Denise Lauron (dlauron) | 271 comments I have been following but I've been really sick and I haven't looked through my books yet. I didn't want you all to think I've been ignoring the thread.

Allison Ann | 1245 comments Sorry you've been sick Denise, hope you are doing better now. Spent yesterday weighing fish for our local trout derby and crashed like a crash test dummy when I finally got home. :D Still several days to go until we start, what is everyone reading while we wait? I have been hunting for books to work for 5 Green, but when I do actually read, I started Good Girl, Bad Girl (Cyrus Haven, #1) by Michael Robotham . My first Robotham and I call him Robot Ham in my mind and giggle while reading about horrible child abuse and murder. Sometimes I worry about myself. Anyone else reading an awesome book? Or doing something fun?

Alissa | 351 comments I don't have anything from the library that works for colour cards yet, but lots that work in general.

No worries Alissa - all books work for something, especially lots of Reverse, lots of V and lots of vowels. :D

Nicole | 241 comments Just finished All the Ugly and Wonderful things which was amazing but has given me a major book hangover. Starting The Bookish Life of Nina Hill as a light palate cleanser. I am very much a mood reader!

Erica A | 27 comments Hi... my name is Erica and I live in South Florida. This is my first time playing Uno. Challenge seems to be the appropriate word...
I know that I will have a lot of questions..

While I enjoy reading most genres.. I don't care much for science fiction, zombie stories or historical romance...

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill sounds terribly funny and cute, I'm going to have to find that. Your other book isn't my thing at all, but I'm glad you loved it. :D

Welcome Erica. It's really a simple challenge once you get into it. Basically you read books and keep track of what cards they might work for - Title, Author, Characters, Series # and Location. Then the captains use that info to fill in all our cards. We also need to keep an eye out for Reverse cards, which is anything someone else on the team has read. And Colour Cards - if you have a book with a Blue, Green or Red (and probably Yellow next month) cover, then we can count it for whatever info it works for too. About mid-month there is usually a mini-challenge too. No clue what they will be this year, but they are always fun. And if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'm sure everyone here would be happy to help you out.

Rayne (raynebair) | 201 comments Hi all. While I wait to start I started reading The Shack and I’m listening to Circe. Two very different genres. Like I said, if it looks interesting, I’ll give it a go if I’m in the mood.

Yep. I too am a mood reader. I could, in the past, plan out a lot of books ahead of time, but lately that just hasn’t really worked out. That’s why I don’t want to commit to too many specific books right now.

message 60: by Denise (new)

Denise Lauron (dlauron) | 271 comments I am supposed to be reading Circe for bookclub. I'll wait to start it until we start, though.

message 61: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 1245 comments I plan all my books. It's fun. Then I don't actually follow the plan and end up reading what I feel like. That's even more fun! :D

message 62: by Rayne (new)

Rayne (raynebair) | 201 comments Well. Yeah. I try to plan. i have a huge spreadsheet where I plan my books for another quarterly challenge. But then I look at the list a month later and realize that I’m never gonna read some of them. Which sucks because I love marking them off on the spreadsheet. Lol!

Rachel (stillchasethewind) | 452 comments Nicole wrote: "Rachel wrote: "Has anyone read Truly Devious? I am not familiar with characters etc but am about to get it from the library queue. Would it work with any of the color cards we have?..."

Thanks for the info. Should I try to save it for next month's color cards?

message 64: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (stillchasethewind) | 452 comments I am currently trying to finish off Crazy Rich Asians (which I am enjoying way more than I expected to) and Hidden Figures which is boring me to death. I think I expected it to me more about science and mathematics advancements than it is.

message 65: by Paula (new)

Paula Reyes Wagner (paurw) | 784 comments Oh, I have Crazy Rich Asians on my shelf, I hadn't seen the movie yet, but I think I'll like the book.
So sad to hear about Hidden Figures, I want to read it or see the movie eventually.

I like to mix genres when I read (as I read multiple books at the same time), then when one of the books it's getting hard to read, I can switch for a lighter book if needed.

I try to plan too, sometimes I read what I plan, other times I do something else, but I like to keep track of things too, I do it on a spreadsheet and on my planner, I do an statistics page and all hahaha.

