Pammy Jo,
You must have been thrilled to
learn that two great grand uncles
we're in Civil War; it certainly makes
it more personal. Does your family
have photos as well?

Really?! (Dorry sees a grammatical error 😂)

I knew she would!!! Is that your mom and you in the pic?

Oh I'm sorry! I hope you didn't take that offensive!!! I was just on your blog yesterday, and I saw a pic of your mom, and I guess it's her you look so much like! Well you both are very pretty!!

HAHAHAHA!!! 😂

Emma, Dorry says you're mixed up. 😂 I didn't post a picture of my mom on my blog that I remember...and Dorry is the one who looks like her!

My goodness, you do!
She has penetrating eyes.
Are they from the Norwegian line?
Who does Dorothy resemble?"
No, they were German. I'm actually a little confused about where the Swedish line comes in...I'll have to look into that!
Dorry looks more like our mom's side of the family.

That's so neat - we have German roots too!

OHH!! My hole is just getting bigger and bigger!! I'm so sorry! Okay, I think I have it straight now! 😂😂😂

No photos from that side of my family (my Dad's) but lots from my Mom's side. My Mom's family settled in this area prior to the Revolutionary War. The original homestead remained in my family until 1988, when my great aunt and uncle sold it b/c of health issues. My mom has no siblings, her aunt & uncle had no children, and I have no sibling, either. I ended up with the family heirlooms and I treasure them so much! I am a mixed bag...German, Polish, Austrian and British. I recently found out that my German family still has some roots in Germany (Bavaria). They have a family business making Bavarian furniture and nutcrackers. I've loved nutcrackers and the Nutcracker Ballet since childhood, before I knew about my Bavarian relatives...I'm convinced nutcrackers must be in my blood!
( or was my attraction simply caused because I AM a nut??? ) Who knows? : 0

Then were nuts along with you.😄
I love to see the Nutcracker at
Christmas. If you should ever visit
Texas, the Hill Country has a large
Polish & German community-
it's beautiful in the spring and fun
in the fall.
Since before the Revolutionary
War. Bliss!
Have you visited the old homestead
since then?
There could be genealogical records ,
photos or articles available.
I would love to have such roots.
Bavaria must be fun at Christmas
with the markets and festivities.

Well I hope so! 😂

So your family must have come over about the same time as ours did! How special that your family passed the original homestead down through so many generations. I've seen several places that were in our family, but never lived in any. We are quite a mix too. German, Swiss, Irish, Swedish...

Well I hope so! 😂"
Yes! Sorry about that!!

Ruth,
The Homestead was my second home growing up! I loved it so and it hurt me so much when it was sold. I slept over very often and as my aunt and uncle still had many of the original furnishings, I always slept in my great-grammy, Cora's bed! I was blessed to have known all of my great- grandparents until I was in my twenties (both sides of the family) and I dearly loved all of them! I do miss them!
I also see The Nutcracker every year! I even named my cat Clara!
I live very close to the Polish American shrine, Our Lady of Czestochowa and go there often. At Christmas, I love to visit their gift shop and always pick up some Polish ornaments and such. They also have a cafeteria where they have the best pierogies and other Polish foods. Oh, how I love pierogies...and they are homemade, too!
Pamela

"Or, talking of old home scenes, Op der Graaf
Teased the low back-log with his shodden staff,
Till the red embers broke into a laugh
And dance of flame, as if they fain would cheer
The rugged face, half tender, half austere,
Touched with the pathos of a homesick tear!"

🎉Your Connection!!!!!🎉
How Grand is that!
Those are words worth framing. 😃

That's so interesting, Meg! Germantown is not far from where I live. My area was founded by Quakers and many were involved in the Underground Railroad. How wonderful that your ancestor cared so much about slavery! Family history is a fascinating thing to learn about!
Pamela

Yes it is! 😊 I'm terrible at remembering how everyone is related, but I love the stories and our family heirlooms.

Pamela

Congratulations, Pamela! 😊 I remember doing that...very tedious, but satisfying when it's done!

I actually just noticed that you did that Pamela! It looked very nice and organized!!

