The house isn't insulated at all so it's hard to keep it warm when it's this cold. It's only been in the 50s in here all day.

Joanna But at least the sun came out!! It was cloudy for over a week, so that was really nice! 😊

You poor dears!
How do you manage it?
The same here, it was 50Β°F today
and overnight only in the thirties.
We're keeping a couple of thermoses
full of piping hot tea. The less one comes
out of a warm and cozy corner, the better.

πŸ˜‚ We just wear a lot of layers. I have to remind myself that our house is still a lot warmer than people used to have...we are truly spoiled!

50 in TX! Is that autumn weather or is it officially winter now?

For us it's winter, in autumn it's in the 60s.
From that perspective, thank God you all
aren't living the Walden experiment.

Joanna I love this version of 'We are Coming Father Abra'am' with the music by L. O. Emerson. Supposedly this is actually the more popular tune, but I've only heard the one by Stephen Foster (which I also like)!

I've copied the link where the music starts, but the introduction is really good too if you've got time. πŸ˜„

Pamela | 2209 comments On a serious and miraculous note, once again I am thankful for the blessing of my cat, Sarah, the one who was my dad's cat. At two o'clock this morning she jumped on me while I was sleeping and started smacking me in the face...quite hard, but without extending her claws. I didn't fully wake up right away, so she jumped down and started dragging rugs around and flipping her food dish loudly. She jumped back on me and smacked me and then grabbed my hair and pulled it. I woke up fully then, felt dizzy, and had blurry vision. I tested my blood sugar and it was under 50. Way too low and a medical emergency! I ate candy, cake, even pizza, and drank regular sugared soda. It took a couple of hours for my sugar to rise, so I know it was a bad situation! If not for Sarah, I would not be typing this message. Once again, my sweet little angel saved me! Feeling soooo thankful for her! She's my little lifesaver! πŸ™πŸˆπŸ™πŸˆπŸ™πŸˆπŸ™

I'm much better this morning! Not sure what happened yesterday, as my numbers were low all day. Our good neighbors, Zack & Renee, stopped in last night. They gave us a gift card to the grocery store and a beautiful centerpiece for the table. It's a lantern with cardinals inside and snow swirls all around when it's turned on. It also lights up! So beautiful! I told my mom I would rather watch that than TV! The cats love it, too!

We are having frozen fog this morning, so I plan to stay home. The roads are slick. A rainy Christmas is expected here. πŸ™ So tired of dreary weather. At least I feel better today.😊

Pamela | 2209 comments I thought this was interesting. Evidently, Emily Dickinson baked "Black Cake" each Christmas. They included the details in the play "The Belle of Amherst"...

THE BELLE OF AMHERST

In 1976, William Luce’s play about Emily Dickinson,Β The Belle of Amherst,Β opened on Broadway. Julie Harris, who starred in it, won a Tony for her performance.

In the play, β€œEmily Dickinson” recites the actual recipe for a black cake: β€œtwo pounds of flour, two pounds of sugar, two pounds of butter, nineteen eggs, five pounds of raisins, one and a half pounds of currants, one and a half pounds of citron, one half pint of brandy β€” I never use Father’s best β€” one half-pint of molasses, two nutmegs, five teaspoons of cloves, mace and cinnamon, and β€” oh, yes, two teaspoons of soda, and one and a half teaspoons of salt.”

Remember, 19th-century bakers used to do a lot of baking all at once.

Then β€œEmily” goes onΒ to tell the audienceΒ to beat the butter and sugar together, add the 19 eggs one at a time without beating. Beat again, adding the brandy alternately with the flour, soda, spices and salt, which have all been sifted together. Then add molasses. Take the raisins and citrons and gently sprinkle into the batter. Bake for three hours if you use cake pans, six or seven if you use a milk pan.
