RETIRED THREAD: Vagabond Treehouse Book Club
Jerusalem sounds interesting, and long... I couldn't imagine trying to read a 60hr audiobook within the 3 week deadline of Hoopla, if I happened to need a break at some point...
$5 for 3 book compilation is a good deal. =)I bought Jerusalem several years ago and haven't read it yet. Since I'm back to hiking/climbing, it's nice to have audiobooks lined up to read.
Found a bunch of great stories on my library & I've been switching between library & my audiobooks. Need to get in a few KU+RL and that makes me feel like I get my money's worth on paying for KU. Though, honestly, last year I felt like I got my money's worth from doing the KU borrow & buying audiobooks for $7.49 or less.
Audible Plus has been a nice addition. I've read more good books on there than bad.

I know when you borrow a book from the library (physical books), you can re-check it out when the loan expires. Pretty sure that works for electronic loans too.
The CW is wide open, with Supernatural done and over with... and they love comics... not sure the gritty anti-hero vibe would work for them, unless they lightened it up a bit...
Brian and anyone else, if you haven't read Gentleman Bastards, you should. =DThe books/audio are probably at your library. =D
The Lies of Locke Lamora #1
I wasn’t a fan of the narrator when I listened too book 1. I was gonna try again on print or kindle.
You don't like Michael Page? He's better than Michael Kramer. Kramer makes me want to claw his nose off. May try listening to it at faster speed if you try the audio.
The story is great! I forgot how much of a precious brat Locke was as a kid. It's been a long time since I've read these books. #4 comes out this year and it looks like the author is planning to write a bunch more in the series. There's been a lot of years since #3 and the release of #4.
I did Gentleman Bastards traditional way. Loved the first book. Thought they progressively declined in quality though. I'll be watching for friends reviews before trying #4, assuming it releases this year as planned.
I don't see any news that the publication date has changed for #4. Though, I did see that it was supposed to have come out in 2016. Hahaha! Woah, long time.
I’m quite certain Rothfuss and GRRM will not complete their series’s. Rothfuss just looks angry and depressed, especially when asked when his books coming and GRRM is so busy working on movie deals in don’t think he has the time.

Lynch is terrible at deadlines... and suffers depression... and there was a scandal last year with extramarital shenanigans with an indie author him and/or his wife were "mentoring"... complicated stuff, possible open marraige, etc... indie author felt taken advantage of for writing mentorship...

Rothfuss has recently confirmed there will be a 4th book... so book 3 is probably coming, sooner than later, at this point...

Gollancz hasn't updated release date since 2018 (publisher and source of publishing news, even for Orion and Hachette)...
Amazon says 2009 for some reason...
Google books says 2024...
Goodreads shifted the date from August to October...
Most other sites don't even bother listing it, yet...

I think I'll believe the Thorn of Emberlain's publication date when I see physical copies in the store lol That's a lot of random dates Iain.
Gentleman Bastards is one of the few series/authors that stayed on my TBR after the whole mentoring/sexual harassment/etc scandals. I purged several authors from my To Read list because the writing isn't good enough to ignore the actions/attitudes. Normally, I ignore the bad press & just read the books because I like the stories. Authors can be crappy humans and still write a good yarn. Well, I hope #4 comes out this year. The series list has a bunch of books added to it that wasn't there before.
I think GRRM doesn't know how he wants to wrap the series up and procrastinating until it clicks for him.
As for Rothfuss, I prefer that he takes his time and write a good story vs rushing to meet deadlines. He took over a decade to write the Name of the Wind. Wise Man's Fear was good but it didn't have the depth & layers that I enjoyed in #1. It's interesting that there's talk about a fourth book. I heard rumors that TKC was supposed to be a trilogy.
The Left-Handed Booksellers of London - I got this one from the library and it was great! Excellent UF adventure story with a nice start and satisfying ending. It ended up being a fav before I finished it. =) Highly recommend if you're in the mood for a one book adventure.
Soo wrote: "The Left-Handed Booksellers of London - I got this one from the library and it was great! Excellent UF adventure story with a nice start and satisfying ending. It ended up being a f..."I have that in my TBR :) I'll have to bump it up in the list.
I read the 3rd Last Hunter book... probably the first time I kinda wanted to continue after...
The opening felt like a bit of a step back for Solomon, just so he could re-tread the same character development early in the 3rd book... but then things picked up steam... (view spoiler)

