendy in future books… they have cool pretty non-violent superpowers that are incredibly useful…

Added to the TBR. Hopefully, it will go on sale on Audible/etc. I've been reading the Stross books via library. The first book for Laundry Files took a hella long time for me to get into the story, because the tone is so dry for the first book. It's one of those series that's worth making the effort to continue.

Yea... I gave Laundry Files a try on your recommendation and love the series... I had to buy Dead Lies Dreaming on Audible as well... most other stuff is available on Hoopla...

Started HLHank3: Prince of Suck… 50-60 year time jump surprised me… also explains Hank’s exaggerated cover art, as his healing downsides reach terminal levels (heals denser every time injured… eventually heart will be too dense to pump blood)
Narilka wrote: "Thread created: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...I listed Oct 15 until we refine the date :)"
Thanks, Narilka!
I kinda feel like Hank is in the wrong in this book… still fun… don’t think Hank is meant for official leadership positions… better as an unofficial fixer/negotiator…
Finished Hank 3... I figured out or suspected most elements of the story halfway through... was still fun...
Can also see why people complained of the Deux Ex Machina in the epilogue... brought back an OP character from the first book to fix Hank's medical problems and give him a new lease on life, until he reinjures and heals himself back to near-death in 60+ years...

Gotta admit that you should expect corny plot twists for that series though, right? =) So, well within the story boundaries.

Yea... Hank is a bit of a thug that muscles his way through his problems... paradigm shifts usually happen almost randomly, not so much because Hank sought to change the game... outside factors... and he's super-impulsive... paroling the worst criminals and turning them into an army to fight another threat... etc

Saga of the Skolian Empire series is on Audible Plus. Go in publication order and most of the books are on there. It's a more personal take of epic space opera with some romance.
Stayed up way too late reading When Sorrows Come yesterday… October Daye #15… it was a weird one… even Toby was a bit blasé about the dangers and risk of death, lol… enemies and Doppelgangers are trying to overthrow the High King of the Westlands/Americas, and it’s just another day at “the office” at this point… a day that Toby happens to be trying to get married… which gave her a bit of plot armor to avoid any really debilitating injuries that would have delayed the wedding… the final battle mid-wedding ceremony was cool tho… and the foreshadowing of secrets yet to be revealed… had to read the wedding reception novella… wasn't included on audio
Started reading itMedusa Uploaded... I picked it up on Audible sale months ago... it's such a mashup of other things I've read and watched.... near the end already...
It's done a really good job of skirting the line of too much foreshadowing that I complained about with Along the Razor's Edge... such an intangible thing that's hard to describe... but when it's done well you can tell, vs badly...

I've been trying to hack at the older audiobooks on my list. You know how you get all caught up in trying to read the "new" books vs whatever you have. XDThe Quantum Magician - Read it already in March, but doing a re-read because I only remember parts of the story. The first time around, it took several tries for me to get into the groove for the story. Much easier this time around! Since I've already read it, it's easier to appreciate nuances vs getting info organized. More humor and nice links to appreciate vs the first time when stuff came across as too dramatic.
Then I'll dive into #2 of the series. #3 is out. Depending on #2, I may snag #3.
