Same thing in CT. Only they are closing at 8PM.

I am guessing that the thought is that they will all take extra precautions and limit contact with others? It will still drastically limit interactions.

Anita Pomerantz | 9287 comments Maryland is also shutting down everything - - bars, restaurants, gyms (UGH), movie theaters - - starting at 5 pm today.

However, I went to the grocery store and that was busy as all get out for 8 am. That's just going to get 10x worse if all the restaurants are closed.

And there are elderly people working there which made me nervous for them . . .

SouthWestZippy | 1543 comments We are a family of six and one dog. I have always keep a little extra stock of must have things all year round, doing this has saved us. We have not done any of the panic buying(so far) and have been able to get what we need as we need it, so far. Normally I do all the shopping but I shop on days and at times when few people shop. I am not able to do the shopping now due to my own health issues that I can't expose myself to the large crowds so it all lays on my husband and daughter to do this job. They are a true blessing.
I have seen the good and bad in people with all that is going on. It is going to be interesting now with the new closing. A lot of our mom and pop restaurants are staying open but doing take out/delivery only.

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments Indiana just went to drive-thru / carryout only.

I would prefer a little inconvenience now, and overly cautious, than to continue to let it spread with reckless abandon.

Karin | 9227 comments Okay, yesterday Massachusetts suspended all public and private schools for 3 weeks, until April 6. March 17-April 6 restaurants will be take out only, and public gatherings have been limited to 25 people. Pharmacies can make and sell hand sanitizer over the counter, they have increased the places with visitor limitations and all hospitals MUST cancel non-essential elective procedures.

There are other things as well, and there were earlier announcements that didn't apply to us.

But so far, my library is open--I doubt many people will go there and won't be surprised if it closes soon as well. In fact, the 25 people rule starts tomorrow so perhaps tomorrow.

I didn't hear that part. Michigan's ban also extends to gyms and theaters which I didn't initially hear reported.
Stay healthy everyone!

Booknblues | 12089 comments Governor Newsom strongly suggested that if you are 65 or older you self isolate. I work in a community college preschool and we are not officially closed as of today. What group of people spreads disease more rapidly than preschoolers?

Their families which involve grandparents and infants are at risk.

I expect them to announce closure. I went to work for a few hours today and most children did not attend.

At this point, I'm home, until things change.

I'm sorry for the disappointment if you decide to stop buying. And, yes these reasons are exactly why I try really hard to not buy things with palm oil (but it's so hard to find things without!).

Today was the first day all our schools were closed. I also feel badly for any parents who have to work to get paid or don't have sick time or flex days or anything and will really have a hard time figuring out what to do if they have to work.

Day cares that take more than 6 kids also have to close.

LibraryCin | 11696 comments Anita wrote: "Maryland is also shutting down everything - - bars, restaurants, gyms (UGH), movie theaters - - starting at 5 pm today..."

For bars, restaurants here - the last I heard was that they are only allowed half their normal max limit of people, as long as it's under 250 (so 250 or half of their usual limit, whatever is less).

But, I think I heard that yesterday. Things change day-to-day and hour-to-hour.

ETA: I'm second-guessing myself. Until yesterday the largest gatherings allowed overall were 250, but I also thought I heard that had been lowered to 50. So, that makes me question the 250. Maybe the bigger places are still allowed that (if their usually max capacity is over 500) only because they presumably have more space to spread out?

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments Now this lockdown makes total sense (I did always understand it, but). There are now 7 staff on my son´s small boarding school sick with the virus. Everyone was sent home on thursday, so hopefully it ends there, but just imagine the spread on a school... (it´s about a third of staff).

Oh Johanne!
Will your son be tested? How scary. 2 teachers here in my area have tested positive-

message 170: by Johanne (last edited Mar 17, 2020 06:57AM) (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments They don´t test broadly in Denmark - don´t know why - just advice everyone who´s been in company with someone tested positive, or anyone suffering from the symptoms, to self-quarantine. We´ve been doing that since thursday anyway - with a couple walks outside with safe distance to others, and I´ve made a few trips to the grocery store, and washed hands before and after. So now we´ll see if he gets symptoms. And there´s no idea to isolate him from the rest of us in the family, since we´ve been together nonstop for five days. As long as we don´t see anyone else. It´s his birthday today and my mum suggested she should come by for coffee. I´m glad we said no, she´s healthy, but 72 and her and I (+2 of my sons - not the one at boarding school) always get effected in lungs and bronchia when it´s flu season. My oldest had a shift at the supermarket where he works an after school job, but he called his boss and now he stays home instead, just to be safe if he is a healthy carrier as a lot of teens can be. I´m feeling the pressure and I didn´t read one page yesterday...

Oregon here- we also have had our restaurants and bars shut, plus gatherings of 25+. This has been absolutely devastating for the industry. I work in a hotel with a restaurant, bar, and banquets. Literally had to call a bride whose wedding is this Saturday, and tell her we can't put on her wedding. She was in tears, I can't imagine someone telling me days before my wedding that it could not go on....

So many of my coworkers are filing for unemployment because we won't have enough hours doing carryout only. My (banquets and events) staff will have 0 hours the next 4 weeks... I'm fielding cancellations and postponements left and right. Many of these people work paycheck to paycheck. A huge hit for everyone.

Oh, that's awful... :-( One of my coworkers took two days off on Thurs/Fri last week, intending to fly to her cousin's wedding. When she went to board the plane, they told her her temperature was .5 degrees C above normal, so they wouldn't let her on the plane. (She is not sick!)

In any case, it got me thinking that this could be a bad time for a wedding. (Not that anyone would know that when they start planning...)

I just hope we pass through this quicker and healthier than has been expected. Love to all, Amy

That's funny. It took me a few seconds to figure out what groomzilla means. Is he upset about covid related issues, or was he always this way? Maybe he's afraid if the wedding is cancelled, she'll change her mind.

All good. I park my car close to the door and he is too chunky to get closer than the other side of the lux.
Did tell him to stop and not go near anyone else even if he hasn't got symptoms though cos if I had a small child in the house and he banged on my door I'd go nuclear. He got the "his own protection" side even if he didn't get why people would be upset.

He's always that way-even at their site tour he was talking over her, being a jerk, complaining about prices.

Sometimes crisis can bring out the best and the worst in the people. For this guy- it's definitely bringing out the worst in him. Generally speaking, I feel like I've been seeing so much good in people, restoring faith in humanity- restaurants giving kids lunches for free, stores creating hours for the elderly/immunocompromomised, business banning together to assist with delivery..... Lots of good happening in terrible times.

My daughter is also experiencing a similar let-down - she was invited to her boyfriend's birthday party (I was not sure I would let her go), then disinvited when the family decided to keep it family only due to Covid. I'm actually relieved that I didn't have to say no to her.