Soo wrote: "Brian, did you end up reading all of the Last Hunter? =D"I did. Overall it was a strange series of books but there was enough likable moments and scenes to keep me at 3 stars.
Oh... didn't realize Brian continued without us... half the reason I waited so long to continue was because Brian was the impetus for book 2...
I picked up what I hope will be two fun books in the 2-for-1 sale. Which do you recommend I start first? Space Team or The Case of the Damaged Detective?

Space Team is great fun (in small doses, in my case) with a great narrator who has fun with it... later books have bloopers at the end... there's also many more books to follow after...
Damaged Detective is a Sherlock series from Drew Hayes, and I like it, but we're only gonna be getting a second book sometime this year... it's an Audible Original series, so I don't think it's available in print...

Wandering Inn book 3 is scheduled for audio release April 27th, and has a real title: Flowers of Esthelm... only 35hrs, so I think it's only half of volume 3?...

Narilka wrote: "I picked up what I hope will be two fun books in the 2-for-1 sale. Which do you recommend I start first? Space Team or The Case of the Damaged Detective?"Both are good! I say go with mood. Space Team is has solid plot & goofy-dorky humor. Detective has interesting plot, a little humor because the detective is VERY quirky and has mostly a serious but not serious tone.
#2 for Damaged Detective is out. Hopefully #3 will come out in a year or two.
Wandering Inn Vol3 was split into 2 parts. That way Andrea Parsneau could get the work in with her other commitments. =)
I suspect the other volumes will also be split up to make it easier to record. They get longer. Hahahahah
I went ahead and started Space Team. That mixed up identity just saved Cal's life. He seems like he's up for the job though, whatever it is.
Narilka wrote: "I went ahead and started Space Team. That mixed up identity just saved Cal's life. He seems like he's up for the job though, whatever it is."Space Team in my opinion is a hidden gem. I think I did six books in a row before I took a break from it. Splurt is my fav

Everyone loves Splurt~! =D
I keep imagining him as Slimer's cousin.
Didn't realize 5 minute sherlock 2 was out already... last I checked was when I read Hayes' 2020 retrospective blog post around New Year...
I read the 2nd book and enjoyed it... vaguely felt like a funner Horrorstor, for some reason...
Looking forward to Forging Hephaestus and the sequel next month... last Hayes series I haven't read yet...

Horrorstor could have been AMAZING and it was just whatever. The author was way too busy making fun of Ikea-ness & corporations. 2nd 5 Min Sherlock was fun. Definitely a setup book for future shenanigans.
Read Laundry Files 3.5: short story about a Santa-demon apocalypse... now I’m finally continuing with Don’t Tell my Parents I’m a Supervillain 2 on Hoopla: Don’t Tell My Parents I Blew Up the Moon...
Planning to read this series sporadically since reviews seem to indicate the first book and prequel were the best of the bunch...

The Monstrumologist #1 ~ Woo! What a ride! It's categorized under YA & Fantasy but it's really a horror story. Slow buildup that has YA tones because Will Henry is 14 and the story is told from mostly his POV. I thought it was really well done. Smart writing that lures you into complacency and then smacks you in your face with some deep horrors. Like the show Grimms or Supernatural without the jokes. Loved the story. It was better than the blurb. Ended up being a fav and I went ahead & got the rest of the series to read.

I dunno how you find time to go through the neverending litany of audible sales, your library's catalog, do all your reading, your other projects, etc etc etc...
I was inspired by you, tho, and after finding a couple interesting books on your list, looked through the rest on audible, too...
Some, tho, I just noted I could check out later on hoopla... like Dave Robicheaux