Congratulation, Pamela!
It's so satisfying to see the shelves
complete.

Just wanted to share something amazing:
Some of you know that I'm diabetic and take insulin 4x/day. Last night I injected my bedtime dose and turned in early as I was very tired. Around 3:00 a.m. this morning I woke to my cat sitting on my chest, crying and hitting my face with her paws ( not scratching, just batting at me). I knew right away that something was wrong...felt dizzy and my vision was not quite right. I tested my glucose level right away....my blood sugar was only 50! Dangerously low! I ate candy, drank regular soda and ate a donut. In a little while my blood sugar rose back up to a safe level (50 is WAY too low)!
My cat never does what she did this morning. I am convinced that she sensed I was in trouble and reacted by waking me! I really could have gone into a diabetic coma in my sleep if not for my fur-baby!
Anyway, I feel grateful this morning and truly believe I'm not in the hospital, or worse, because my cat took action!
Feeling amazed and so very, very grateful today!!!!! All because of my cat, Sarah! (I was only diagnosed 2 years ago, so am still fairly new to all of this diabetes mess, but I do notice my sugar level drops a bit when the weather is hot & humid. Never this low, though).
Pamela Jo~She who is thankful!

Oh my, what a good kitty!!! That is truly amazing...I'm so glad you have her. Cats are wonderful creatures.
Still very scary though. Do you need to find out why your sugar went so low? I hope you're alright! 🤗

Good little kitty! Animals are so smart. We used to have a cat who would lie on our chests when we had a cold. Once he did it before I knew I had one!

Hi Meg!
I talked to my doctor this morning. He thinks I'm being TOO careful about my blood sugar and need to eat more snacks between meals, especially in the evening. At least while it's so hot. He also thinks b/c of the heat, all the water I'm drinking is flushing the sugar out of my body. I do drink a lot of water, so to make up for that I will snack a little more. We'll see if it helps.
Thanks to all for your kind words! I appreciate it so much!

Oh yes, that makes sense. I'm glad it's probably something that simple!

My cat was very attached to my dad. For a whole week before my dad had a fatal stroke, the cat (Sarah) acted strange. She didn't put her tail up and didn't eat much. I think she sensed something was wrong. She was alone with my dad when he had the stroke. My mom found him when she got home from work. He lived for 2 days. Sarah started pulling her hair out the day he went to the hospital. The vet checked everything, but found nothing physically wrong with Sarah. The vet said it seemed as though Sarah suffered the cat version of a nervous breakdown and gave her anxiety medication and even aromatherapy to calm her. She improved, but to this day she gets very very upset whenever she hears an ambulance going by. She is super emotional and sensitive.
Pamela

That is so sad and sweet Pamela!

Exactly right, Emma. Sad, yet sweet that Sarah is so "in tune" to us. She's the most loving cat we've ever had. My Clara is a sweet cat, too...but Clara is all about Clara! In fairness, Clara was born with Ectrodactyly...or "lobster claw" on her left paw. She only has 2 large toes and her nails grow up instead of down. She had to fight for survival in her litter of siblings. The SPCA gave her to me and waived the adoption fee b/c nobody else wanted her. They were ready to put her down, but I saw her online, called them about her and they kept her for me. It was the night before Thanksgiving and I couldn't pick her up until that Friday. They called her Clubbie b/c of her "club foot" which I thought was hurtful, so I kept the CL sound and renamed her Clara...from The Nutcracker! She was young and adjusted to the name right away, She's really perfect to me!
Pam

Aww that's so sweet! Your cats are so lucky to have you! ❤️

Clara's story is so sad...I hate to see a cat suffer.

You would never know that Clara is disabled except to look at her foot. She adjusted well. In fact she is tougher than the average cat. I think she had to be to to survive in the litter of siblings. I got her just before her first bithday. She is very independent, but still sweet! Just not as focused on others as Sarah is. As I like to say, Clara's a real pistol!

I can't believe it either, Ruth! I feel as though she saved me this morning! I am feeling just fine now, but it was scary!
Pam

And I am lucky to have them. I feel especially grateful today!
