Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 260 comments I am 55 pages away from finishing Treasure Island (still hope to do so before I go to sleep!) and have less than five hours left of The Grapes of Wrath.

Treasure Island works for Insects 1 (name), 7 (name) and 9 (name).

The Grapes of Wrath has ‘ants’ in the text, I came across it last night haha

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 260 comments I have also ticked off the 500 pages and 10 hours, as we reached both of those, so if we ever get stuck, that's two prompts we already don't have to worry about!

message 53: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Great work everyone! I got a lot of reading in today, both audio and print, will probably not have as much time to read tomorrow though.

I just finished Amok and put it down for "Spider Web". Quick and interesting read.

Kathryn | 563 comments Good work while I was sleeping, Frosted Flakes!!

And welcome to Erica - stay safe over there near the coronavirus epicentre!

I have just under 100 pages left on the book I'm reading - I'd like to say it will be finished when all the Europeans and Brits wake up, or at least by the end of my day...but I'm dragging my heels on this one, so no promises!

EDIT: The first of the team games is up, for anyone who hasn't noticed and is interested in playing along: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Goodnight everyone.
As expected I didn't have time to read today, but I did manage to listen to two hours of audio (I put it in the spreadsheet).
To the folks east of europe where it's morning: Have a great day of reading!

message 56: by Carmen (new)

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 260 comments Me, starting the final chapter of The Grapes of Wrath: Yaaayy I can add the book for ants!

Trish: Beatcha there!

I hope you don't mind I switched it around a bit, as my book can only count for 'ants' and The Count of Monte Cristo also counts for 'springtime'!

message 57: by Carmen (new)

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 260 comments We also hit 1000 pages and 20 hours of audio, meaning we have 2 more Wildcards!

We are now at 5/10 for Insects, and tomorrow I'll be finishing Treasure Island for sure. For that only 'grasshoppers' is still open, but perhaps by the time I've finished it, someone else will have covered that :)

Perhaps it's time to decide which level we do next, when Insects is finished :) ?

message 58: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 563 comments Carmen wrote: "Perhaps it's time to decide which level we do next, when Insects is finished :) ?"

We could do. Also what do people think - do we use our 4 wild cards now, once we've crossed off one more word/phrase, to finish this level now and move on, or do we want to keep them for potentially harder words in the next level? But as we keep going, we'll rack up more pages and audiohours anyway, so I guess we may as well use them, unless someone has a reason not to.

And looking at the next levels, it looks like we've got 5 books entered on the "dinosaur" tab and 6 on the "big cat" tab, but presumably any books on one tab can be transferred to another tab - provided there was somewhere for it to fit - and I can see some of them work when transferred, at least as far as author initials go...

Not a problem at all!

Lieke | 697 comments Good morning,
I finished Turning Darkness Into Light by Marie Brennan and added it to 4 Thorax.
It had the word in the text 😊
Now to decide what to read next....

message 63: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments Morning everyone!

I’ve nearly finished Burial Rites but I’m holding off on reading the last chapter because it doesn’t fit any of the remaining prompts for insects.

I’m about to go out and do some errands, so I’ll start a new audiobook whilst I’m out. Not quite sure which one yet ...

message 64: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments Kathryn wrote: "Carmen wrote: "Perhaps it's time to decide which level we do next, when Insects is finished :) ?"

I don’t think we should use the wild cards yet. There are a few people who have written on the spreadsheet that they think they will finish their books today, and these fit for some of the prompts that are still open. We also won’t get the next wildcards for quite a few more pages than we’ve currently read - I think the next wildcard for pages read is after 2500 pages, whereas we got two of our wildcards for reading 1000 pages total.

message 65: by Johanne (last edited Feb 23, 2020 02:26AM) (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments I think we should hold off using the wild cards for a couple of hours until we know if people are almost finished with a book that fit the remaining ones. And then a bit later in the day (european time) use them/ some of them and move on. How late is it in Australia and China (do we have other timezones than those and european in our group?)

And I say let's move on to large cats after that, since Hannah's book fit there and not in dinosaurs (at least as far as author name goes)

message 66: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments ... Agree with Hannah, I hadn't seen the pages read scale.

message 67: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 563 comments Hannah wrote: "We also won’t get the next wildcards for quite a few more pages than we’ve currently read - I think the next wildcard for pages read is after 2500 pages, whereas we got two of our wildcards for reading 1000 pages total...."

Good point - I hadn't noticed that either - for some reason I'd noticed the audiohours were even, and was assuming they were more evenly spaced for the pages as well!

Johanne wrote: "How late is it in Australia and China (do we have other timezones than those and european in our group?)...."

It's almost 9pm here in Brisbane and I think Adelaide (where Bec is) is 30 minutes behind us, and I think China (where Erica is) is an hour behind Brisbane (or is it ahead...? I vaguely remember from the Beijing Olympics). Not sure whether we've got anyone from any other time zones outside of Europe... But I will be heading to bed in an hour or so.

But yes, let's see how everyone's going later in the European day. Meanwhile, start thinking about

And I just finished a book that I realised the author name fitted for creepy crawling - I'd missed that initially!

message 68: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments let's make a decision about which level to move onto after insects, before your bedtime Kathryn.

Kathryn | 563 comments Johanne wrote: "let's make a decision about which level to move onto after insects, before your bedtime Kathryn."

Which level to move onto was what I was about to mention in my last post where I just dropped off! I'm watching Dancing With The Stars at the same time, so that's my excuse!

message 71: by Carmen (new)

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 260 comments Big Cats sounds good to me! I’ll be reading a Rick Riordan book so that would have roar covered!

