Task 3: A Collection of Short Stories
I'm planning on The Empathy Exams: Essays, but I've been wanting to get into short stories more for a while. Can't wait to see what other people are reading!
This totally gives me an excuse to buy Almost Famous Women: Stories
I've been dying to read this since Rebecca first mentioned it months ago!
Deciding between Redeployment by Phil Klay and Thunderstruck by Elizabeth McCracken, which could not be at further ends of the funny/depressing spectrum. Guess it will depend on what kind of mood I'm in when I get to this task :)
Margaret Atwood just released her first short story collection in several years, Stone Mattress: Nine Tales. I've had Atwood on my radar for a long time but never actually read anything by her, so this will be a good way to get into her books.
Complete Short story collection by flannery oconnor has been tragically sitting on my tbr shelf for years.
Kathryn wrote: "I've owned a copy of The Stories of John Cheever for decades and never read it. No more excuses."Eek me too. I have it in the giant orange hardback. It keeps staring at me from my bookshelves.

I have the mass market, equally orange and teeny tiny print. o.O
Just got a couple collections of F. Scott Fitzgerald's short stories, so either Flappers and Philosophers or Tales of the Jazz Age
Melissa wrote: "Deciding between Redeployment by Phil Klay and Thunderstruck by Elizabeth McCracken, which could not be at further ends of the funny/depressing spectrum. Guess it will depend on what kind of mood ..."I read both this year and you can't go wrong with either.
The Adventures and the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. It's been standing on my shelf for months - I can't believe I haven't read it yet!
I plan to read FAMILY FURNISHINGS by Alice Munro. I loved DEAR LIFE and have wanted to read more of her work.
I plan on reading hateship, frienship, courtship, loveship by Alice Munro, or Tenth of December by George Saunders. I am trying to read all of the challenges from my TBR pile, and it appears I can. Wow - I have way too many books.
don't we all. Maybe you can find the last 4 at the library and then it will be a no spend win, too. Well. except for all the others you can't resist buying LOL
I recently acquired Adaptions: From Short Story to Big Screen (35 great stories that have inspired great films). Its a long one, but I'm going to go for it.
I'm planning on reading Cat Stories as my first challenge (I'm not doing them in order), as soon as I finish Hogfather :)
Sigh.. I could absolutely not wait to start reading some of my Christmas/birthday presents (lots of bookish delights!), so I just started Cat Stories as my pick for this category. Looking good so far :)
This will be the first task I'll do. I'll read Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri. I haven't read a short story collection in a really long time, so I'm excited to see how this goes.
The Decline of Pigeons Downers Grove, IL author. There is a playlist associated with this for any interested.
I shall take on Dubliners by James Joyce. I am of Irish descent and will be going to Dublin on my honeymoon in May so this seemed like an appropriate choice.
I'm planning to read Fragile Things: Short Fictions and Wonders by Neil Gaiman because I already own a copy.
Clémence wrote: "I'm planning to read Fragile Things: Short Fictions and Wonders by Neil Gaiman because I already own a copy."I love Neil Gaiman but have not read any short stories by him. This one is going on my TBR.
Brianna wrote: "I love Neil Gaiman but have not read any short stories b..."You can also try Smoke and Mirrors, I already read it, it's awesome ! I actually discovered Neil Gaiman with it.
The Cleverness of Ladies - Alexander McCall-SmithSmall cheat as I did start this before Christmas and forgot about it until I started checking my bookshelves to see what I have already got for this challenge
I just fell into completing this one. I borrowed Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys from the library at Christmas but only started it today. I love it when books I want to read make completing a task easier than I thought it was going to be.
I've spent the day reading. Great first day of the year! Read my book for this task. Homeland And Other Stories by Barbara Kingsolver, who is one of my favorite authors.
Finishing the DRC galley of Almost Famous Women: Stories - definitely recommend it! (and it's not very long!)

It is on my TBR list now. Thanks!
On Jan 1 I read The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher - I had only read her novels before (Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies) - I really enjoyed these short stories. She is a wonderfully polished writer who never uses a superfluous word or phrase - yet is a master of the telling detail.
Would a book of short essays, true stories, qualify or does this need to be fiction? I'm thinking about reading Bad Feminist.
My mother she killed me,my father he ate me. Retold fairy stories edited by Kate Bernheimer. Some of the stories a bit too edgy even for me and I read LOTS of horror.pb.
Oh, dear. I am one story away from finishing "Bark" by Lorrie Moore, and I am not enjoying it. I'm going to try another short story collection: "This Is How You Lose Her" by Junot Diaz
I was going to read "Babylon Revisited" for this category but decided to go with Nam Le's "The Boat". Just visited tonight; highly recommended. He's such a vivid, lyrical writer.
Would "Olive Kitteridge" count for this category? It sounds like it's several short stories wound around the same character?
Here is something a little different, if you like the fantasy genre -
with stories selected by Neil Gaiman.