It works for this month if you want to read it. But if you want to save it for next month, that's fine too. Just let me know when you decide.

I read both of those books and surprisingly I think I saw both movies too (I don't watch many movies, especially when I've read the book). But I remember thinking each book would make a better movie than it did book. I definitely enjoyed Hidden Figures more as a movie. And there's a possibility that I think I saw Crazy Rich Asians just because I saw the commercials so often. :D But it definitely seemed like something that would work visually.

message 68: by Erica (new)

Erica A | 27 comments I have read all 3 (Crazy Rich...)..,loved every one....I’m afraid to watch the movie because I don’t think they will be able to capture all of the designs as I imagined them 😃

Are the second two long? Maybe I can read them for the challenge.

message 71: by Erica (new)

Erica A | 27 comments About the same length as the 1st one....

message 72: by Rayne (new)

Rayne (raynebair) | 201 comments I read all three of the Crazy Rich Asian books and loved them all. I saw the movie after reading book 1 and while I enjoyed it, I felt the the movie didn’t quite capture the outrageousness. But that’s just me. My mind pictured something far more than what I saw in the movie.

I also listened to the audio of Hidden Figures and absolutely loved it. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Haven’t seen the movie yet.

Rachel (stillchasethewind) | 452 comments I will be reading One of Us Is Next (One of Us Is Lying, #2) by Karen M. McManus first as the library just gave it to me, there are a zillion people behind me and I only have 7 days to read it. AHHH! Maybe this can count for a red card?

Your library only gives you 7 days for a book? I appreciate my library all the time, but even more now. :D As Paula said, if you start it after the deadline, we can count it for 1 Red.

message 79: by Paula (last edited Jan 29, 2020 06:47AM) (new)

Paula Reyes Wagner (paurw) | 784 comments Maybe it's 7 days because it is in high demand¿?

Chile's digital public library lends each book for 21 days, it has improved a lot in the recent years, and they're expanding their catalogue too.
The physical public library lends the books for 10 days during the school year and 15 days in the summer (that's now =D)

message 80: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (stillchasethewind) | 452 comments Paula, I will wait til Saturday to start it. It isn't very long and I like the author, so hopefully I will finish before they reclaim it.

Allison, some books are 7 days for popular new releases. :(

message 82: by Paula (last edited Jan 29, 2020 07:47AM) (new)

Paula Reyes Wagner (paurw) | 784 comments yes! we can use it for the other Wild draw 4, the cover needs to be 50%+ red

Allison Ann | 1245 comments Erica wrote: "Can I add The Other Woman - Sandie Jones for 1 Red?"

I can't find a cover for that book that is more than 50% red Erica. They are mainly blue and white, this is the most red I could find - The Other Woman by Sandie Jones . Can you link to the copy you have? Thanks.

message 84: by Erica (new)

Erica A | 27 comments sooo... i have a question... under 1 Red.... it has to hit every point under the "One'" ?

Erica A | 27 comments How about I'm Stiill here - for 5 Green?

message 86: by Paula (new)

Paula Reyes Wagner (paurw) | 784 comments Erica wrote: "sooo... i have a question... under 1 Red.... it has to hit every point under the "One'" ?"

It needs to hit at least one of the points under 1 (character, series #, Title, Author or Setting) and the cover must be 50%+ red

About I'm Still Here, who is the author? I'm not sure wich book your talking about, can you link the edition you may read?

message 87: by Erica (new)

Erica A | 27 comments the author is Austin Channing Brown...

message 94: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 1245 comments Just a little over 12 hours before we can begin reading. Yay! :D

Getting closer....

Anyone decided their first book yet? I'm thinking I will start with my 8 Green book - When the Walls Fell (Out of Time, #2) by Monique Martin

message 95: by Rayne (new)

Rayne (raynebair) | 201 comments I finished my current books today so I’m ready to start my first UNO book tomorrow. I’m going with the Our Bloody Pearl. After that, I guess it’s just whatever works.

I do have one that would work for 8 blue if we need it. Just let me know.

Denise Lauron (dlauron) | 271 comments Insomnia kicked in. Can't start a book for two more hours. Maybe I'll attempt sleep until then. Yea, right.

I'll start To All the Boys I've Loved Before once it's February 1, officially.