Also agree we should wait with using wildcards for now 😊

message 72: by Carmen (new)

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 260 comments Also if Treasure Island fits for a Big Cats prompt, let me know (can’t check right now) because then I’ll wait with those last 55 pages!

message 73: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments @Carmen, author name rs fit several in the big cats

message 74: by Carmen (new)

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 260 comments Awesome, thankyou! I shall wait then, though it will be hard 😜

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Carmen wrote: "Big Cats sounds good to me! I’ll be reading a Rick Riordan book so that would have roar covered!

Good day, team! Ditto what Carmen said, I think the wildcards might be more needed for the Puppy and Dinosaur level possibly.

message 76: by Carmen (new)

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 260 comments I just noticed we only need two more for Insects so I won’t have to wait too long with finishing Treasure Island !

message 77: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 563 comments The next book I was planning to read doesn't seem to fit into big cats at all (the author is Matthew Reilly and none of the words have an "m" and an "r"! Unless I'm missing it, which is possible!), however you never know, there may be a rescue in the book...or kittens...or something! Or I have a book here by Tricia Stringer which would certainly fit in either level. Decisions, decisions!!

message 78: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 563 comments OK - so I think the consensus is to move onto "big cats", but there are still two more books in the "insect level" - "millions of bugs" and "many species" before we can progress onto the "big cat" level. I might get a chapter or two read, if I can decide which book I'm going to read next(!), but I'm essentially off to bed, team!

Have a happy Sunday of reading!

message 79: by Carmen (new)

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 260 comments Sleep well 💜

message 80: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Good night Kathryn! I'd say start the book you feel like the most: In my experience these levels move on quickly.

Kathryn | 563 comments Johanne wrote: "Good night Kathryn! I'd say start the book you feel like the most: In my experience these levels move on quickly."

This is true... But I'm hoping to finish both by the end of February, so it probably doesn't matter anyway. And obviously I'm still mucking around on Goodreads, so not reading or deciding which one to read!! Now I'm definitely going!!

message 82: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Sleep well, Kathryn!

Trish, I saw from the spreadsheet that you'd finished The Count of Monte Cristo. Please tell me you loved it!? ;)

message 83: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments Good night, Kathryn!

I’m happy to read for big cats next. I read multiple books at the same time, so I can always pick up and put down books as needed.

Looking even further ahead to the level we do after big cats and the books I’ve currently got out from the library, I have a lot more options for dinosaur level than puppy.

message 84: by Viktoria (last edited Feb 23, 2020 05:22AM) (new)

Viktoria Valkova | 102 comments Hi everyone!
I'm almost done with my first audiobook for the RAT - it doesn't fit for what's left in insects, so I transferred it to big cats.
My next audiobook also fits a few prompts there, so I added it as well.
I don't know why I've chosen to read books with long titles or by author with middle names - it's really hard to fit them for title/author initials hahaha

Edit: I just remembered middle names don't have to be included for the initials option.

message 85: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments Hi, it’s about 9 pm here in China and my kids are finally asleep, so I think I’ll be able to finish my book tonight (can count for Millions of bugs- Author name is Lauren Graham). Will update when I finish.

message 86: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments @Viktoria, Carmen asked about authors with more than two names and was told it just had to be first and last initial.

@Erica, happy reading!

message 87: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments I finished Someday, Someday, Maybe.
Going to read One of Us is Next (for cats could work for rescue or roar...)

Have also read 211 pages total so far.

message 88: by Erica (new)

Erica | 555 comments Oh, and I’m not near Wuhan thankfully. I live in Hainan, an island in south China. It’s a big tourist destination for Chinese people so we have had quite a few cases of corona virus, but things have slowed down and we are going days between new cases now. Malls and parks reopened yesterday and we left our apartment for the first time in almost a month, but just to find a place with no people where we could take our kids to run and ride bikes.

message 89: by Ira (new)

Ira | 358 comments Hey team. Yesterday was a slow day for me because I had to help my mother with some technical stuff. I did manage to read 40 pages and listen to 1 hour of audiobook. Today I am doing much better. I have the afternoon free to read as much as I want to.

I did. Great start. The middle was a bit slow as it was setup for the sting, but the payoff in the last third was very satisfying.

I'm good with Big Cats - there's a lot of prompts I can fit my current book to: Stone Cold Crazy, Shannon Hill.

I'm having more trouble with the next ones I want to read, so I may have to think hard, or just fill them out when I'm reading them:
Urn Burial, Kerry Greenwood
The Library of Lost and Found, Phaedra Patrick
Among the Departed, Vicki Delany

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Off to Big cats!

I just finished I, Robot, that fit the author initials for the last one we needed for insects (Isaac Asimov - many species).

Yay! Well done, Johanne! I’ll read my last chapters in the 2 books I’ve saved, and then update them on the Bigs Cats tab.

message 93: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Off to a great start in the next level then!

message 94: by Carmen (new)

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 260 comments I'll try to finish Treasure Island before bed still (running in the morning so sadly have to go to bed at a reasonable hour, so not 3-4am like last night. booo) but otherwise that'll definitely be done tomorrow. It can count for 6 prompts, with 4 not taken yet.

Also started House of Hades, which can count for 5, all untaken as of yet.

We're doing great!

message 95: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments I’ve just finished my two books and updated the spreadsheet with them. I’ll have a look at the other books I’m currently reading to see where they will fit, to help me to choose which book to focus on next.

Woho, well done!

As suspected, I didn't get in much reading today, but managed some audio on my bike tour home just now. Will update the spreadsheet.

message 100: by Carmen (new)

Carmen (TheReadingTrashQueen) (thereadingtrashqueen) | 260 comments I ended up sleeping after brunch so I didn't read as much as I wanted to today, but I can log at least 4 hours of audio in a bit, so that's something, it'll take us to 40 hours and get us the final audio Wildcard!

I'll read a bit of Treasure Island in bed probably, and will make sure to update those too!
